Living at Epcot - A June Beach Club TR

Finally getting around to starting the trip report - only a month after returning from the World...Thankfully, we took plenty of pictures, which are helping me remember our experiences, but will likely make this one long report!

This was our family's 5th visit to WDW since our first in 2007 (with one less kid), and definitely the best one yet! My wife and I were celebrating our 15th anniversary, so we had to do it up right - we'd always wanted to stay near our favorite park, so we decided to spend our week at the Beach Club. It was like living at Epcot!

There were a few firsts for us on this trip, aside from the choice of resort. The most readily apparent was the new touch-to-pay and touch-to-enter system. We tend to use our room charge account for the vast majority of purchases and meals, and the new system worked flawlessly throughout our trip. The RFID park entry also worked well for us throughout the trip, though I can't say the same for other guests...It honestly didn't seem to be any faster than the old system, but that's a topic for another post. Other first time experiences included Star Wars Weekends and lots of new dining - but we'll get to those later.

This was also our first time visiting the parks anywhere close to "peak" season. All of our previous trips have been in Oct/Nov, with the lone exception of last year's trip in late August, so we were a bit nervous about what to expect from the crowds. I'm happy to report that the crowds were very manageable for most of the week, with a fairly noticeable increase during the last weekend. We didn't see a single tour group until the last day! We also had quite a bit of weather to deal with, including a tropical storm, but nothing we couldn't handle. We got wet, but it certainly didn't dampen the fun!

We spent 7 nights in a studio in Beach Club Villas, with 6-day park hoppers (started out with 5-day, and decided to add one mid-trip, which created a lovely little fiasco that I describe in another thread, thanks to the recent ticket price increase). First, the cast and crew: Myself, DW, and the 2 girls (14 and 3). Here we stand after shamelessly gorging on pot stickers and wings at Ohana the first night of our trip:

Now, to the details: We awoke bright and early Sunday, June 2nd, and tore down I-75 for around 6 hours before arriving at the Beach Club at about 2pm. We were met at the curb by a lovely CM with an Ipad who guided us to the front desk, where we were told our room wasn't quite ready yet. Having no plans to hit the parks on our travel day, we decided on a quick tour of the resort - absolutely beautiful! Yeah, that's me in the jeans and 3-year-old. Not a good choice of attire for the admittedly short, but rather warm, walk over to the International Gateway.

We'd never been to any of the Epcot resorts, or the International Gateway, before, so we decided to see just how close we would be to the World Showcase. We walked out of the lobby, hung a left, and in about 5 minutes were standing at the IG!

A short while later, we received the text saying our room was ready, so we headed over to the villas. We were placed in a handicap accessible studio room on the 3rd floor (this is the second time we've been put in a handicap room at WDW, in spite of having no handicaps...), which was pretty much a typical Disney hotel room - small and basic. We were stretching it with the four of us in such a small room, but we knew what to expect, and after some very creative clothing storage, we'd pretty much settled in. We had a queen bed and pullout sofa, and a pretty nice view of the woods between us and World Showcase. We were able to see the higher Illuminations fireworks from the balcony each night, and if we'd had a decent camera I would've taken some photos...This is what the place looked like most of the week:

Here's one of the many poignant scenes (arranged by our Mousekeeper during our absence) that greeted us upon our return to the room. You'll notice Pascal savaging my lei from Ohana while the other animals look on, unconcerned. Only Sulley appears to show some regret for standing idly by in the face of such irresponsible behavior.

After settling into the room, it was time for...bubbles on the balcony:

We decided against Downtown Disney, and just hung out at the resort until around 5pm when we headed over to Ohana for dinner. Each person in our party got to choose at least one meal during the trip, and this one was our DD14's choice. We'd eaten here during our very first visit to WDW, and she had been dreaming of those wings ever since. Dinner did not disappoint!

disney2013028_zps5e92fee2.jpg

And what dinner at Ohana would be complete without the Coconut race? Note the lack of a coconut anywhere within our reach, and my daughter's laser-like focus on...who knows?, which pretty much characterized our joint performance in said race.

After dinner we had a relaxing monorail ride around the resort loop. As you will see, we've been at WDW a grand total of 4 hours and our 3yo has already wisely selected two very unique and valuable souvenirs that I'm certain will give her many years of enjoyment. Note also the lei, prior to its encounter with Pascal.

All in all, it was a great first day at the World, and we hadn't even entered the parks! Much more to follow!

Day 2 - Epcot!
We hit the IG about 30 minutes prior to rope drop, and were told that the turnstiles would open about 15 minutes before 9am. This particular CM was quite happy to spend the next 15 minutes opining about the quality of Disney Cruise Lines, the effectiveness of guests writing letters to Disney Corporate, and the projected roll-out date of MM+. Finally, the call was made from the front gate, and we were able to walk into World Showcase!

disney2013084_zps562b19d7.jpg

Of course, we headed straight to Soarin for our little one's very first ride! She loved it!
disney2013087_zps10d97649.jpg

We then decided to hit up Nemo and the DW and kids did Turtle Talk while I got FP's for Test Track. Then it was the Imagination pavilion, which ended up being Ellie's (DD3) favorite of this trip.
disney2013095_zpsfb75c445.jpg

Unfortunately, the same could not be said of the new Test Track. While she was tall enough, it ended up being a very bad idea. By this time Future World was getting very crowded, and we were very thankful that we'd gotten FP's for TT, as the standby line was huge. The FP line ended up being the longest line we waited in all day, and just as we were getting to the design studio, the CM's decided to start routing the FP queue around the studio. So, we got to experience the new TT without designing our own car...which was frankly pretty disappointing. Of course, my experience of the ride itself *may* have been tainted by the fact that I had a sobbing 3yo clinging to me screaming "momma!" the entire time. Did. Not. Like.

Unfortunately, this experience really put her off many of the other rides she was finally tall enough to experience. Oh, well, there's always next time. At this point, we decided to head over to World Showcase, as it was about to open:

disney2013103_zps6eaadbcc.jpg

We headed straight to...rope drop at the Mexico pavilion? I had no idea this was a thing.
disney2013105_zps57bf2d07.jpg

It was actually quite entertaining, with a cute little countdown in Spanish, while we all stood sweating profusely in the blazing heat waiting for them to OPEN THE @$%#ing DOORS and let us in, please. Then followed the first of many many rides on the Gran Fiesta Tour, another of Ellie's favorites. DW was a bit disappointed to find that La Cava didn't open until after 12 noon, so no margaritas...yet. We then decided to go and find Mulan, as our little one wanted to tell her about how brave she had been riding Soarin.

disney2013106_zps55c5e099.jpg

And then on to our favorite place in all of WS - Karamelle Kuche!

disney2013114_zps45bcf791.jpg

You'll have noted the devious look in my sweet little daughter's eyes. She's like me in that she doesn't respond well to having to be agreeable in extreme heat. Our eldest DD was suggesting that they "share" the popcorn, which of course was a ludicrous proposition on its face. The result was as follows.

disney2013117_zpsa0f6f806.jpg

Moving along - what trip to Germany would be complete without a visit with Snow?

disney2013121_zpsf3435e79.jpg

The little one hadn't completely recovered from the earlier altercation, and you can see she looks thrilled to be standing next to her big sis. We wisely decided to walk back to the resort for a short rest before our dinner ADR at Via Napoli. At this point I have to mention the main crisis that occurred during this particular trip (we always have at least one). Our DD14's cell phone just quit working...if you have teenagers, you can imagine the weeping and gnashing of teeth that ensued. Actually, she handled it pretty well, but we used our down time to go out in search of a local store for our wireless provider. After driving into Orlando, and spending an hour at the store, we were told the phone was fubar - nothing they could do.

And now we're about to be late for our ADR, so I'm speeding back through Orlando, relying on the Garmin, which tends to have a hard time on WDW property. It can't really differentiate between service roads and proper roads, and well, let's just say we saw some things...

DW and the little one are already in WS by the time we get back to the resort, so Susanna (DD14) and I speed walk to Via Napoli. Thankfully, its a short walk and we made it just in time to be seated.

disney2013142_zps82332638.jpg

And dinner at Via Napoli was excellent! We had the Prosciutto e Melone pizza. I was a bit busy with the 3yo and didn't really pay attention to the description of this particular menu item, or I would've seen that it was basically a pizza crust with lettuce, prosciutto, and cantaloupe (which I really don't like at all). Not exactly something I would normally choose to be in the same room with, much less actually eat. Thankfully, I was very pleasantly surprised!

disney2013130_zpsad06118e.jpg

After dinner, a short stop to see Princess Aurora, followed by dessert at L'Artisan des Glaces!

disney2013153_zpsd0aef5bc.jpg

The ice cream was fantastic!
disney2013158_zps4aad73ee.jpg

disney2013162_zps07fbc4e9.jpg

Then, it was back to the resort for an evening swim!
disney2013163_zps31debe5b.jpg

Stormalong Bay was incredible - especially watching the fireworks from both Illuminations and DHS at night!
disney2013170_zpsaa7400d1.jpg

Finally, we walked over to the beach to catch the end of Toy Story 3, before heading off to bed.

Next Up - Day 3 at DHS, and a resolution to the Great Cell Phone Tragedy!

Ohhh yummmm Karamel Kutche!!!!! Well, I cant blame your little one for not sharing her popcorn, I don't either! LOL Really looking to trying Via Napoli this year too!!! Great pics!!!!

We were in that store many times this trip - I'm always a little ashamed of how much we spend there! Via Napoli was a really good experience. We'll definitely be back!

Great report! We have never stayed at the BC before either, so your info is great!

The cell phone....did it get replaced during the trip? That would be a "game over" for any of my boys.

Really enjoying your report so far! Your daughters are just beautiful and I love the Mickey shirts the little one is wearing! I have a DD15, and our trip begins in 13 days. I can't imagine what would happen if her phone became inoperable....yikes!

Thanks! Yes, the cell phone got replaced! We had insurance on it, and they sent us a brand new one via next day air, so she was back in business within a couple of days. I was actually very proud of how she handled it. She didn't complain at all, and it was kind of nice having her all to ourselves for a few days!

Great report so far. Our favorite park is also Epcot, we have our Jan trip booked at the Boardwalk Villas. I can't wait to be so close to my favorite park, your report is getting me excited!

I don't blame your little one for getting scared on TT, that ride is terrifying! I have only rode it once, and I was also begging for my mom! (I am 31  )

Looking forward to the rest of your report.

Enjoying the trip report and pictures. We had two 16 year old girls with us on our trip. One was ours the other her friend. The friends cord got broken with 2 days left. You would have thought someone put her in a bathtub full of ice and stole her kidney. If my daughter had acted the way this other girl did....let's just say she wouldn't have the phone for a month anyway. Well, because she needed to stay in touch with her "mom" it was actually a boy(we found out from our daughter), I felt she needed the plug so they went on the hunt. Enough of that long sad story. :D

Great TR!!! Glad you were able to work out the cell phone drama + I'm sure it came in really handy being staying so close to the IG and having to make it to Via Napoli. Seeing the Stormalong pic makes me wish it had been warmer when we stayed at YC/BC. Can't wait to read more! :)
