Ok...Here it is in a nutshell...I'am a dreamer.....I dream of going back to WDW, all going well in 2015. But here is my question today...What is the magic of magic kingdom.?..:inlove:...Now the reason I ask this is because last night myself and Mrs Hatter were watching our 2008 vacation DVD.. It was our first night and we were sitting at Casey's having dogs & fries, waiting for Wishes to start..We were trying to let it sink in that just over 12 hours ago, we were getting on a plane in Scotland, and here we are, at WDW Florida..But whilst I was filming, my DW noticed a couple sitting just to the right of us with two girls, at a guess I would say ages 8 or 9 maybe. But as the music started " Star light Star bright "..Both of the girls started sobbing quietly, then the mother, followed by dad...Now I'am one of the worlds worst when it comes to sad films, and this nearly had me crying also...But why?...I do have a tear in my eye, especially on our last night at MK whilst watching Wishes..Yet never at Illuminations at Epcot..It's not the fireworks..So what the heck is it...Even if Wishes were played at Epcot, I don't think it would make me cry..So it's not the song either...So what is the magic of magic kingdom..??..Why did it bring this family to tears.?..Is there any physiologists out there that can explain this..??.....

You can't explain it, man! You can only feel it!
Nice theory...But there's gotta be more...That feels like the end of a Stanley Kubrick film.??:jawdrop:...2001: Me and my buddy walking out the cinema on the first night showing.." Wow! What a movie! Yeh dude.! What the hell happened at the end.!..Don't know! But what a masterpiece.!:joyfull:...

I think it's the feeling of family. I'm almost 28 years old, my brother 25. I'm engaged and have been living with my fiance for 4 years now. My family and I still take a family vacation to Disney every single year (even though DF doesn't always join lol maybe once that Star Wars Land is finished haha). I have no childern, nor my brother but we really enjoy reconnecting and catching up as a family. Magic Kingdom, more so than any of the parks really drills home on the idea of family and it's our favorite place to get together and do that reconnecting. The music, the theming on Main Street, it brings all of us back to a time when we were little and life was less chaotic. For me, thats the magic of Mk.

Don't know what it is but everything from the entrance/exit music and just the whole vibe does it for me.

To me, MK is a romanticized vision of our own childhoods. The primary ingredients of our imaginations from when we were young are included in the lands. Adventure, exploration (Frontierland), Fantasy, and the unknown (Tomorrowland). When we were kids, we pretended to be cowboys or spacemen, princesses and presidents. The attractions and theming at MK brings you back to a time when you could truly love these things you imagined in your head and dreamed someday would be your adult life. So, for kids its a giant playground. For adults its recapturing a time before reality took away those dreams. All centered around a giant castle that you get to by walking through an idealized version of the home town main street.

Its everything you wanted to enjoy in life as a kid, brought to reality and put in front of you. Disney plays into this by endorsing those feelings with straight ahead enjoyment of that romanticism and naiveté without allowing for any cynicism. In other places, you would have winks and nods that this is not real, but Disney wants you to believe it is. The music and smells are designed to make the dreams reality, and if you can suspend your disbelief and cynicism while you are there it works. It won't work for all, but for those who can accept it for what it is, it will bring a tear to your eye.

That's just my take on it. Although, I do also get choked up at Epcot, but that may be more personal than by design.

i could easily say that its the one constant in an ever changing world that allows me to reconnect to myself in my own manner. but i agree, there is more to it. i could go the nostalgic way, but that doesnt always fly, the last time i went we took along our best friends (29 just like us btw) and it was their first time, nonetheless, the magic engulfed them as if they have gone every year in their life. i think the reality of it is there are only so many places we can go and be whoever we want to be, in a place that caters to that. the magic is within all of us, the parks were just built in a fashion that allows for the easiest way to let that magic out. :)

To some it's the whole thing of growing up with Disney and Disney characters. To others it's the idealized concept of small town America when things were perhaps "slower, simpler and friendlier".

Tears however can be from some other reasons. The realization of what this is all gonna cost. The sight of all those "bare bottomed Brazilians" and the realization that you'll never move there. Finding out that your favorite ride is down until who knows when. Still not being able to get a beer in the MK.

OK, here I go...

  1. The ambiance. Music everywhere, happy people, colorful and pretty things, from balloons to signs.
  2. The whimsy. This is by far the most whimsical of the parks, and it provides a child-like fun in all that you do. Being an adult is necessary, but being a kid is a privilege.
  3. The lands. I like the variety of moving from one theme to another within walking distance. It helps to make the day seem more like a trip to several places.
  4. The details. Things such as the upcoming Main Street escape route help to remind me of the things that are done in this park to keep it as a constant retreat. For one day no Congress, Senate, White House, or mass murders. Just a day will do the trick, but it's a day nonetheless.
There's probably more, but at least I didn't say, "It's just a mental process, man...mellow out and soak it in"
