A permit was filed with the South Florida Water Management District today to build an Orange County Sheriff's Office on WDW property. It will be located right behind Saratoga Springs...

I'm surprised it won't be located adjacent to the existing Fire station #4. The lot just south of the station is listed as commercial.

I am also surprised that the OCFD station in the vicinity does not have a direct access route to the property. That station was built almost 20 years before station 4 and could have been used to assist RCFD much more quckly if a private direct access road was built.

Pardon me, as I'm from MA where our Sherrifs do more clerical and transportation work such as serving papers and moving prisoners about...
In FL are they equated with what we call our State Police?

Reedy Creek does not have its own police department so the sherriffs department is the primary law enforcement agency in the area. The state troopers for the most part stick to the highways and major roads.

In Florida The State Troopers job is to enforce motor vehicle laws on highways and unincorporated roads. The Sherriff dept or local police department are the primary law enforcement agencies within a county.

In Florida there are several different layers of law enforcement. Municipalities have police departments, each county has a Sheriff's Department, and there is also the Florida Highway Patrol. They all serve basically the same law enforcement functions just in different physical and sometimes legal areas of jurisdiction.

Additionally, there are Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officers. Some universities have their own police departments as well.

Florida Highway Patrol usually only comes on Disney property if there is an vehical accident. Good to see OCSO getting a permanent base, now they can stop hanging out at the fire station. :)

There is a large presence, at the park entrances, traffic control, and backstage - so seems a sensible move.

There is a HUGE presence these days. You never would have ever seen an armed or simply uniformed Sheriff's deputy back in the 70s or 80s or most of the 90s.

That destroys the illusion and also makes people wonder if they're safe.

Of course, some of us tinfoil Mouseear wearers have a strong feeling that Disney has the Feds actively on property (because if you think the folks that do bag checks could detect a crazy dude or terrorist then you've likely had too much Pixie Dust!)

I recall being with George Kalogridis in November of 2001 walking from DD to the PPH and him telling me point blank that I was in the safest place in SoCal, almost on queue about half a dozen military copters flew overhead. I always see them (or hear them now) out there. The 'excuse' is the closeness of major military installations like Camp Pendleton. The thing is, those installations were there back in the 90s and I never heard or saw military aircraft flying over Anaheim.

But I'm sure that the new station is largely needed to write tickets for CMs and investigate bus accidents.

You'll notice there's always a plains-clothed security officer standing (most usually leaning on the railings) right before the bag-check at MK. They are usually wearing some sort of silly large-brimmed hat, oh and also an earpiece.

In most of the south, the PD's answer calls within their specified city limits. The rest of the county is handled by the sheriffs office. They answer calls, write tickets, serve papers, and whatever else. They FLHP handles wrecks and traffic. If there is a wreck in property, OCSO will get out with it, but the HP will actually work the wreck.

When I worked for an SO, we were told to stay off the interstate unless working a detail as that is what the state was for.

I won't even bother to get in to FDLE (what amounts to the investigative branch of the state police), Agricultural (which now fall under HP and have their powers), Game and Fish, motor carrier, or the Attorney Generals office as that would confuse you even more.

I guess that's fine but I think some areas of the property are speed traps with posted speeds to slow for major roads. I understand two lane roads having slower speeds and congested areas. I guess there is an inherit problem of those who know the roads like the back of their hands, and those who are completely clueless. So they air on the side of caution. I think the accidents are do to unfamiliarity of the area, then speed, but have no evidence other than my own experiences while driving on property.

Massachusetts is 100% incorporated land and has removed county government except for the jail/court system. In other states county government handles unincorporated land and Sheriffs have full police jurisdiction.
