As a matter of fact, they were filming something there within the last 2 days.... I don't know what, but I saw some pictures posted in someone's trip report...

They use the soundstages for filming rather often, actually, it's just not publicized (and not typically viewable by the public). I remember they did Family Feud, some "Guts" show for Nickelodeon, something for Final Destination 5... all in the past couple years, and I'm sure there's much more we don't know about. But those soundstages are in fairly constant use. What you don't see much more anymore (and hence the complaints I'm guessing) is filming on the street sets... you can thank Rockit and more intrusive attractions facades for that, I guess.

The filming was actually on one of the side streets using the facades... I don't recall which facades were being used though...

They have a couple of television shows that tape on a regular basis. Multiple direct-to-video films have been filmed in and around the park over the past few years. And quite a few production companies have a home there. Heckuva lot more going on at USF than that other "studios" place down I-4...

Isn't the excuse that people love to give for the reason DHS no longer has actually real filming is because no one wants to film in central Florida???

If that is the case, then how does Universal still manage to be a working studio??

DHS was used in the 90's for the remake of the Mickey Mouse Club wasn't it? I would think they could have at least kept some more animation at DHS to at least make it a true studio. The backlot tour is now obsolete because it isn't a working studio any more.

I have never been to Universal but I have to say that theming is an important aspect to them being called studios. At least at DHS they have the characters who walk around the park as if you had walked onto an old movie lot in the middle of filming. I don't know if Universal does anything similar but at least having those characters makes it a little more like a classic studio then nothing.

I really think the term 'working studio' should be used very lightly.

What should we call it? "The working studio that we aren't supposed to call a working studio because AswaySuller doesn't want us to?" Would it not be more simple to just call a duck a duck?

You answered your own question. It's just an excuse. There's nothing stopping them from pursuing production.

The fact that they are always trying to book studio usage is enough to call it a fully working studio. It doesn’t need a full time TV series to make it a full time studio. Any company looking to film can call Universal and request a stage. That is a full working studio. No studio outside Hollywood is always 100 percent booked.

So if you need a soundstage at Universal Fl here are the prices: http://studio.florida.universalstudios.com/rates.php

You can NOT book anything at DHS as it's just a theme park, the theme being a studio. So they call it a studio. Now you can request permission to film in the park and such. But you can also do that at your local mall.

I think the reason visitors (myself included) take the working studios title with a pinch of salt is that seeing something filmed there, or being aware of it is rare (bar the wrestling).

The filming that goes on is kind if behind closed doors, ie no real backlot etc...
They don't really shout about filming there
For reasons unknown to me.

For example in Hollywood even in the closed sounds stages they tell you or at least drop huge hints as to what's being filmed there.

And because there's no real backlot as such there's nothing really recognisable from films, ie the courthouse square in Hollywood, wisteria lane, psycho house et all....

I take back what I say about it being used as a real studios.... But i think people's (certainly my) expectations were of proper Hollywood hits and first class tv shows regularly being shot there and that being visibly seen.... Like Hollywood , rather than disappointing cable tv and the odd music video.

USF's backlot is the park itself, which can be very recognizable in media if you're familiar with it.

Unfortunately they have made a comeback this year....

I also remember recognising USF in a straight to video movie of Action Man (the British equivioant of GI Joe) staring Mark Griffin aka Trojan from Gladiators!

Creed..... Decent....? um each to their own I guess....

My point is the only thing I've recognised USF in is dodgy music videos and straight to VHS movies....

Unless you count house on haunted hill as it uses IOA.... Which I don't!
