Is the full marathon the only way to get a Mickey Medal? I want one SO bad, but don't think I'm quite ready for a full marathon.

I'm sure you can buy one from someone on ebay who needs to sell it for money or is downsizing their collection. However busy used medals kind of takes the specialness out of them and what they stand for.

If you want the bling you gotta earn it! ;)

You might be more ready for a marathon than you think. Check out Jeff Galloway's six month marathon training plan on the runDisney website.

The only respectable way is to earn it. You have plenty of time to train. Just in case you don’t know, the Mickey medal for the next marathon will be redesigned to commemorate the 20th anniversary so it won’t look like the ones from the previous 2 years.

The medal should be your inspiration to train!

I now have 5 RunDisney medals (going for #6 is Sept) and they hang in my bedroom so every morning I see them. It is a daily reminder of what I can do when I put my blood, sweat, and tears & every ounce of determination I have into something.
I can not fathom:
a) why someone would want to sell their medal
b)why someone would want to have something that they didn't earn.

Start training and earn it for yourself; then you'll understand the feeling of accomplishing something that makes you so proud. It's an amazing feeling.

I would never sell a medal either. I'm hoping to do the 1/2 marathon this year and the full in 2013! I am shooting for ToT but it looks like slots are filling up fast and I haven't been able to save the 100 bucks yet.

I think the Mickey Mile medals have Mickey on them. But they are rubber, not metal/alloy/whatever is hard and heavy.

I am amazed at the people that seem to run the race, and then sell everything they can online as soon as they get home. Judging by what some of the medals/shirts/stuff have gone for just after the race I almost think they sell it all to pay off the registration fees.

But yeah, its just not the same. Buying a spare to hang in your office or something? Thats cool. But buying them otherwise? Eh, not so sure.

Id NEVER sell my W&D medal. It is the best Ive ever earned. In 178 days, Im sure the ToT will be just as cool.

If it's anything like the one that I have with the moving elevator, it will be!

I have purchased one medal for myself - but not like someone suggested above. Last Fall when my son and I had our private side race in our local town's 5K, he beat me, as you all know and as I expected. Afterwards, I surprised him by commemorating the event with medals that I ordered for us - his was Gold with his time and the date engraved on the back, and mine was silver with my time and the date engraved on the back. Even though he beat me, I was still proud of my PR, and he was so excited to get his first medal. So yes I bought them, but we also earned them. :D

As for the OP, earn your Mickey medal or forgo it. Use it as inspiration to run that marathon when you're ready!

That's totally different. What a great idea, Jill.

And to the OP - I agree with everyone else here. I can't imagine ever buying medals off of eBay (or selling mine!)...not that you said you'd do that, but still.

I never thought I'd run a marathon, but I completed the WDW Full this year after lots of hard work. When training runs got hard, I pictured myself getting that medal and it really helped pull me through and made it that much more satisfying when I actually did get mine at the finish line. So don't rule out earning that Mickey Medal...you never know what you're capable of until you try.

I think there is a general understanding that you do not wear a t-shirt, sport a medal, sticker or any other race gear without finishing the race. You earn those things. To think that someone would display a medal they didn't earn and pass it off as their own is flat out bush-league.

Start out aiming for the Donald medal. Earning that will motivate you enough and give you the confidence to go for your Mickey medal. Keep in mind you earn the medal by finishing the race in a 16 minute per mile pace. That doesn't mean running the full 26.2 miles.

Earn it. If you're not willing to put in the miles and the hard work then you have no business having one. Coryna, Joel and ALL of us other regulars around here will agree. We bust our a--es.

While I do agree that earning one is better than simply buying one, I have to agree with the OP that having one would be neat. I am not talking about going around with it saying that I earned it or that I ran the race to get one. I would love to have one with Goofy on it. I have nearly 250 goofy memorabilia on shelves in my office and I'd like to have a Goofy marathon medal. IT wouldn't be so that I could could say that I did something that I hadn't/ Heck, I'd tell anyone that asked "Yep. I bought that." I have much respect for anyone that can complete these marathons. I'm not one of them. But I wouldn't turn down having another piece of Goofy on my shelves.

I hope that we runners haven't come off as a bunch of self-righteous a-holes in this thread because that was not our intent. You just touched a nerve when you suggested buying medals that we have worked our b*tts off to earn. I do understand what you are saying about wanting the medal for your collection and not trying to take credit for having earned it. But the OP made it sound like she was "not ready for a full marathon" which implied that she was a runner who wanted the medal without running this particular race. That is why we all got our hackles up. If she is,in fact, a runner, I stand by my suggestion that she use her desire for the Mickey medal as motivation to eventually train for a marathon. If, however, she is like you and simply wants the medal to display as part of an all-inclusive Mickey collection and doesn't plan to say she ran the race to earn it, then I stand down in my judgment. Friends?

You didn't upset me. :D I was just pointing out that there may have been another reason for wanting the medal. I totally 100% agree with you that if a person did not run the marathon that they should not want the medal to falsely display it. I've always been retiscent about buying things like this (including cast member pins) because even though it would have been for a collection, it just wouldn't have felt right.

NO! NO! NO! I'm afraid you all misunderstood my intentions when I started this thread!! I would NEVER consider buying a medal someone else earned!! Earning it is the only way I would ever want one of my own!! I simply wanted to know if they have medals for the 1/2 marathon finishers or if it's only for the full marathon runners. I had extensive back surgery 5 years ago and was told by my surgeon that I should never do any kind of running for exercise - only walking. Well, I have walked in several 5K's and, with the blessing of my new doctor, am starting to incorporate some light jogging into my routine. I don't know that my back could ever withstand a full marathon, but I do see that I would be able to jog/walk a 1/2 marathon at an avg. pace of under 15 min/mile, which I understand is the pace I would need to keep in order to qualify. The promise of a Mickey medal sure is a wonderful incentive!!
