on the disney parks blog there is a photo of sparks and such shooting off of it...was this a regular effect at some point in history?

The Tower of Terror sign DID spark every few minutes or so at night years ago but they have since turned that effect off as it was a fire hazard to the plants below.

Indeed. It still works if powered up, but control for the grinders is now localised up in the building. Basically you have to get access to the backstage area where the controls are and manually fire them.

The still image is indeed from the WDSP press opening night. What a night it was too. :)

The point of not moving the control is so it can't be used.

I understand is it used to run on a timer with local override switches. It is these switches that are still intact.

This would be really cool if they could do this at WDW during Halloween and maybe create a fright night event at DHS with the Disney villans.

I like the one time event they did for Phantom Manor..

Neat! I hadn't seen that one.
I think I prefer the building projections that make "sense" of the building's place and architecture, rather than just use the building as a giant screen to show stuff related to what's in the building.

The "Acid Attack" scare zone that Universal put on for Halloween Horror Nights a couple years ago is still my all-time favorite use of this technology.

Blink, blink. Breathe, breathe. Day in, day out.
This is the one effect I could understand being turned off.. Because the fire hazard safety actually makes sense.
