They should know by now how much of a following the show has and how much it's loved by us. Do you think the replacement will have that knowledge kept on the front burner?

Serious as in the replacement is already being constructed or just conceptualized at this time? I just fear something like a false start a la RoL where they plan RoE's last day as 10/01/2017 but find the replacement won't be ready on time so Epcot will be without any night time spectacular till March 2018 or so.

As serious as this clock is, the number one thing we need to be looking for right now is RoL. The success of that show will dictate the direction of the majority of WDW new nighttime entertainment, especially that of EPCOT.
RoL could easily be the difference between Tapestry of Nations: A Nighttime Spectacular, and a Frozen Fiesta of the Galaxy.

I would HATE to see the torches go. Not only are they amazing for ambience, they are equipped with the imbedded speakers. Also the inferno barge, another amazing piece of show equipment. It would be ideal if they could keep them somehow in the new show.

An upgraded or updated show would make a lot of sense. Every show has its life cycle and I imagine this one is coming to an end. That being said, I love particular elements and would hope they'd keep them (torches, lights, style) with a new show.
I imagine a radical departure from the Millenium theme.
Ask the Tower fans at DCA.
It's TDO - They clearly don't care what anyone thinks except the bean counters.
Unless Epcot is reinventing the wheel, I don't think that will happen. Of course I never thought I'd see MK without a night parade and look where we are.... Back to my point, AK has never done Nighttime Entertainment before this year and it looks like they going all out which unfortunately delayed ROL for who knows how long. Yes, we're pretty close but no date yet.

I'm wrong but hasn't Epcot been using some of the same equipment since 1982? I don't remember when the fountains came, Martin would know. The first globe came in 1988 with IlluminNations and stayed until the Earth Globe in 1999 with ROE. I remember reading on here (which has the best ROE history BTW!) it was rumored for IlluminNations to be down all summer of 1999 but it turned out that the change over was just 1 overnight and Epcot never went a night without IlluminNations unless it closed early for the millennium press event?

Is that the same thing as the whole 'world united in harmony, look at the history of man and this planet, we'll keep the dream alive into the future' sorta thing? Is the globe endangered?
If Magic Feather is right about it's theme being dependent on RoL's performance I'm optimistic. So long as the water screens work well and are clearly visible I think that's going to be a hit.
Pretty sure it's a mix of 84 and 88 for the oldest. But I may be wrong, I'm stood next to Echo Lake typing this and am going of my (scatty) memory.
The fountain barges are at least '88.
As an aside nothing says Hollywood more than Wrath of Kahn BGM mixed with Duel of the Fates...

Waterscreens that satisfy a 360 degree audience though without looking distorted? Man, call me a pessimist, I don't have any high hopes for this.

I disagree with the premise that the show was only designed for the Millennium Celebration. It has proven popular over 17 years. to me once RoE goes, what's left of what Epcot was goes with it along with my faith in humanity.

Couldn't agree more. How many nightime spectacular awards did it win over the (years)?! It is a TIMELESS show and to change it completely is a horrible idea. They were able to keep the same musical theming in Soarin Around the World, why can't they keep elements of this, the most prized entertainment offering they've ever had?!

For some of us, Martin, this rather nonchalant post of yours (seriously, it 's almost cruel to just drop something like this willy nilly!) is like a Doomsday clock countdown to Armageddon. Will RoE still be around in March 2018 (he asks selfishly)?
Now I admit that IllumiNations is long overdue for a proper refresh, but my goodness it's going to be hard to say goodbye to the current show. I don't know how anything in the pipeline could come close to matching the symbolism, meaning, and story of Reflections of Earth.
I can hear the new opening monologue now...
