RFID for Little Mermaid and more

I work for an RFID company and we recently had a conversation about our internal product launches and the FLE and Magic Kingdom were discussed. Disney will be officially announcing where our technology will be located (what rides) after Labor Day weekend. From what I have heard there will be a test ride that is already running used for a proof of concept (pooh seems to be the target) and it will ultimately land in Little Mermaid for launch. If all goes well i get to be involved in the design and deployment of the system. I will update as I know more. I don't forsee the POC being ready until late this year, early next year and the LM ride won't happen until we get signoff on the technology, plus the building is a sand pit with footings now.

Cool. Keep us informed, but don't get yourself in trouble.

So what exactly is this RFID tech supposed to do as I wait in line?

Full body scan to determine if you are physically able to ride and handle being under water for 5 minutes. :ROFLOL:

Seriously though, I didn't see where he said anything about it being used for the line.

I imagine the test ride might actually be the DCA Mermaid, as they're further along in the construction.

The original poster mentioned that the Mermaid attraction is now a sandpit with footings. And if you look at the most recent aerial photograph of the FLE, it proves this.

It's most likely being spread throughout DLR & WDW. As OP said, he believes it could be MAWP. It seems as if they plan on incorporating RFID into numerous attractions....don't overdue it in the world TDO (but you know they will)

On projects where the same attraction is built in more than one place, the smart thing to do is try and get the same supplier for all of them. Brings down cost, and it prevents problems with incompatible systems. In theory, once the bugs have been worked out in the first installation, the work is cloned to the ohter(s).

Are rides going to be the only area disney incorporates this tech into the world or will they use it for other things such as merchandise and marketing purposes?

I don't know that anybody outside of TDO and the special projects group known as "Next Generation", really knows how or where it will be use, yet. Although, there's been lots of speculation.

Thanks i was just curious cause i know in some of my marketing classes we have talked about this tech and i end up being the only other person other then my teahcer whos knows anything about it. But with this the business and demographic possiblities are endless, they would almost essentially be able to track all of your movements. Kind of big brother like if ya ask me.

Yeah, there's been some discussion in that light, but the problem would be getting guests to wear something that will allow them to do this. Personally, I don't see the problem with it as I see it as possibly enhancing my experience, but the privacy advocates dont see it quite the same way.

from what i understand, you dont really have to wear anything. it could be as simple as a key in your pocket and it can be detected

i wonder if theyll be using it like they do at the ET attraction in universal. where he says your name at the end. maybe theyre thinking of adding more personal touches to rides  just throwin stuff out there now.

It could be anything from a card to a key or even a Jewel (in the Little Mermaid's case) that you are given which contains the ID. A guest could place that in to a socket on their ride vehicle.

So wait.

Let's say that your just walking by some animatronic and you have an RFID key or card whatever, and that animatronic is able to read that RFID key and reacts to it by interacting with you in some way?

I don't understand how they will incorporate this into the Winnie the Pooh ride. I mean I don't want them to randomly say my name or anything. To me, it just wouldn't work well. Now something like individual effects for each ride that get activated by certain RFID keys then that would be something cool and a step closer to Tokyo Disneyland's "Pooh's Hunny Hunt" attraction which is the crown jewel of Tokyo Disneyland's Fantasyland and arguably the entire park.

I for one have nothing against this great attraction. I cannot wait to see it when completely rethemed for the Fantasyland Forest project, and here's to hoping that they will eventually fix up the actual ride and even improve it to be like Tokyo's.

What I don't know is the level of detail it will be used in the rides. We create the hardware, design the system, and send out the data. Disney will have their own software to decipher the data and use it how they want. The ability to track outside of the rides will not be available as there are design limitations.
