D23 model and CGI flythroughs

Thanks Steve for all the posts about the D23 meeting!

In this mine ride simulation video it looks like the cars may be going pretty fast through those curves, because of the angle of the riders. Maybe it will be a more thrilling ride similar to Big Thunder Mountain, than the impression I was getting before?

With these new angles on the model, one detail I'm very impressed with is the manner they came up with to hide the back part of the Little Mermaid building from being visible down the access road between LM and the tents: An outcropping that goes across the roadway, but still allows vehicular access underneath.

From the time the models and plans came out, I'd been worried about that one particular angle. I'm glad WDI thought of it, and they didn't end up with a situation like at IOA where you have a great themed exterior that eventually runs into a plain, unthemed warehouse building visible from some angles (examples: Potter's castle and Poseidon's Fury)

The thing from the model that concerns me is the casey jr area. In previous pictures we saw a nicely themed water play area. In the model it looks like a circus train without any play aspect.

Items as minuscule as that I can see as something that still has rendering to do. Better to make something and present it then exceed expectations when the final product is released.

EXACTLY! I noticed the same thing. I really think we are seeing immersion take another evolutionary step with adds like this and I am hoping they add similar treatments to the former skyway area. Tomorrowland could also use these kinds of details. It seems a very inexpensive way to add so much depth.

did anyone else think it's strange they didn't zoom in or linger on mermaid or BatB? they just flew straight to the least exciting part of the expansion..

Yes, and I also was thinking some people need to have their camcorders taken away. Terrible. But I have seen a video or two that is very encouraging. Lee is right, the model should go to WDW ASAP! :)

(Then send in Merf to take photos):zipit: :lookaroun

The view that I'm worried about is when looking from inside storybook circus towards LM. There doesn't appear to be any theming on that side of the building and the tents aren't tall enough to totally obscure it.

There will be trees there, I'm guessing.
I'm sure Disney thought it through and they will hide that part of the building somehow.

(Let's just hope they don't paint it blue with clouds like over at DHS :hurl:)

Trees was my guess as well tall enough to hide the building and not ruin the Forced Perspective

Looking at the model I think the only time that will be an issue is when you are on Dumbo or the GG. At ground level the tents should be plenty tall enough to obscure the view.

Also be assured that they have a CGI model of the area and they have studied it for sight lines. That is probably why the new model has the extension of the Little Mermaid rock work across the access road.

Yes it is and I hope TDO realized it and cancelled it.

Can you explain why a water play area is stupid?

Donald's Boat was a huge hit in the old TT. It gave kids a place to run around, blow off a little energy, and cool down at the same time. Heck, some days I took a little walk through myself just to get sprayed. And Donald's Boat was themed pretty well for a water play area. If you ever went inside, there was the cutest map on the inside of the boat.

I don't understand why anyone say a water play area (especially in an area dedicated to younger children) is stupid?

Only a parent would understand the need for it....

Based on the video of this model, it seems as though the castle wall perimeter separates the old fantasy land (Pooh, Peter Pan, Mikey's Philharmagic) from the new fantasy land. Is this the case? If so, it seems to me that this would create a traffic nightmare from people trying to get from one of the existing rides to the new section. Does anyone have any insight on this?

It looks to me like the walls would pose no more of an obstacle than a planter or the dumbo attraction. It will direct flow, but should not be a significant bottle neck.

I just got back from the D23 Expo this evening, after spending a few hours over there in Anaheim this afternoon. I posted the following info below in another D23 thread here, but have realized this specific information I learned at the New Fantasyland model might be of interest to folks here. So I'll just cut and paste what I posted elsewhere...

Overall, a busy but fun afternoon roaming the exhibit halls of the D23 Expo! Special thanks needs to go to all the warm and chatty Imagineers staffing the Parks & Resorts Pavilion. They are just so proud of their work (and rightly so), and it's so nice to be able to speak with these creative folks who are working on all of these big things coming to Disney theme parks around the world!

For instance, when I was studying the HUGE New Fantasyland model a very nice young lady Imagineer came up to me and asked if I'd like a New Fantasyland postcard, which was oversized on heavy cardstock, and I was thrilled to receive. I asked "So, when does this open?", and she then proceeded to walk me from one side of the model to the other explaining the "phasing" (her words) of the project and how certain things like Little Mermaid would be opening first around "Thanksgiving of 2012", and then on through the final opening of the Seven Dwarves Mine Train that she said would be opening in "early spring of 2014". So there you go, right from the Imagineers mouth!

What a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon. :sohappy:
