Ivory Tower Squabble EST 2011. WINDMILL SURVIVOR
HAH!
You know how it is, Gabe!
As I've posted here many times before about my 4+ years as a local Disney Store CM...peanut pay, always expected 5-star Guest treatment. The peanut pay is why I had to work as many as 2 other retail jobs at the same time!
And, for anyone who thinks the expectations from us weren't as high as any Disney CM anywhere, think again!
Visiting our Store was as close as many of our guests were ever going to get to a Disney Park/Resort. Little kids used to run into the Store exclaiming "It's Disney World!!!".
Even when I was a Lead Manager at the Disney Store I was making more than a dollar more an hour at the men's clothing store as just a basic salesman with much less responsibility.
And I've also told before about our SM at TDS wanting to know if I would be interested in moving up to the ASM position, with much more responsibility than an LM, only to be making a few cents more an hour than I was at the clothing store. If I wasn't good friends with her, I might have laughed in her face...!
For all those 4+ years though, I was ALWAYS as Magical as could be onstage...I would always think of Walt...!!! Although, from time to time, we all had our moments backstage... :cautious:  ;)
Regardless, I/we still had some awesome times there, and made A LOT of Magic for sooo many Guests...times I will never forget...!
But, as I've also posted many times before, if nothin' else, it was one heckuva' learning experience...!!! :)
I'm kind of hoping my son will grow out of the SW fandom so I won't have to be involved in the madness when it opens, but DH enjoys it, too, so probably not going to happen. Although, the fact that Hubby enjoys it might mean that I can do something else with DD while the boys hit SWL. That's what we did last Summer, just on a very small scale...they did Star Tours? while we went and met Olaf. We did Muppets while they went and Chewie and Kylo Ren? So it all worked out. But it sounds like SWL is going to be a huge part of HS, so I don't know how much other stuff there will be to do for DD and I. We shall see.

Well I can tell you what DD and I have always done when the boys had other things in mind or vs versa, we'd hop to a different park right out of the studios and meet up with the boys a couple hours later. It worked out just great-especially with a boy and a girl along with the 5 year age difference.

Since I mentioned that while at D23 Expo I met Bob Gurr and Tom Nabbe and @donaldtoo asked for pictures and I finally have them loaded in my computer here those ones are. The rest you'll have to wait for in my trip report, which I'll start when I get done with my June one...

I was gonna say, wow, pictures with two legends. But then I backtracked to the REAL highlight of the photos--that t-shirt you're wearing-- I WANT ONE!!! :p

I hear about apartment buildings going up in flames all the time while still under construction. Depending on the number of floors, spans, etc., it isn't nearly always necessary to use steel in apartment construction.
I wonder if the sprinkler system had been tested out and was operational at the time of the fire.
There are some upper end neighborhoods around here that even require all residential construction to be equipped with fire sprinklers now.
And, you've seen some of the crazy-big stuff we do, so there is a lot of steel being used in those puppies.

I don't know about testing the water sprinkler system. The way the story was reported on the local TV news, neither the sprinkler system nor the smoke alarm systems had been installed (yet)? From the report, that didn't sound unusual during the construction phase, as (I guess) these systems go in later on--but I don't know at what point in the construction process it happens.

Here's a link to a more in-depth news story about wooden frame construction, and issues. (Skip the brief video--it's just a static picture of the fire.) But the full article (2 pages) goes deep into what sounds like an ongoing problem.

I was always afraid of these, I don't like falling and to do this you have to fling yourself at the ground. No thanks!

Try and remember that kids are built closer to the ground then adults and that they are blessed with more forgiving body parts then adults. To kids it is not much different then just leaning slightly forward.

But then you'd miss the fun of getting banged up by the rocks underneath while you slide down the stupid thing! :hilarious:

When we were kids my aunt made us a slip n slide at her house out of some garbage bags and tent stakes. Worst. Idea. Ever. Half the time we'd be sliding down one bag and somehow end up underneath the next bag instead of on top of it :hilarious::hilarious: And it took a good twenty minutes before she had the bright idea to cover the tent stakes with tennis balls. By then everyone was bloody and battered. Somehow, it was still a blast. I'd never go down it now, as an adult!

Thanks! It was one of the few pieces of clothing I've bought in the last year that I didn't think twice about buying. I saw the design and immediately ordered it. I got it from tee-public.com it has washed up well and I enjoy being super nerd wearing it. That webiste often has $14 deals on their shirts too.
