Why DisneySea wouldn't work at WDW

DarthTater asked me to make a new post about this.

It's basically from my observations on the visits I made to Tokyo DisneySea, and which elements just would not work at WDW, besides the obvious, like OLC spending $4 to 6 Billion in building it.

Let's be honest here, Disney as it is now would never, ever, go to the lengths of opening a park as intricate as DisneySea, but there are other factors that don't work in favor of WDW.

These are merely MY opinion, and others can feel free to disagree with me.

One of the big ones is that DisneySea is not as little kid friendly as most of the other parks. They have been making some changes to this, by adding attractions that already exist at WDW, such as Toy Story Mania, and Turtle Talk with Crush.

Another major draw for DisneySea is Fortress Explorations, which is the large, well, fortress you see in all of the promo pictures in front of the Volcano. It is a great area, with lots of activities...and stairs....and more stairs...and small crevices...and more stairs....and hidden walkways...and more stairs...and small interior spaces. Basically Kryptonite to anyone in an ECV or wheelchair.

I don't think there's any real elevators, and that just would never work at WDW without some MAJOR, MAJOR re-working.

There is also a boat outside that you can climb all over, with more narrow stairs, crevices, etc. There's a few things you can push, cannons you can "shoot" from, telescopes to view other parts of the park, etc.

Mysterious Island is another place with lots of stairs, if you choose to really explore it. I'm just trying to compare that to the WDW parks where stairs are very rarely found, or there's always elevators nearby. Tokyo is chock full of stairways, so people are used to it.

Another section, which I may be a bit over-stating, is the Arabian section, home to an Aladdin show and the Sinbad boat ride. Overall there is nothing to dislike here, except the first time I saw this, I thought...I dont' think something this arabian would ever fly for the average closed-minded American tourist.

Yes, we have a Morocco section at Epcot that was before all of this sentiment about un-trustworthy middle-easterners developed in the U.S. (not that Morocco is even in the Middle east or arabia, but culturally similar)

I may be wrong, but I just don't see Disney taking that leap.

Hotel Mira-Costa is a very nice hotel with direct access to the park. Yes it IS expensive to stay there, but not more than the WDW hotels I don't believe. And you know what would happen if they built that at WDW...............DVC....DVC....DVC.

We also probably wouldn't get all of the unique popcorn flavors that both Tokyo parks have...people would complain too much that there isn't any "plain" popcorn.

The extensive usage of stairs certainly closes the door for this happening in America. Americans despise stairs, and Japan isn't as lawsuit-happy as western cultures are. That is a disaster waiting to happen if built in the U.S.. :(

Very sad to hear, as it seems like such a beautiful park. Good findings, Chris.

What all does Mysterious Island consist of besides JCE & 20K? I know it has a restaurant of sorts, and probably gift shops (this is Disney afterall ;) ). But are there hidden trails & places inside the volcano to explore, in the likes of Tom Sawyer's Island, where you have to be looking in the right place to find something hidden? I've seen in videos where you walk under rocks, past waterfalls, etc. But are there more areas in the volcano not shown often?

Select attractions from DisneySea would be nice to see come over. I'd love to see JTTCOTE and 20k come over, but we know that won't happen. Stormrider would be a nice centerpiece to an Epcot weather pavilion...

The volcano itself, no walking areas, but Mysterious Island has the Nautilus you can walk down and take a look at, there's also a few restaurant areas:

One Little Spark...
What a great ad that was! Beautiful story, shows a lot of this phenomenal park. I dare WDW to make any of their TV ad's that beautiful & emotional.

Nah. The closest the come is using a catch pop band song (that has repeated cursing in it, by the way...still a good song, and Disney edits out that part, but still...not a song to teach your kid!) and showing pictures of DLC while trying to sell you that it's Magic Kingdom.

I've been to Disney Sea in Tokyo.

It wasn't as mind blowing as suggested. Very overrated if anything. Theming was nice in some areas, but most of the attractions are a let down.

I think this is the first time I've ever heard anyone speak that way about Disneysea.

How hard could it possibly be to slightly redesign certain park areas to not have stairs?
We're contemplating the possibility of making a theme park ADA compliant, not building it on the moon.

Also, Aladdin is about as "Arabian" as it gets, came out right after the Gulf War, and made over $350 in today's dollars in the U.S. alone.
I don't think you'd have to worry about the tourists staying away.

Have you been?

I wasn't that impressed. It was new, so that made it interesting. But it wasn't better than any Disney park in Orlando.

It even had the Tower of Terror there, Indiana Jones ... so just your standard Disney rides in different themes. There was only one worldclass attraction there that you couldn't find at other Disney parks.

The Tower of Terror has a completely different theme and storyline than the U.S. Parks. The hotel doesn't even look at all the same.

At night, there are supernatural effects that you can see from outside the attraction, green lights that glow and move around the ride vehicle before it falls.

Indiana Jones has a much more elaborate queue and parts of the ride are much more intricately detailed than the Anaheim version. Walls which are just painted with images in Anaheim are actually "rockwork" in TDS, plus the entire land is themed to the attraction, not just a back-woods area of Adventureland.

20K Leagues Under the Sea, Big Band Beat, Sinbad's Storybook Voyage, Journey to the Center of the Earth are all world-class, UNIQUE attractions in mine, and many others opinions. But if you go there ONLY for attractions or thrills, you're missing the point.

you can call me a foamer I suppose, a Seafoamer:D
