Who is Duffy? And what does he have to do with Disney? Was he in any movies, books, etc.?
Nothing says human innovation, progress, and world culture quite like Duffy, the Disney Bear.

Could there be a worse place for this??
I read the initial post to be that they were setting it up over by the Millenium Village building. Which was kinda out of the way. But having actually seen where they put it, how the heck are they gonna handle that line? (If there is one) And where will Duffy go for coffee breaks? I don't really think there is anywhere other than Odyssey nearby where he can get a good rest. It does seem like a very odd location.

I have nothing against Duffy.
Well, maybe I do, but that's beside the point.
The point is, a stuffed cuddly bear has NOTHING TO DO WITH EPCOT.
Fantasyland? Toontown? Main Street? Go nuts.
Heck, even Animal Kingdom. He's a bear.
But World Showcase? :hurl:
it's been well established that the back story for this bear is that he travels the world. Which, seems to fit in just fine with World Showcase.
Oh it has has it? Well then why haven't I ever heard of this Bear and his "backstory" if its so "well established." Sounds like the marketing geniuses at Disney added the "travels the world" garbage so they could add some random character meet and greet in World Showcase to satisfy the childrens. Just my two cents though!
Seriously, I can sorta see why some folks have this hate thing going on for the concept of Duffy. But let's think this thru:
1. Duffy is not based on any of the "classic" stories. Nope. He sure isn't. All "characters" start somewhere. There are plenty of characters that aren't the Fab 5. They didn't all appear out of thin air as adored friends. At some point we all had to get to know each of them. Golly, I hope the Duffy-haters don't meet new people and hate 'em before they've gotten to know them at least a little. That would be just awful! And tragic!
2. Duffy doesn't have a long history that long-time fans can really connect with. Again, all characters were introduced at some point. They came along in a cartoon, a movie, a book, an attraction (ie. Figment!), etc. Just because Duffy's story isn't one from back in the day or doesn't have some deep-seated secret meaning doesn't make him garbage. Did you hate Figment from day 1? And seriously, if Walt and company had stopped thinking up new stories and ideas after their first handful of successes think of all the wonderful stories, characters, attractions, etc. we WOULDN'T have today.
Having Duffy poised to "travel" around the world, however, makes perfect sense to me.It fits his story. Perhaps I spent too much time hanging around with the Dreamfinder and Figment when I was a kid (prior to the first raping of the awesomeness, of course). Using my imagination became a way of life...
Other greats have lived by their imaginations and we're all the better for it. Keep that in mind, y'all.
Those who still can't open their minds & hearts to Duffy should use their imaginations to consider his possibilities for others. Children will be able to connect to him (because they aren't biased enough to automatically hate him). Duffy & Little Johnny will be able to "travel" around the "world" together seeking out adventure in each "land". They'll be able to get their passport stamped, take pictures, look for special things to collect in each country, and make memories together. Duffy creates opportunity for interest and learning about each country in World Showcase. Think of his possibilities if incorporated into the other parks! If nothing else, Duffy encourages kids to use their imaginations and engage in a little make-believe. Give that some thought. Kids these days don't have to go outside and create their own pretend stories & games like we did.
Yes, Disney is poised to make a buck or two off the selling of merchandise & trinkets specifically for Duffy. Guess what? That's what big companies do! They create stuff to spark interest then use that interest to make some money. It's a win/win, really. Disney's gonna make some money that will hopefully bring about more of the TLC we all would love to see lavished more upon our happy place.
I just don't see why all the hating. Why not give something a chance? What does it hurt?
I *heart* Duffy!
Damn, better get Pooh and friends out of England then.
And before you reply with "but Pooh is English!!" it's been well established that the back story for this bear is that he travels the world. Which, seems to fit in just fine with World Showcase.
I guess we'll just have to leave it as some people like it, some people don't. We'll see how long he lasts--he'll either be a flash in the pan, or an enduring part of the Epcot landscape.
I "sorta" get how he could make Epcot more "kid friendly" in the same way that Kim Possible was added. Loved Kim Possible when I was there last time.
