Hi everyone! I know everything about WDW it seems except for taking a flight. I know about DME, but I'm wondering what to pack, how to pack ( 2 adults 2 children), and any other bits of advice you may have for flying. June 9-14 is our trip. We usually drive ( 14 hours) but hubby wants to think about flying. We're getting too old for the drive! LOL. My hubby and I haven't flown since 1997 for our honeymoon to Hawaii, so that was pre 9-11! Not sure about the boys and DS gaming devices, and such. Any help is appreciated! Thanks everyone.;)

1 - Get a fish scale from a sporting goods place (Walmart has them too). You can pack this with you to weigh your luggage so you know what they weigh.
2 - Get some space bags. They compress the clothing to a fraction of their size and make much needed room for other stuff. Use Mousekeeping's vacuum the day before you leave to compress them.
3 - Take things to occupy the time for the kids for about 4 hours worth of flight time (including layover) if the drive normally takes 14 hours.
4 - Be absolutely sure to get leak proof Ziplock freezer bags to put shampoos, liquid soaps, and any other liquids in so they do not ruin your clothing in the checked bags. You cannot take those onto a plane any more. They must be in checked bags. Also, put these ziplock bags in the middle of the case so they do not get banged at the edge of the luggage and bust.

We always fly. So far, Southwest Airlines every trip. But, we are also about a 22 hr. drive away... Takeoff to main gear screachin' the runway at MCO is about 3 hrs. It's always been a breeze for us, and we LOVE it! :)
We usually go in the summer and always pack light (well, myself and DS do, anyway ;) - we share a suitcase), but, of course, make sure you have something to fly back souvenirs, if you are normally used to that when driving. Also, any questions you have can be answered by visiting the websites of, or calling, Disney, the airline y'all settle on, or the TSA.
I can't even describe to you what an awesome feeling it is to be there and on DME in about 3-1/2 hours and on our way to the resort without a care in the World...! :)

The seats are an average of about 17" across. If anyone doesn't fit with the armrest down, they can make you buy another seat. You cannot say, "Well, my kid has an extra three inches that I'll use." (First class seats are bigger.)

Many airlines charge you a per-suitcase fee that is not included in your ticket. The suitcases have weight limits, usually 50 pounds. (First class bags are generally free)

You can't take liquids in 20 oz bottles through security, but you can take them on the plane if you buy them in an airport gift shop or whatever. There are rules about how many ounces of shampoo (I think it is 3) you can take. All your little 3oz bottles have to fit into a sandwich bag. I just pack all my liquid crap.

Usually, you get two pieces of carry-on per person. If you have a purse, that's one! The kids get two, too.

Most airplanes have TVs in the seats now, I think. I don't know if they charge a fee for the headphones in coach or not. My sister recently flew on a plane that didn't have the TVs in the coach section, so I guess they don't all, but I think most do.

I'd let the boys bring their little handheld video games (don't know what the popular one is now), iPods if they have them and anything that will keep them occupied. If you give one the window seat on the way down and one the window seat on the way back, everyone wins. :)

I always put extra cream on my arms and legs because flying dries me out. I try to drink as much water (not pop or juice) as humanly possible, too.

I'm always one of, if not THE last person on the plane and one of (if not THE) first people off the plane. They'll let you board early if you have kids...but if the boys can just get on and sit down without banging other people's seats, get on the plane last. I never understand why everyone wants to get on as soon as possible. You're going to be sitting in that seat for hours!

Every airline will have detailed info about what they charge per bag. The TSA has a website about what you can and can't take through security.

If you buy stuff at WDW that you don't have room to fly home, have them ship it. If you do this while purchasing, they skip the tax, so the cost is roughly the same. In this way, you don't have to worry about fitting stuff into your suitcase or carry-on. :)

I don't know anything about DME. Sorry.

Have a great flight!

And don't forget your DME carry-on to include anything you might need for about 3 hours after arrival (normally the time before your luggage appears). We always travel as lightly as possible on any flight.
That's what I was going to suggest =)

Here's the TSA's site on packing liquids in your carry on. It's pretty useful.

Your boys can definitely bring their DS's on the flight, they'll be fine. Be sure to shut off your cell phones, or put them on airplane mode during the flight.

Also keep in mind that you can ship a box to yourself at your resort! I used to always ship boxes with snacks (m&m's, jerky, mints), ponchos, OTC meds, laundry detergent powder (because I always feared the suspicious-factor in luggage), sunscreen, etc. Also, if you buy a lot of souvenirs and it won't all make it back in your luggage you can go to your resort's front desk and ask for boxes & shipping assistance. If you are staying at a resort with a conference/business center they have facilities designated for this type of thing. If not, ask at the front desk and they will guide you. We've shipped boxes of crap home on many trips in the past. I know 1 trip in particular we had so much stuff we ended up with 3 pretty sizeable boxes. Wasn't too expensive, either. Resorts will have accounts with different shipping companies that will usually score better shipping rates than if you could get as an individual. ;)

I am a travel agent and travel quite a bit, Southwest is a great carrier for luggage, they don't charge for the first two bags per ticketed traveler, however they are the only airline to charge for an extra seat if they think you are too large to fit into one seat, if they do, you usually can get a refund after your travel, if you call a speical number with in Southwest.

I agree with most of the other posters, bags cant be larger then 50lbs or they will charge you a overweight fee which can be quite expensive- IF you bring any liquids carry-on they can't be more then 1 ounce bottles which you can get at dollor store. They also need be put in 1 quart Ziplock baggies.

I also agree the space bags are a godsend! Also since your bags are going to be delivered by DME, I would carry on a bag that you need at least for the first 3-5 hours thats usually how long it takes to get your bags delivered.

How does everyone know that I'm a large woman! LOL. I hope I fit into 1 seat. When we went to Hawaii, I barely fit, but I was also 50 pounds heavier.:(
