Vacation reservation change quesiton

A friend just made a vacation package (room, tickets, and dining package) reservation (arriving March 7th) yesterday , and just realized that they were put in a preferred room rather than a standard room at Pop Century. They called to try and change it to a standard room which would save about $200 and were told that the cost to do the change would be more than what they would save. I called and was told it would only cost $50 for them to make the change. Anyone out there know which will be the real outcome? Any help/advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it is most likely due to the fact that it is less then a week out till arrival and making a change within that time frame would cost extra. So it very well could cost them more then what they would have saved staying in a standard at this point.

I also thought that it might be due to the fact that the arrival date is so close, but when I called I told the reservation person I talked to that they were arriving March 7th and she still said it would only be a $50 charge for the change. I told my friend to try calling again and am just waiting to hear the results...who knows, maybe the third time's the charm. haha! Thanks for your input!

We just booked today for an upcoming trip March 27-April 3 at Pop. Basically we were told any changes done right away (unless we upgrade to mod/delx) would be a $50, the closer it gets to the trip the higher the charge. I think within the one week time frame it was going to be $200.

I was surprised to get a passholder rate the week before Easter at such short notice. Now I am waiting on the summer trip. We have it booked for Yacht Club in July with the 40% but hope to get Passholder rate to add dining on without having to buy one day base tickets for each person in the room.

Let us know how it turns out.

If your friend booked under one of the specials, there may not have been any standard rooms available at the time of booking using that special offer and the reservation agent booked them in a preferred room so they could get the discount or gift card. There may have been standard rooms available, but not under the special offer. If that were the case, the change would cost the $50 change fee, as well as the increase in price from a discounted preferred room to a rack rate standard room (or loss of gift card depending on the offer your friend booked under) - which would not make it cost effective to change. I hope this makes sense. :)

Do you mean adding free dining to the passholder rate? I've wondered about that, is there any way a passholder would ever receive free dining without buying one day base tickets for everyone?

No. Passholders must buy a ticket to get FREE dining, and pay rack rate (full price) for the room portion of the package.

For our family, it works out much better for us to use the AP room discount and then pay to add the DDP. Saves us much more. And no ticket purchase is required when booking a passholder + dine package.

And in case someone is wondering, no you can not get both the AP room discount and free dining. Like all promotions, it is one or the other.

Thanks Mousefan. We didn't get the free dining. We opted to go with the room discount. Every time I called before I was told there were no discounts available because it was a black out week. We are going March 27- April 3. We are going in July at Yacht Club and were debating AP's or no AP's and if we could get a good rate in the spring we would go with the AP's. Well, finally we got a good rate for that week in March and were able to pay for the dining getting the room discount. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

That's great! Congrats on getting the room discount. The spring deluxe AP rates are great: we're saving 45% on our GF ressie in April. Easter week was initially blacked out when AP rates were first released on Jan. 1, but in recent weeks the blackout was lifted. Glad you scored a good deal. :)

To update on my original post/question, my friends were able to make the change from preferred room to standard room with no extra charge/fee last yesterday. They explained to the CM that they had not requested a preferred room and didn't realize it until after making the initial reservations. The CM was very nice and made the change for them with no problems. Gotta love Disney!

Now if only Saturday would get here quickly so I can head down!!!

Change fee? I always thought that you could cancel your trip up to 45 days before arrival with no penalty? Maybe I've been mislead all these years (fortunately have never had to cancel a trip), but if you can cancel for free, why have a change fee? Do they waive the fee if you upgrade to something more expensive? One trip I was hoping to book Pop as a placeholder and upgrade to a deluxe once the AP rates are released, but I would have to think twice about it if I need to pay a change fee...

Our e mail for the whole company has been flaky lately and was down in the last few days. I got a message to her however and I know she will be in the office later today. Hope this helps!! Marie

If you are inside of 45 days you can be subject to a change fee. Out side of it you are not. If you are upgrading that fee is typically waived.
