Did you hear? We’re looking for military heroes to join the team. Disney President and CEO Bob Iger just announced a new company-wide initiative to hire, train and support returning veterans called Heroes Work Here. It’s exciting news and we’ve got the details. Disney will:

Provide at least 1,000 jobs, career opportunities for returning U.S. veterans over the next three years.

Support military families, veterans transitioning into civilian life.

Launch a national public awareness campaign to encourage job opportunities for veterans.

So, what job opportunities are we talking about? They’ll run the gamut from internships to leadership roles and span all segments of The Walt Disney Company. To support this effort, the company will host career fairs and participate in events showcasing job opportunities for returning military personnel.

Disney will also invest in select non-profit organizations that provide training and other support services for veterans, while Disney VoluntEARS will lend their time and talents to the effort through service projects with veterans’ organizations across the country.

Also, be sure and keep an eye out for some of the talented veterans already employed at Disney in TV spots to encourage other companies to create opportunities for returning military personnel. To learn more about Heroes Work Here, visit the Disney Careers website.

I am currently serving and am a career man. I know a lot of guys that come home from Iraq/Afghanistan/other and have a lot of trouble finding good jobs. I know these men and women will be most appreciative for an opportunity to work at Disney. It might make for a little bit different outcome in some situations. For example the drunk guy at the Tower of Terror in California, though; a former Marine or Army Infantry security guard might have handled it (ahem) differently :ROFLOL:

Maybe we'll finally see some crackdowns on guest behavior. :lookaroun

This is fantastic news. As a veteran myself I applaud Disney for giving back to our nations heroes.

If you see a veteran at the parks working, please tell them thank you, it goes a long way.

OK, I'm thrilled if/when veterans find work - the percentage of homeless/jobless vets in this country is a tragedy. But let's not bend over backwards to thank Disney; one of the reasons they took this initiative is because earlier this year a bill was signed into law that gives tax incentives to companies that hire jobless vets.

And before anyone screams that I'm injecting politics into this conversation, please let me point out two things:

1: This was one of the few significant pieces of legislation in the past 4 years that enjoyed widespread bipartisan support. It was one of the few things both parties could get behind.

2: I only bring it up to essentially say: As much as I love WDW, I think it's disingenuous for Disney to press release this initiative of hiring vets like it was their idea, when, were it not for the tax incentive, they might not have been doing it at all. To do what many of us would consider "the right thing" by our vets, Uncle Sam had to first show the Mouse the money.

God Bless our Vets and all those serving in our military!

It benefits everyone all around. I think it's a great thing.

Knowing what Disney pays, will disney jump the pay scale?

Probably not for the lower level jobs but I know some of my friends who are already out and home would love to just have a job that has a halfway decent pay anywhere. It is like my grandma always says at least A job is better than No job.

I hope that the 1000 jobs aren't just park low level jobs but that they pull these guys/gals into management positions and maybe even into office jobs and such.

Since the 1000 jobs will be created and/or filled over three years, what I worry about is that quite a few vets will be placed in jobs that tend to high turnover rates in the first place, then if those vets quit or are fired, they will be replaced with other vets, yet Disney will still claim to have met their quota of giving jobs to 1000 vets over three years, getting maximum P.R. buzz, and perhaps maximizing the tax incentives with employees that got caught in the "churn."

I didn't even think about how they might twist it that way.

Although the vets may not get canned just to be replaced with new ones I think you are pointing something important out that it does not say 1000 at a time it just says over 3 years. They could easily fill 500 positions with 1000 people over the span of 3 years. Heck they could potentially fill 250 positions with 1000 people over 3 years if they follow what seems to be the underlying goal of this. I know it is a tax ride off for Disney but it also appears they may actually care because they are donating money to organizations that provide job training to vets.

I'm not going to second-guess their motives (any more than I already have) but I'd bet a dollar that the money they're donating is ALSO a tax write-off.

I was sort of confused by the whole thing but your explanation makes some sense. They say they are hiring veterans, but the information beyond that is very vague. When you go look at the site, it just has a link to all the regular job postings within the company that any veteran could have applied for before or after this initiative. Am I missing something?

Vet Jobs

HHHAAA...I'm one of those "grandmothers" that use to say "a job is better then no jobs" but now-a-days most companies know this and with the hugh group of unemployed to pick from this "old" saying should be revised as we all know Disney & other companies employees have more then 1 job for their essentials and that does not include medical. Love our Vets.
