I read on another site that Disney does not do Winnie the Pooh cakes, do you know why? Just curious.

This is true. Even though they are able to do the rides, M&G characters, and merch, they do not have the rights to the characters to put them on cakes. I don't really understand all of it, but it's actually been coming up more lately as they're having other copyright issues as well. Recently, the GF has turned people down on cakes with both Rapunzel & Sofia the First. And here's a real head scratcher, I'm helping a college friend with a cake and they say they can no longer do Lightning McQueen due to copyright issues, but they can do Mater. I'm still digging around the interwebs on this one as it makes no sense to me.

I agree, but for whatever reason they can't and won't. Anyone wanting Pooh & Friends is pretty much stuck bringing plastic figures from home.
According to:

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington ruled that the family had transferred all its Pooh rights to Disney.

Sounds to me like Disney just doesn't want to do this....not that they cannot.

Perhaps TWDC hasn't given permission the the Parks Division to use the characters as they see fit. Perhaps the company is trying to prevent over-saturation of these characters by withholding them from the parks indiscriminate use of their likenesses.

I love cake. In fact, saying, "I love cake" is an understatement. I think cake is probably one of the greatest gifts God gave us, up there after doctors, drug companies and technology.

If I had to choose between cake and clothes, I'd take a deserted island and cake.

I never found anywhere to buy good cake in central Florida and had begun making my own.

I cannot eat it right now, but think a thread devoted to cake is an EXCELLENT idea.

They do have strict rules about no sculpting of characters which stems from some of this. i.e. the only 3d characters you'll get are those that have approved white chocolate molded figures. Still, they could easily make a whole series of approved molds for all of the characters...but I guess they just don't see the need. On top of that, they will reject cake themes deemed to be questionable. Ex. I know of a person who wanted a monorail over the hill cake for their spouse, but they wouldn't do it b/c it would also suggest the monorail is over the hill.

As for the rights to characters, I really don't understand any of the limitations since it only seems logical that they'd have full rights and access to all of the Disney characters, art, etc. Still, if you want a cake through one of their bakeries, you're pretty much bound by what they will and won't do...which sometimes even varies by location. i.e. the GF may do something the Contemporary won't and vice versa. This is part of why some people have chosen to use offsite bakeries that deliver to WDW. The cost is a bit higher in most cases + involves delivery charges, but private bakers are more flexible.

People turn to me at work on a daily basis and say similar things...but it's laced with the suggestion that I should make them cake. ;)

I don't know if this helps, but these are the off site bakeries a lot people use if they want a cake at WDW, but don't want to deal with the limitations of the Disney bakeries...

Anna Cakes
Bake Me a Cake

And if you're ever in south FL, my parents swear by this place...

While not a WDW cake or even a Disney themed cake, this is a large verion of their Opera cake...

Thanks for this! When I'm cake-eating again (soon, I hope), I will absolutely check them out!

These cakes all look too pretty to eat. :)

I ordered a cake for our DDs birthday at Spirit of Aloha  inedible... Got a refund.
Gave Disney a second chance 7 years later ordered a cake for DDs birthday at Disneyland. Cute but more frosting than cake.
I give up.... never again.
We got a cake once and it was terrible, well the frosting was anyway. It tasted as though it had been stored in a fridge or freezer for a long time with vegetables. The buttercream tasted like onions! Just like butter that's been in the fridge too long and absorbed the fridge smells. It was fine if we scraped the frosting off but the frosting is usually the best part! Thankfully our wedding cake years earlier was fantastic!

This seems to be a problem among a number of the buttercream cakes. It seems that some of them are freshly made just like the fondant covered cakes, while others are from an outside distributor...pre-made, frozen, etc. - and ultimately, often not good. That's not to say there aren't some duds among the fondant cakes, but it just seems to be a bigger problem among some of the buttercreams. Still, no good when you get the yucky cake. I guess at least the wedding cake was great :)

I think whatever-the-company's-name-is that owns the rights to Winnie the Pooh is less likely to sue an individual who makes cakes than they are a maaaaajor global entertainment empire such as TWDC. Wouldn't ya think?

What's really interesting to me in all of this is that Disney partnered with Wilton several years ago for a number of official Pooh cake items. I have a Wilton/Disney lollipop mold/pan w/Pooh's face as well as the official Winnie the Pooh 4-color food coloring set. So, they're perfectly fine with making it possible for you to make official Pooh cake stuff at home, just not through their resorts.
