Some more pictures of Windsor, Kensington Palace & Hyde Park

I like how they made the moat of Windsor Castle into garden area. (not for visitors to roam around in though)

We watched the changing of the guards here at Windsor instead of Buckingham Palace because we heard it was just as good, not as crowded, and we would be closer to the actual guards. It was nice to see but a lot of standing by the guards.

We were there on July 1st, Princess Diana's birthday. Some people had left tributes to her on the gates.

There was actually a commercial for these before the Minions movie. There was also a commercial for Aulani.

OMG . . . spectacular castles and impressive grounds!! :inlove: I'd like to pretend I'm a princess, and walk around these magnificent buildings and expansive grounds.

Loved the pictures of the guards, too; their uniforms are awesome. (Nice hats! ;) )

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
Except for the "Zed" thing. The letter "Z" is pronounceable and doesn't even sound like any other letter in the alphabet. What is that all about? Do they have a Zed-oo in that park? I also have been puzzled by the phrase... "he/she is going to University" instead of "the University". It must be a specific University, not just whatever one they are near in the morning.
In order to conserve keystrokes, we leave out the article. And presto, we can now arbitrarily distribute 3 extra u's however we see fit.

Just wondering though - do you say, "he is going to school today" or "he is going to the school today"?

I think I've often heard British people say similar things like, "He/She is going to University." They don't include "the" before University. So maybe it's the fault of the British people who emigrated to Canada many years ago, and brought their fractured English with them..

As for the Zed thing, I haven't a clue. Perhaps @JenniferS can explain that one! ;)
While the attached says that neither is right, if you continue to read ... clearly WE are. :joyfull:

  1. Zee is the American way of saying the letter z. Zed is the British way. Neither is right or wrong, and nobody is ignorant for pronouncing z the way they do. The zed pronunciation is older, and it more closely resembles the Greek letter, zeta, from which the English letter is derived.

I'm taking a break from a crafty project (if it turns out I will share a picture of it) so I thought I'd update with a few more London pictures.

I'll start with some food....The first picture is of my ale and pie sampler. The first pie (on the left) was something I thought would be my least favorite and it rivaled my favorite: 1. sweet potato spinach and goat cheese, the middle or #2 was a steak pie, and #3 (my favorite) was ham hock and chicken in a creamy tarragon sauce. The ales were matched with the pies. This was at the Red Lion, if you are in London near Westminster Abbey check it out, very good!

Hubby got the full size version of the steak pie. He got a nice little salad with his, apparently the ales were my "veggie"!

Then another day we went to the Blackfriars Pub (again excellent). And I had another tasty ale, and hubby and I both had sausages and mash (also known as bangers and mash).

We took the tourist excursion to Harrods, we walked there. We treated it like Wall-Drug in South Dakota, both are so big that we gave ourselves a limited amount of time there. At Harrod's I did buy some chocolates, and a hazelnut hot cocoa mix just for the box. But the hot cocoa will be nice when winter rolls around.

After shopping that day we were really tired so we took the tube back to our neighborhood and found a pub. The pub had 2 for 1 burgers on special so that is what we went with. The burgers were good.

The next day we headed to Windsor castle.
But these are a picture of the Underground stairs at our station, I thought it was cool that the steps were themed to look like the Underground trains, I didn't see all the steps at stations like this.

Windsor Castle (we were there first thing in the morning). Again we were only allowed to take pictures outside, no pictures allowed in the State rooms or in the beautiful St. Georges cathedral. I think it is ploy to sell postcards, but they state it is for security and integrity of the palaces and places of worship. So another point in favor of France, they let you take pictures anywhere!

I had to chuckle, thinking about summer reading lists. As kids, all we wanted to do was play all summer. I recall my sister, brothers and myself would get all the books we were supposed to read over the summer, just 4 days before school was to start up again; and we'd have these cram reading sessions! It was painful! :in pain:

And, back when I was in the lower grades (2 through 4), we had to read about 6 books over the summer, but we were allowed to choose whatever books we wanted from the library. So, I'd follow the same pattern of going to the library about 4 days before school started, and I'd pick out the skinniest books I could find!! :D :joyfull: As you can tell, my life wasn't exactly destined for induction into Mensa . . . ;)

What's a "summer reading list"...? o_O

you should try the Sanaa.
Their indian fusion food is really good.

just watch when you go.. because back in feb.. it was always FULL TO THE SEAMS!

We did have dinner tonight at Sanaa, which I enjoyed more than Boma. Yummy bread service and I got the butter chicken & spicy Durban shrimp, which was also yummy. Definitely liked the shrimp better, though. Chicken a little chewy.

We had planned to do Jiko on Saturday night, but I think we've had enough "ethnic" food now (although we are still doing Tusker for breakfast on Sat) and will try a different signature restaurant instead. Just need to figure out which one!

So you're saying that the English for some reason felt compelled by one letter of the alphabet to show homage to the Greeks? Cool! But it seems it should have carried through to other like sounding letters like Bed, Ced, Ded, Eed, Ged, Ted and Ved?

Both actually! School is more of an activity then a place so if he is going to school he is going to the local place to learn something. The origin of the phrase... to be schooled. They are not turning him into a building, they are educating him. If I am going to go there because he's sitting in the principals office due to breaking windows in the building, then I would have to go to the school. In that case it is a person, place or thing that I am going to visit and not be a participant in. School in the first sense is really an activity or verb. Either way the use of it like that is only if it is common knowledge as to the location. In the case of University it could be one of thousands spread through-out the world. So being a noun, it would require "the" to proceed it. Besides that, and more importantly, it sounds weird to just say University.

Man, do I have to school you on everything? ;):)

@figmentfan423 , yes I very much enjoyed the cooler weather last night. It's very pleasant out this morning--all the humidity is gone!!

The temperature right now at 5:09 AM is a GLORIOUS 61 degrees! :joyfull: :joyfull: :joyfull: :joyfull:

Starting tomorrow, 5 days in the 90s with high humidity and dew points. We have had heavy rains most of the day and night. At least my plants will be well watered for the heat wave.

I don't ever remember getting summer reading lists from school, but I was such a nerd I spent most of my summer reading as many books as I could. I would keep a list of books I'd read and try to top that amount each summer. Actually, I still do that, read and keep lists! :geek:

Yea, I was bein' kinda' silly in my last post/reply regarding such, but, I really don't remember ever getting a summer reading list, either.
Although, I did read plenty all the time, back then.
Mostly WWII history books. :)
