Where at DHS was this?

This is a picture of my step-sister and I from a trip to MGM in 1989. I'm desperately trying to place where this is/was. I thought I had figured it out by accident by reading a trip report with a picture of a building by Lights, Motors, Action! that has a similar arch and a garage door but the windows around it are wrong and the size of the opening in the doorway seems a little off.

I have a feeling wherever this building was, it's not there anymore and that's why I'm having a hard time placing it's location. Maybe it is still there but looks completely different. Either way, I'm desperately trying to place it and looking to you fine folks to help! :)

I think I just figured this out and admittedly I am now in awe. This is the entrance to the current Backlot tour isn't it?

Yup those are both the same picture... They used to have the who framed roger rabbit slime machine there...
Well yeah, that's what we are being "squirted by" in that first shot. DHS continues to be one of those things that I am always rediscovering. I went many times before the production studios shut down but I have very little in the way of visual memories of the differences. As a result, I'm often looking at old pictures from my trips and trying to place what I'm looking at. Some stuff is obvious like things from the old residential street. Other stuff, like this, is less obvious. I kind of enjoy playing detective so I can update the MGM pages of my site. :D

Im at work atm... so will have to dig deeper, but if I recall the 1989 pic was in town square. The facade must have had to have been moved to its current location. The backlot tour had neither an entrance nor an exit at the current location, indeed the current location was not open to guests (Mickey Avenue) in 1989.

At a guess, the second photo looks like it has the side of the GMR. This must be the side street before Muppet Vision.

It'll be interesting to find out if indeed the facade was moved. I looked at an old map though and I have a feeling it wasn't. The water effects tank (which would've been directly behind that facade as it is today if it didn't move) was back on the inaccesible part of the park yes but outside the tank was part of the walking tour of the set areas (which in looking at the order the pictures were taken in my album would fit). The one entire side of the facade is different when you compare the two but the brick portions you can see where they essentially bricked up some of the windows right next to the arch. Because the water effects tank didn't move though, I think it's the same location, I don't think the facade was moved... but if you find out otherwise that'd be great! I honestly don't know so filling in the blank would be lovely!

I'm trying to picture where you're talking about. If you have a shot of that spot "now" that'd be awesome.

Thanks for that. Saved me a hunt.

I was confused - there is a similar facade in town sq. Monahans was indeed moved, and originally hosted the Toon Machine as part of the Tour. I did think it was always part of the tram tour, interesting you're on foot there.

Nice vid btw RAXIP :)

The Monahan's Freight facade used to be here. About where the ABC Commissary is today.

WOW! Thank you SO much for that! Help me try to figure out where I am here... that huge building to the left of it, what was/is that? Is that where Muppets is now? What about the small building to the right of it? Is that the back of GMR? I'm just trying to get the visual in my head.

Jenn, the red circle is now MuppetVision. The large building in the middle is the rear of the GMR. The photo was taken about over World Drive.

Gotcha ok! Time for me to do some sat comparison shots in my head. I see residential street and the tram so I'm trying to picture walking down what is now San Fran street and making that left turn toward the circle. LOL!

Ooooo k I get it now... there was a building built where the facade was. The building I see to the right of the circle is Sounds Dangerous and where Idol is now. Man it amazes me almost daily how much has changed at DHS. I've been so many times but you don't ever really "see it" until you see an arial view like that y'know? I've really gotta do a little studying and pick out the differences.

Google shows the building where the facade was as being the SciFi Dine-In... why do I not think that's right? Is it in the same spot as the Commissary and Muppets?

Nope your good..It's right where Sci-Fi Dine in & The ABC Commisary is..
Ok that's what I thought... I didn't realize how completely different that whole side of the park was. In my head all that changed was removing residential street and putting in the theater for LMA. MuppetVision is actually in the bottom right of that (big Kermit) and that whole area didn't even exist huh? Man this is definitely the one part that "Madam Extinct Disney" should do some more work on! LOL!!
