How much rain does it take?

How much rain does it take to effect the crowd level at a park? How long does it need to rain before people leave and is the lighter crowd temporary or does it have a noticeable effect the rest of the day and evening. What's your experience?

Almost any amount of rain will tend to clear a park. How long kind of depends on when it rains and for how long. A quick shower around 10:00 AM the crowds come back, 5:00 PM and they tend to stay gone. A solid day of rain will keep the crowds pretty light.

Is there a way to know which rides get shut down due to rain? If it starts raining while we are at a park it would be nice to know what our options are.

Most will stay open unless there is lightning. When you start seeing a good bit of lightning some of the outdoor attractions will close until it passes. They rarely stay closed for long unless it is an extreme storm.

Superbowl night + rain + fireworks = walk on EVERYTHING....

Pretty much any type of rain will reduce crowd levels. Obviously the worse the storm, the more people that clear. I love sitting in a room somewhere or under shelter and watching the calm come over the park.

What's this warm water.?

Hold on, Are you talking about this warm liquid that falls from the sky?On our first ever trip in 2004 we were walking towards the entrance of MK during this thunderstorm, and it was like a mass exodus leaving the park, apart from this Scottish family of three who were heading into the park dancing and singing and splashing in the rain,my son was only six then and asked " daddy, why is everyone leaving?" I just smiled and replied " The warm rain will melt them but were ok as were from Scotland.":sohappy:

Most people will hang in through a small sun shower.

But the summer thunderstorms that go on for hours will almost totally clear the parks.people begin leaving immediatly and the park is almost empty in about an hour.

I remember visting Magic Kingdom the weekend after the 40th Anniversary, and it was a rainy weekend, The park was open 9am - 12am, It was empty, though all entertainment was cancelled, I planned on staying until 12am to see how empty it was going to get, but the rain mixed with some chilly air kicked me out around 6pm (if only I had a jacket).

Rainy days in the parks tend to be interesting, theres always magic.

Outdoor entertainment, parades, fireworks, World Showcase things in Japan, Canada etc will also close depending on how bad the rain is - anything more than a sprinkle.

Also outdoor carts for food and merch may close down as well.

When its an absolute deluge and doesn't stop raining for a while, take my advice and stay away from Tomorrowland!

If you'd like to witness the formation of Lake Tomorrowland and be stuck huddled around the attraction entrances/exits with no way out other than tromping through a few inches of water for a while, you certainly can. I remember experiencing that, and...never again.

Wishes and ROE will run in heavy rain and storms, though Tink won't fly. ROE normally goes time no matter what (except the 25th anniversary of course!) and Wishes may hold until the worst has cleared but unless severely affected technically will still run. I witnessed the 10pm show run at midnight a few years back.

They used to shut Wishes down years ago a lot more frequently than they do now I think. I recall several times in 96-97 when I worked there that it would not show, or be delayed several hours with just a moderate rainfall.

I was very aware of the weather when I worked there. I was the one engraving names on the leather bracelets and keychains in Canada and as soon as we saw that wall of rain coming from China across the lagoon we would scramble to get the leather in and the tarps tied down.

It wasn't easy with all of the guests wanting to stay in our tent but we had to kick them out (some people get REALLY nasty about that) so we could protect the merchandise and the leather. We gave them options nearby to get out of the rain but you would have thought I just satanically sacrificed their first born - not ask them to move due to some rain.

I loved watching the lightening storms over the lagoon. After watching Illuminations every night for 2 years I found the lightening far more entertaining

That was Fantasy in the Sky, with respect. Wishes had mostly new infrastructure that is a lot more weather proof. I've witnessed the control system actually going down due to water damage minutes from show time and the fantastic efforts of the crew to get the show back up a few minutes late. If they can, it runs.
Again, with respect

And yes, it's funny watching 40,000 people oohing and ahhing at the sky when $20k worth of pyro is going off on the lagoon :D

I love it - I walk right out in it, and not with a silly poncho. :) I don't melt, and you can bounce from ride to ride with little wait. Some of the best times I have had in parks has been in inclement weather.

I was in MK when a thunderstorm popped up. They wouldn't let us on Splash Mt or Thunder MT Railroad. They said it wasn't because of the raidn though, but the lightning.

From my experience even a light rain seems to really clear people out of the parks. I prefer at least 2 brief rain showers a day when I'm in WDW...it cools it off and really does lighten the crowds. Also, 90% of every attraction in WDW still goes on with rain, there are very few outside specific attractions that would actually shut down for rain...However if it starts lightning they will shut down certain attractions (ToT, SM etc) even though the majority of the time they are based inside. But definitely don't fear the rain, I have gone during what might possibly have been the worst monsoon I have ever been a part of and we all still had a blast in the parks!
