TSA and carry-on

TSA is never consistent so it's hard to say. I travel with a printer and was only asked once last year to remove it (the printer, not the ink) during security check. Some airports do and some don't. The time I was asked to remove it, they just swabbed it and I was on my way. None of the time did they ask me to remove the ink cartridge.

I recently flew from LaGuardia to Hartsfield on New Year's Eve (yes, I was trying to get out of Dodge before the madness descended on NYC). In my carry-on I had my iPad, my jacket, and half a 1-liter bottle of ginger ale. All three made it through screening with no problems.

I am very surprised they let that through. I had half a Dasani bottle from MK in my carry-on and the TSA agent at MCO pulled it out, gave me a scathing look, and threw it in the bin under the table. I felt like a small child that was just scolded.

Same happened to me leaving Providence heading to Orlando. We left for the airport straight from work, and I had 1/2 a bottle of OJ in my carryon bag that I completely forgot about. But TSA wouldn't take it out, I had to remove it in front of them, which is understandable. But I would rather be in trouble for having a 1/2 empty bottle of OJ than them not caring at all.

Ink cartridges that are inside your printer are not going to be a problem, but they will run your bag twice through security.

Extra ink also should not be a problem if it is sealed. I would handle it the same way I do other liquids -- provided they are 3 oz or less, put them in a plastic gallon bag like you do all other liquid items. If they contain more than 3 oz of ink, they can NOT be carried on no matter what stories you hear from other people that snuck things on that weren't caught.

In reality -- I would never take extra inks in my carry on. I'd put them in my checked baggage.

The only time I've been caught with liquids I refused to hand it over and chugged it in front of them.

It's a ridiculous rule.

Well, all I can say in defense of TSA is that there was a good deal of pressure to move people out of LGA in wake of the snowstorm. The flip side being all of those trying to get to NYC through LGA for the New Year's Eve celebrations. So who knows.....
