How Much Walking Per Day

I was wondering or more like justifying what I eat on vacation, about how many miles/kms do you think you walk during a day in any one of the parks. I imagine doing a lap around Epcot has got to be a pretty big distance.

I can answer this with recent experience, but I'm not sure how helpful this will be. My girlfriend used a pedometer app on her iPhone because she wanted to see how much exercise you can get from a typical visit to the park. However, because we are AP and live very close, our typical "visits" are only about 4-5 hours.

With that said, at Epcot a couple weeks ago we put up 3.7 miles for about a 5 hour visit. This includes walking from the parking lot instead of taking the tram (in lot Amaze, so not far). We made sure to turn off the app during all rides. Test Track would've really screwed with the numbers lol.

I do not think it is likely that you're doing anywhere near 15 miles unless you're simply trying to do it or you power walk most of the day. When we did our short visit, we rarely stopped to sit down. So if you're there for a full 10 hours, at a normal leisurely pace and you stop to eat lunch or dinner and stop in shops and stuff my guess is you're probably walking about 7, maybe 8 miles tops. Hope this helps...

DH and I have fitbits and while we were at Disney World over Christmas we were taking 30,000+ steps per day. Assuming 10,000 steps is about 5 miles, that's around 15 miles in a day. I know the WS loop is a mile.

Wow! I must have a really tiny step compared to you. The company I used to work for did a big walking for fitness campaign when I worked there. Some "fitness" company came in, gave us all pedometers, and met with each participating employee to measure our average step size and tell us how many steps per mile we were doing. Mine was 10,000 steps = 1.25 miles. Most of my co-workers were in that range as well.

To answer the OP's question, I've mapped out our days on a website (can't remember what it was -- did this several months ago) and we walk about 4-5 miles on the EP & MK days and a little less on the DAK & DHS days. Add another mile for walking around the resort (going to refill mugs, walking to the bus stop, etc.). The long distance in MK is mostly due to us criss-crossing the park more than we do at other parks.

I think that would mean my steps are smaller than yours ;) I really don't know though. I just did a google search for how many miles 10,000 steps equaled. I just know we were taking upwards of 30,000 per day!

That's an 8-inch stride. Pretty far below the average, which is closer to 2.5 feet.

:arghh: I'm apparently having mommy brain...or old age brain....or a combination of both tonight. I went and pulled out the paperwork from that little "adventure" and it was actually 2,000 steps = 1.25 miles for me.

I think the average person walk 10-15 miles per day!!

I think you're underestimating the amount of time we all spend waiting in long lines, sitting on rides, standing and watching shows and parades, watching fireworkrs, sitting down in the restaurants, browsing at merchandise, etc. I don't think the average person is doing anywhere near that amount, unless they're there from open to close and all they're doing is walking.

There's 316800 inches in 5 miles. An 8 inch step would equal 39600 steps in 5 miles. 10000 steps in 5 miles would equal 2.64 feet per stride which is about average.

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
Like others have said you probably will walk 10-15 miles on average per day in the parks!! We eat anything we want and more than we would at home by far and never put on a pound! We are always on the dining plan so we are eating desert with every meal and eating at table service restaurants at least one a day if not twice when we do a breakfast. Also snacks durning the day too. Lol We never eat like that at home for 10+ days straight at that! lol DH has even lost a few pounds by the time we get home! Not fair! Lol :)

What's a DH? I saw some other thread where someone was talking about taking his wife and kids to the park and started referring to his DD and DW and I was thoroughly confused as to who he was talking about.

I read some article about a year ago on one of the Disney sites that stated the average person walks 8-10 miles per day when they visit Disney World. I can see that as high probability as evidenced by the fact that after one day even in the best of shoes...my feet let me know it. :D I do march on though as my trips are a week long when I visit the World and after years of foot research, even with my feet being a bit sore, at least I have no more blisters and "war wounds" and can keep on going. :)

If you are using a Nike+ app you have to turn it off on rides or it will count that into your walking and sometimes pedometers will add steps with the bumps on rides. That happened to my dad.

I think I tried to figure this out once by doing some mileage on a map and I think I figured about 8-10 miles with a little less being at Hollywood Studios.

I forgot to bring my Garmin edge 500 bike computer last year to see distance walked and to see the trail it would make from walking around and from being on the rides. Would be fun to see what the trail space mountain would leave.

No I don't believe I am over estimating. Browsing for merchandise is a constant back and forth. I don't wait in lines too long usually always go at slow times. Like I said about shopping back and forth a person is always back tracking going here to there and here and there again and again. Not to mention all the quick walking trips to bathrooms, up and down to get condiments for kids, bus stops, pool time walking back and forth to the rooms the list could go on and on!!! WDW is a ton of walking!!!
