Kidd's back - Some observations

Just got back from 7 nights at the Wilderness Lodge Villas. I don't do trip reports, as I find them kind of boring to do, but I like to share certain experiences, both good and bad, so here we go:

Crowds: Since when did MLK week become so crowded. I've been in January a dozen times, and never seen it as crowded as it was, especially at MK. Sunday, January 20, was worse than a weekend in July.

Resort: Staying at Wilderness Lodge always makes me realize, for me, this is the best resort on property. It's clean as can be, has wonderful CM's, is themed like no other, and has wonderful food.

Dining: For the first time EVER, I actually made every one of my ADR's. All meals were great. Standouts include Ohana, Via Napoli, Whispering Canyon, San Angel Inn and The Plaza. Only bad meal I had was the banana bread french toast at Whispering Canyon. Simply too heavy and moist for my liking.

Test Track 2.0: I was waiting to pass judgement on this until I rode it. Well, I rode it 3 times to make sure I got a good feel for it and didn't miss anything. It sucks. They ripped the heart and soul from the ride. My 6 year old boys loved Test Track, and understood it. The weather tests, the rough road tests, the braking test, etc. Having the human voice along with you really made it both fun and enjoyable for kids. Now, they won't understand what the hell is going on. Responsiveness, Power, Reliability - I barely understood it. And the OnStar thing is just such a cheap plug for Chevy. As for designing your own car, skip it. Complete waste of time.

New Fantasyland: Mixed bag really. There is very little room to move around, what with the walls around the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. I liked the Little Mermaid attraction, though it is ridiculously unimaginative. Some of the effects weren't working the 1st time we rode it, and when we went back for a 3rd time, it was down due to technical difficulties. Storybook Circus doesn't make much sense to me. Same thing as Toontown, just without Mickey and Minnie's House. Gaston's Tavern is too small. The cinnamon rolls there are not the same as at Main Street Bakery. Smaller and not as moist.

As for "Is the Magic still there?", yeah, it is. But it has waned some. But I don't really fault Disney for this. I go way too much, and with my bad back, it's simply not as enjoyable as it was when I was younger. So, we're going this summer (God willing, the specialist I'm seeing this week will be able to do SOMETHING about my back), and that will be it for a couple of years. 2014 will be Disneyland. I'm thinking after that, maybe a cruise or Hawaii.

We were there on Tuesday 1/22 for the day. The Disney Magic sailing out of Galveston made a port call in Port Canaveral. Transport to/from the parks + a 1-day PH was included in the cruise fare. This plugged an additional roughly 2k guests into the parks. Anywhoo, we thought it was very busy at the parks. Uncomfortably so for us. We ended up returning to the ship a little early to escape the throngs.

Our parks goals for the day were to hit up TT2.0 and the new stuff at the MK. We weren't impressed with Test Track. Definitely felt like a major overall loss. Without too much more detail, my old man was seriously PO'd. I overheard him tell his folks night before last that he doesn't care if he ever goes back to Epcot.

I agree with ya on the mermaid ride. It's a great queue, beautifully themed, that ends in a plasticated, sparse ride. Seriously. We waited 50 minutes for it. Um, not worth much more than a walk-on. How does an omnimover get such a long wait anyway? It was very crowded around the FLE, too crowded to really take it in or observe much. We were dodging & weaving back there. After an hour investment in Mermaid, a visit to Gaston's but nowhere to sit to enjoy our snack, and a pass thru the sparse shop next door we were pretty over this over-hyped corner of the park. Wasn't about to wait an hour to hear a story I already know well. And wasn't at all interested in dodging and weaving our way thru the masses to see Dumbo's Circusland. Nope. Instead we stood in lines for 2 more favorite attractions we never experience lines for then decided we'd much rather be away from the chaos and back in our Disney eutopia onboard the ship.

We definitely remembered the things we were "over" in the parks 16 months ago. Won't make that mistake again. ;)

I like the LM ride and am sorry so many people dislike it. ITA that they could have made that Fantasyland walkway bigger! Would another five or ten feet have killed them? It gets very crowded sometimes!

Glad you enjoyed San Angel Inn. So many people dump on it and it really isn't bad at all!

I hope you are feeling better for your next trip!

I didn't dislike it. I thought it was cute, and since I prefer the movie, is better than Nemo. It's just kind of lazy.

They should have totally given the 20KL sea serpent a cameo.

That alone would have made up for any deficiencies in the ride.

EDIT -- And thank you for being yet another confirmation of my fears as to how half-assed Tron Track is.

I have been wondering if the walkways wont be bigger once the walls are down. Those do take up some room.

Looking at overhead photos I don't think the walkways will be much wider even when they do open the mine train. Most of the space is either for the attraction itself, the shops behind it or paths directly related for it. The main pedestrian space will remain almost exactly them same except the currently somtimes open path from Mermaid to SBC.

People dump on San Angel Inn? I love that place. Some of the best atmosphere and food in the parks!

That's kinda unnerving to think there won't be much additional walkway space in this area. It's already a PITA to get thru. Once they add more traffic to get to the mine train it's only going to get worse?

Something else I forgot to add in - Resort TV continues to get worse and worse. Since I was laid up much of this trip, I was in the room looking for something to watch. Not much to choose from. One thing of interest is, remember old channel 96 with the classic cartoon loop that they still have in the lobby's, but not in the rooms? Well, if you've watched the Disney Channel anytime recently you'll have seen this animated shorts called "Have A Laugh", which is just a 3 minute version of the 8 minute classic cartoons. That's what they have a loop of now. Why not just bring the regular loop back (or a new one) with the entire cartoon? Some decisions Disney makes really and truly make no sense.

The Spanish channel is probably the least annoying of the Disney TV channels, IMO. Also the Disney weather channel with the Muzak version of Jolly Holiday and other Disney songs. But in-room TV is not the best.

I prefer Uni for hotel TV. You get USA. :)

Yeah, but if I've warned them once I've warned them a hundred times: One day that volcano in the background is going to go off and then it will be disaster and all we will hear for weeks will be "How could this have happened?" and "Oh the humanity!" But what can you do ya know?

Seriously love that pavilion - would gladly live there.
