"The Magic Kingdom" movie?

I didn't realize this project was a go, much less that they were confirmed to be shooting at the parks.

Is it for sure they'll be shooting at MK? From what I remember hearing about the project, it sounded more like a DL setting. Lot closer to Hollywood, too.

From an interview with Jon Favreau:

“[The story for Magic Kingdom] is essentially a family caught in Disneyland, bringing all of the attractions to life. I really want to plumb the depths of the history of the park because it’s a place I love to go a few times a year.”

OK - so there's the obvious plot inconsistency right off the bat.

Full interview here (doesn't say anything about filming but still a mildly interesting read):

I haven't read the books, but isn't that the basic premise of Kingdom Keepers?

That's not plot inconsitency because Disneyland is commonly referred to as "Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom". Even in the park you can here announcements saying "thank you for visiting the Magic Kingdom". Also, it is a magic kingdom, so the name refers to the description of the setting as well, especially if the attractions are going to be "magically" coming to life.

I did not know that - I never had the pleasure of visiting DL. I stand corrected - thanks!!

Yes it is... with exception of Middle Schoolers that are "DHIs" and cross over into a very evil Magic Kingdom to stop all the evil being done by the "Overtakers".

I heard that the 4th book coming out is about them crossing over into Harry's Potterville and setting the overtakers loose to roam. ROFL :ROFLOL::goodnevil:ROFLOL:

I doubt they'll actually shoot much at the parks, if at all.

Until they start principal photography, this movie isn't a go at all. Anything can happen to stop it prior to then (and even after then).

Thank you. So many East Coasters don't realize that.

The phrase "Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom" dates back to the earliest Disneyland advertising and PR for the park from 1955-56, found in all ads and press releases and on official Disneyland Attraction Posters.

In 2011, Disneyland is still referred to as "Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom" or sometimes "the magic kingdom of Disneyland" on signage, recorded announcements and live Cast Member spiels. It is, after all, Walt's personal theme park he built out of love. His name is still everywhere at Disneyland, on plaques, attraction signs, Cast Member announcements, etc. Disneyland is his magic kingdom.

When they were planning Walt Disney World in the late 1960's after Walt's death, they realized that they couldn't call the theme park there "Disneyland" again, so they chose to copy Disneyland's popular tagline by giving the Florida park the title The Magic Kingdom Park. Before Walt died in 1966, the only thing he referred to the Florida park as was "theme amusement park" or just "amusement park" in his Florida Project discussions of 1965-66. The phrase "theme park" was just barely entering the lexicon in the mid 60's.

A movie about the "Magic Kingdom" will be a movie based in Southern California, set in Disneyland.

Exactly...where?

I know the phrase had been used prior, but I went to Disneyland last year and intentionally looked for these references people claim, but I could not find anything where they refer to it as "Magic Kingdom" on any new material.

Disney is extremely careful about branding with the park names, and I would be surprised if they allowed the phrase to still be used as it creates obvious confusion between Disneyland and "Magic Kingdom Park".

Disney refers in-house to all of the main parks based on the Disneyland structure as "Magic Kingdom Parks"

And while the basic idea is the same (things coming to life at night) this will be nothing like the Kingdom Keeper books. The KK Books could work with a LOT of tweaking (Disney refused to make a movie a few years back because they disliked the idea of giving so many secrests (like the utilidors) away on screen) and I am sure that Jon Faverau and his team working on "Magic Kingdom" will be far better researched than Ridley Pearson.

I mean, the guy has gotten countless free tours with Imagineers, and still gets tons of stuff wrong, basic things like attraction names are totally screwed up. The books are made based on concept alone, which means no one proof reads them and says "Give that a few more drafts"

That may very well be, I'm not a CM so I wouldn't know. What I do know is that I have had a very hard time finding it referred to in modern materials which guests would see/have access to. I think once I heard a CM say something about "Walt's MAGICAL kingdom", but I cannot find where Disney calls Disneyland "Magic Kingdom" anywhere.

^ I think I heard one or two "Walt's Magic Kingdom" references in 2009, but I couldn't begin to tell you in what context.

Heres one, the Disneyland Railroad announcements

It's also mentioned a once or twice in Remember...Dreams Come True, from Julie Andrews and the DLRR announcement is in it too.

Found another one, the "rope drop" announcement at :20 seconds

The real question is should MK movie become sucessful what kind of tie-ins can we expect in the park? Although I think its extremly unlikely the movie will do well financially.

Great verbal examples here from nemofinder22...

You'll also hear the "enjoy your day in Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom" or some such use of the phrase from Cast Member spiels on the Mark Twain Riverboat, and the Disneyland Railroad, in addition to the random queue announcements or PA announcements. I've recently heard it during live queue announcements about folding strollers before boarding the bus back to the Toy Story parking lot, as the usual "we hope you've enjoyed your visit with us here at Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom, and that you have a safe journey home". It depends on the Cast Member though, sometimes they just say "Disneyland" or "Disneyland Resort". Your mileage may vary.

It's also still on the big foldout park maps for sale in most Disneyland gift shops, in the bottom right corner of the map. It disappeared for awhile on maps in the 1990's, but around the 50th the maps came back with that tagline in the title.

You also find his name on some attraction signage, like at the Tiki Room. But that's more to do with the fact that Walt like to see his name on the marquee's.

But for the most part, they use the approved Disneyland Resort script and logo, without mention of the "magic kingdom" in the title. Like this big marketing gimmick thing that showed up last week in front of the DCA main entrance construction walls...

sounds like the movie "night at the museum" or Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
