TiW Alcohol Discounts at CS Locations

I was at DAK a couple of months ago and ordered some food and 2 beers at the Flame Tree BBQ. The cashier was a new employee and had never had to apply a TiW discount so he called over his manager who was just a few steps away. The manager showed him how to apply the discount, but would only apply it to the food. After I told him it was supposed to be applied to the alcohol, he told me there is no way they would ever discount alcohol, that it would be bad buisness for them to do that. I tried to correct him and even offered to show him a receipt I had in my pocket from Le Cellier from earlier in the day that contained a discount on wine, but he told me if they applied that discount at Epcot then I got lucky because they weren't supposed to. I gave up arguing and told him I would just stop at guest relations on the way out, he replied "Go Ahead" and walked away. I never did bother to stop as it was only $2 and I figured it wasn't that big of a deal.

Then this past weekend, I stopped at Restaurantosaurus and made a similar order - 2 meals & 2 draft beers. The cashier applied the food discount, but not the drink discount. When I asked, the cashier said they don't discount alcohol. I didn't press any further, as I thought maybe I was wrong.

When I got back to the hotel I checked everywhere on the TiW site and there is nothing about excluding the CS from the alcohol discount. I even emailed the TiW contact address to ask about this specifically, I received a reply confirming that the discount does apply to alcohol at the participating counter service locations.

Has anyone else had trouble receiving this discount at DAK? I'm wondering if I just got unlucky with a few CM's (and a manager) that weren't aware of the proper discount or if the CM's are specifically told not to discount alcohol.

I wonder how they would have reacted if you pulled up the TiW website. I mean, it specifically says...

BENEFITS INCLUDE
  • 20% discount on all food and beverages, including alcohol, at over 100 participating Theme Park and Resort restaurants (discount is valid for a party of up to 10 Guests including the member)

I am interested in this b/c we are looking into becoming DVC members at the GF for our next stay in Feb. So I was asking about the TIW and the agent said all food and drink . However, i'm reading two words in the above posts that have me curious: at "participating" CS locations and then at over 100 participating Them Park and Resort restaurants. Is it possible AK CS just doesn't participate? Seems totally odd that they wouldn't. But curious why it states participating rather then all.

Actually, that's the funny part...the website has a list of all participating locations and AK is pretty much the only park with CS spots that participate in TiW. This is the portion on AK on the TiW website...

PARTICIPATING LOCATIONS*

Animal Kingdom®
  • Flame Tree Barbecue
  • Pizzafari
  • Restaurantosaurus
  • Tusker House Restaurant
Participating Restaurants are subject to change without notice.
* Excludes all Chef’s Tables at Disney Signature Restaurants. The Tables in Wonderland discount cannot be used in combination with any other discount and is not valid for Fantasmic Dinner Package, Food and Wine Festival events, Candlelight Packages, or other Special Events.

(I'll spare you the full list of locations) I could be wrong, but I would think it would specify "excluding alcohol" if that was a stipulation at that participating location...i.e. since all of the wording implies that alcohol is included at all participating locations.

Edit- and considering how all of the resort and park lounges are included ... it screams alcohol included.

Ha! Yep! They are certainly part of it! So what do we have to do...walk around with a list of participating places so the cast members/managers know what is going on? How can they not know when it is there in black and white. You are right....screams booze included!

I guarantee that most cast members who work at either of those locations have never been on the website to see the complete list of participating locations. Same with DVC and Annual Pass. When they are hired and trained at a location, they are simply told by their trainer or management what discounts to take. So it sounds like this is a case of management either not being fully informed of the TiW entitlements or illegally trying to block discounts to retain profits for their location. When it's a matter of a couple bucks here and there, I'm guessing the manager is unaware of the full entitlements only because the card is mostly for TSR locations and not QSR locations. If there is nothing on the website that specifies "food only" then the discount must be applied to everything. I think they got TiW confused with the DVC, Annual Pass and CM discounts, non of which receive a discount on alcohol to my knowledge. Although, there is a little line underneath that says "Participating restaurants subject to change without notice." So there is a little grey area that Disney might be able to fall back on. *Buyer Beware*

I agree with you here. I'm still curious as to if I was just unlucky both of these times or if this is a chronic problem.

I have never had a problem. Whenever we are @ AK and want a beer we would hit Restaurantasaurus, Pizzafari or Flame tree. Our TIW discount was always applied and we never once were questioned nor did we have to question the CM. I am really shocked to hear this. Isn't this an automatic discount that is applied once the cashier hits the TIW disc button?

Glad to hear that it wasn't a problem for you. On my receipts there are 2 seperate line items for the food discount and the drink discount, so I'm thinking they may need to actually press 2 different buttons on the register. On the 2 trips to DAK they both only added the line item for 20% food discount. All of my MK and EPCOT receipts had both food and drink.
