What has Bob Igor done for WDW?

Since becoming CEO, what new construction projects has Bob Iger approved and started at WDW besides FLE and the now unofficially cancelled Avatarland? I can't think of any, besides Toy Story Mania, the Art of Animation Resort and Splitsville, Test Track 2.0, Next Gen projects, rehabs of PotC, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, It's a Small World, etc., but how many of those were approved or scheduled for construction before Iger became CEO?

So, FLE is really the only big new project to get green lit and built so far under Iger, while DLR seems to be getting a blank check for the DCA redo. How long has Igor been CEO so far? Under Eisner's watch, like him or hate him, it seems like so much more were approved and built - two whole theme parks, two water parks, Downtown Disney, Splash Mountain, dozens of hotels, etc. Since Iger, with the exception of FLE, it seems that growth at WDW has come to a screeching halt! Has it? If so, why?

Universal is taking advantage of this. It's building rides all over the place. However, I agree and disagree with you. Igor isn't doing well on expansions, but I think he's doing pretty good on rides. But I don't know why the expansions/theme parks have seemed to have stopped. I miss the excitement they give me.

Rumor has it Universal is about $1.5 billion in expansion projects for Florida. Maybe this will change Igor's mind. Or we may have to wait until he retires, which is soon, from what I hear.

BY THE WAY, go to my Yes, Another Monorail Thread thread and go to my latest message there. I imagineered a great idea for a project. Let me know what you think!

Bob Iger bought Marvel Studios.

Bob Iger mended the fences between the Walt Disney Company and Roy E. Disney, thus bringing a happy ending to their "Save Disney" campaign.

Bob Iger traded Al Michaels at ESPN to bring back Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Bob Iger bought Pixar, then installed John Lasseter as Chief Creative Officer at Disney Animation Studios and Principal Chief Adviser for Walt Disney Imagineering.

All he needs to do now is shake up the leadership at TDO and get the parks in Orlando the same kind of TLC found at Anaheim and Tokyo.

Edit: My time-line was off on the following statement...I think we've all made mistakes.

He also shut down Disney Animation Studios in Florida effectively killing whatever semblance of credibility and authenticity TPFKADMGMS ever had.

I was talking specifically about WDW. No doubt he's been a great CEO in general, when you consider the company as a whole.

What is TDO?

It was Steve Jobs who insisted that John Lasseter be made Chief Creative Officer, by the way. It was negotiated as part of the Pixar deal made between Disney as Jobs.

No, that was Eisner.
"Roy Disney blasts Eisner for Orlando animation closing"
http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/stories/2004/01/12/daily13.html
That was the straw that broke the camel's back and finally forced Eisner out as CEO.
I always thought Roy E. Disney had a "calming" effect on Iger's propensity to number crunch every decision. After the "Save Disney" battle, Iger had to keep Roy placated to avoid another ugly war. When Roy E. died in 2009, the theme parks lost their best ally.

If he is responsible for this building of time-share that is cluttering up the views around the Seven Seas lagoon, he can't go soon enough.

Unlike so many, I'm not a fan of BLT and don't want more time-share in that area.

I don't care about Disney building time-share, but it is ruining the lovely views.

Closed Wonders of Life in 2007, Pleasure Island in 2008, and Sounds Dangerous! in 2012. OK, maybe we should thank him for that last one.:)

Of course, he did give us Bay Lake Tower, Aulani, and the upcoming Grand Floridian Villas. I know a lot of people on this forum think Disney does not have enough DVC.

Seriously, Iger has never been a "theme parks guy". He just doesn't understand them as a business or individually, very different than his predecessors.

There's a quote from Eisner I will never forget. You know, Eisner was president of Paramount before coming to Disney, so he understood the movie business and the budgets required to make a movie. Soon after he settled in at Disney, he was at the model shop of Imagineering at Glendale, CA, looking for a new attraction to approve. After he learned that the rides all have scripts and stories, he also learned that the cost of a new attraction is comparable to the cost of a new film production. A blockbuster film costs the same as an E-ticket attraction.

I forget the exact words, but it went something like this: "I can do this. Approving a budget for a new theme park ride is exactly like film production." He said this some time after being made CEO.

Eisner inherited an underdeveloped Orlando property. Common sense dictated a massive building effort.

Iger inherited a mature investment in Orlando. Sensible policy dictated a very different approach.

In Anaheim, the situation was almost the reverse, and here Iger did instigate a massive investment program. Iger is barely less reluctant than Eisner to spend, he just had less of an incentive to do so in Orlando.
