As of April 1 - UK Visitors need biometric or ePassport for US Entry

Pumbas Nakasak

Heading for the great escape.
I am aware. Thankfully your nice TSA took my parents money and then told them a few days later the passports would no longer be accepted, it really only affects a few people whos passports are within a few months of expiring as after that most would be chipped anyway at issue. But it was a bit of a shock for my mother who panics about such things.

Government agencies in the US seem to be patterned after Terry Gilliams movie Brazil these days.

Had a panic today reading this, apparently all 2006+ passports have this anyway?

if you have the rectangular symbol on the front of the passport you are safe

The biometric ones started in October 2006, so there's still a chance you could have an old one. And the easiest way to know is the little camera symbol on the front of the passport. :)

It covers some passports issued up to End October 2006, usually one which had remaining months from previous passports added (ie those that were valid for 10 years 1 month to 10 years 9 months) as after October 2006 all UK issued passports are valid for the new rules.
So it is a very small number and it has been known about in the UK for sometime so no-one should really fall foul over it.

The bit about visiting Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan or Syria and now need a full visa... well that's another matter...

Hardly.

There's over a few million still in use.

Although about 5.3 million UK passports in total where issued in 2006, (a figure based on the fact that 32,123,580 passports issued between 2007 and 2012) (Say, 2 million expired, another million issued after the change so not effected) the vast majority would not be used for travel to the US anyway... Also most people knew about the requirements when booking so would have replaced theirs if required, so I standby my comment the number effected is not that large. If you don't check passport requirements before travelling its you own fault anyway, however harsh that sounds..

Probably got wrong info like on the Wright Stuff saying you need 6 months left on a passport to visit the US.
Not saying the actual figure of passports not complying isn't large, just it won't affect that many.

But it will RUIN your holiday real fast if you don't know and let's face it most passport holders are not business travellers who actually keep track of current passport regulations.
