Packing?? When??

I'm a little crazy as my suitcases were out in December for my June trip. All I put in them then were things we got for Christmas for the trip. But now I've started actually started to pack, my overnight bag is packed and today I'm going to pack the backpack we're going to use in DTD. So when do you start packing and do you use a packing list?

I started about 3 weeks out and yes I had a list. I even took the list with me to WDW to make sure I re-packed everything leaving nothing behind. We had 1 suitcase that Dear Hubby and I share, my daughter's suitcase, 1 overnight bag, and 2 back packs. One back pack we used at WDW or whenever we travel and the 2nd is my daughters travel back pack that she has books, games etc. so she can have things to do while we drive. About 6 months out I started buying stuff for our bathroom bags and writing the list. But for planning well I started planning the next trip on the drive home from the first.:)

Well, I have also started packing, sort of, for our trip at the end of Nov. When I say sort of it's because it's a big reusable bag not a suitcase and it's not clothes but things like detergent pods & dryer sheets.

For our suitcases I'll probably start a week or two ahead since we'll be out for Thanksgiving. I'll have time to get the laundry done and not have to worry about what we're wearing during the Thanksgiving vacation. Non-clothing items will probably be around the two week mark.

We leave in August and have a few things set aside already. As far as suitcases go that will start happening at the beginning of July. Usually around the 45 day mark. Really for the kids clothes. I like them to wear new things and I buy them as they go on sale and them pack them so they don't wear them!

I have a list that gets slightly modified every trip!

I use a packing list, which is fine-tuned for each trip. For me, the list takes all the stress out of packing: I know that if I've checked off every box, nothing has been left behind!

Our packing follows a general progression: we pack the day before, but it all starts a couple of weeks ahead of time.

About 2 weeks before we depart, I finalize the list. I refill prescriptions and do any necessary shopping for grocery items (we bring our own breakfasts), sunscreen, new toothbrushes, dollar store ponchos, new sunglasses or sandals for the kids, etc. Then I do all the laundry, select and gather outfits for each of us, and start to assemble them in spare laundry baskets (1 for each person). This keeps everything organized and visible (and unwrinkled), and allows for easy access if we decide to change or add anything.

The day before we leave, I carefully roll and zip all of our clothes into packing cubes, and pack one 21" rolling carryon per person. Food items then get bagged and packed into the extra space in the kids' carryons. (They're 5 and 6, so their clothes don't take up a lot of space yet!) All non-liquid toiletry items go in the extra space in my carryon (I recommend the eBags "Pack it Flat" toiletry case -- it's amazingly compact and easy to pack), and DH and I each put a 3-1-1 "liquids and gels" ziploc bag in an outside pocket of our carryon for when we go through security. Since we typically depart early in the morning, I also lay out our "travel clothes," generally comprised of the bulkiest items we plan to bring: a comfy pair of long pants, a T-shirt, a sweatshirt or fleece, and sneakers for each of us.

Also the day before we leave, we pack all of our "personal items" for the plane. For me, it's my crossbody purse (which serves as my park bag) with ID, credit card, camera, phone, sunglasses, a mini first-aid kit (a baggie with band-aids, alcohol wipes and blister pads), hand sanitizing wipes, all travel documents, etc. For DH, it's a backpack with reading materials, headphones (if flying JetBlue, which has the seat-back TVs), his sunglasses and hat, inhaler and epiPen (his asthma and allergies like to travel with him) etc. The kids each take a small backpack with their Crayola Color Wonder sets, a couple of new activity/sticker books (plus any homework from school), their own headphones, and a "care package" of apple wedges, Twizzlers, raisins, and similar snacks.

So far, so good -- we've never had any trouble carrying our own luggage, forgotten anything we needed, or brought anything we didn't need, and unpacking at the hotel takes no more than 10 minutes. :D

I start "pre-packing" 8 weeks before a trip. I get out the suitcases, the coolers, beach recliners, and other things that I will not be needing prior to the trip. I put them all in the extra room upstairs just to keep everything together, and anything that I might think of over the next couple months, which we may need, I put up there in the prepack room. Here are some other things I throw up there, which I generally have no need of around home prior to the trip:

My "vacation wallet". It has a chain on it so I can make sure it doesn't slip its way out of my pocket while sitting on the monorail, the porcelain pot, etc. I normally use a regular wallet, but when I am over 1,000 miles away, with theme park tickets, room key, credit card, and cash, the last thing I want on vacation is to reach back and find my wallet missing.

Bag of beach towels.

Bag of beach/pool toys

shorts and tanktops. We normally go in the spring, so I have no need of that stuff leading up to the trip, plus I don't wear it too much around here during the summer anyway.

New package or two of socks. I normally need new socks each year, as I wear holes in my old ones, so I just pack some new ones for the trip and open them when we get there.

Pin lanyards and squished penny books.

I think that's mostly it. The rest of it has to be packed the day of or a day or two before we leave.

I usually start updating my list as soon as I know the trip is booked. The actual packing usually begins 2-3 weeks before the trip as I gather things that won't be needed before we leave. As I do laundry during that time, I pull out anything that I know will be going, so it won't be worn again before the trip. The actual packing of the suitcases happens 2-3 days before the trip. This time we are flying for the first time, so packing is a little different for us. We'll see how it goes.

I am an avid list maker LOL Everything gets its own pile in one of my spare bedrooms, then crossed off the list. I usually start with *incidentals* about 2 weeks before. A week before, all of our *vacation* clothes (tshirts, shorts) get ironed and laid out on the bed in the same room everything else is in. Suitcases get sprayed with lysol (I know, right!??!!?) I have everyone do a once over and atleast 2 days before our trip, said suitcases are all packed and ready to go.
