NextGen queue without lines

I'm really hoping the Dumbo queue is an early test for a concept that could work wonders for a popular E-ticket down the road.

Picture this: You enter an indoor, themed area, roughly the size of the downstairs area of The Land pavilion. You're either given a pager, or your estimated wait is shown on your smartphone. The waiting area has plenty of places so sit, a quick-service/snack counter, gift shop, interactive displays and of course wifi. So you can relax for an hour, rather than stand in a line, browse the web, grab a snack, drink and a souvenir, then be notified fifteen minutes before your ride to enter the short line.

This is essentially the concept of the new Dumbo line, but taken to the next level. Furthermore, it creates an opportunity for people to spend money while waiting for the attraction, one of Disney's biggest perceived benefits of FastPass.

I dunno. I wouldn't stand in line for an hour for a ride now, hence fastpass. Waiting with a fastpass for 5, 10, even 20 or 30 minutes is one thing, but hanging out in a themed mini-mall isn't my idea of fun.

It piques my curiousity. I have RA so it sounds appealing to me. I'd love to give it a try. Esp with smartphone technology. This would be cost efficient & much greener than fast passes i would think.

I personally don't like that idea because to me, waiting in a line in theme parks is part of the experience to me.
Completely agree, standing in line that is well themed is part of the experience, it can add a backstory to the ride and queueing allows excitement to build I think, walking straight onto a ride too often makes it slightly less exciting even if that does sound a bit wierd!

I like the idea of it especially with kids!! Cool off, get a bite to eat, and let kids loose in a safe environment! Standing in line for an hour with bored children can be challenging!

On Memeorial Day weekend my family and I experienced the Dumbo queue which is for stanby riders. I have to say I liked sitting in the AC and relaxing waiting for the ride while the kids played but...There is still a wait after your pager goes off. We still had to stand in line for about 10 to 15 minutes. If they could get a Fast Pass where there is no wait fantastic!

It is a simple fact that waiting is one of the worst necessary evils of a theme park. Since day one, Disney has worked to take the sting out of the wait by making it as interesting as possible. It started with themed queues where the story starts before you even get on the ride. While this concept could be classified as revolutionary at the time, it still has its limitations as it is still a line. You can only make this experience so enthralling. In come the interactive elements. This again is another plus by adding some kinetic elements that can break up the monotony, but there is a problem. Anything that stops you from moving forward (eg the games in Space Mountain) is viewed as a hindrance to the process of moving forward and getting toward the final destination.

I think @neoshinok is absolutely correct. We are seeing what could be the next evolution of the age old feeder line. The "line" will only exist in the computer system that tells you get on the attraction. You will be free to move around a space that can contain anything from games, interactive elements, museum like displays stores or what every you can think of.

Personally, I think this is a great idea and I can to wait to see how it evolves over the coming years.

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION!

Here is the flaw in this setup. When the ride breaks down you waited and now get nothing. When someone gets ill on the ride and they have to delay the ride, you may miss your alloted time, or someone later gets dropped. In a world where machines and people are perfect and have no flaws this will work. But until that time, it will fail.

How many times has test track broken? How many people have gotten sick on Mission to Mars?

Just get in the line, and enjoy the time with your friends and family, and if you are by yourself, get to know your new friends in the line with you.

Why would that situation be handled any different than it is now? This will not have some hard core "Get there one minute late and you loose your spot and go to the back of the line!" stipulation. There is a virtual line in the software. If the ride goes 101 or someone has a protein spill the wait simply gets a little longer like any other kind of line.

Your wait gets longer sitting in a mini mall. This mini mall is only for that one ride. At present you know when the ride breaks and can make the decision to leave. But under this new setup, it sounds like they could just not inform you and you sit around until the park closes. Sounds like someone from the DMV came up with this. You have been to a place that you walk in get your number and sit around waiting for you number to be called? It is not anymore efficient than the que line. After all you still have to stay in that mini mall, that has that one ride.

No thanks.

P.S. Also what happens when the software messes up. Software is not perfect either. Also hope your smart phone doesn't hose up. I know they don't often hose up, but they do.

They inform you now when a ride goes 101. Why would they do this any different? The system also does not use smart phones, it uses a restaurant style pager.

I was going off of neoshinoks "You're either given a pager, or your estimated wait is shown on your smartphone." statement. Hey as long as they keep the standby line, I am fine. To each their own. I remember when fastpass came out, it sounded like a great idea. But now what happens is people literally run to the fastpasses and suck the kiosks dry within on hour. I have seen this multiple times for the Toy Story ride. So people that cannot run and are not handicapped are deprived the "benefit" of the fastpass system.

With this setup, people are going to get in the "line" to get their pager. I wonder how long that "line" will get. Lets say you wait 10 minutes in this pager "line" only to find out that the wait is going to be 3 hours. Are you going to wait in the mini mall 3 hours? I guess they could put up signs like they do now that state how long the present wait is, but it still does not fix anything in my opinion.
