"Resort Room Advice" or "to Poly, or not to Poly"

I know people have looked for similar advice before but i didnt want to thread hijack or anything so here goes...

I am going to WDW the week before thanksgiving with my family but for 1 night/day my wife and i are on our own. We arent going to the parks that day. I was planning on surprising my wife with a night at the Polynesian resort concierge level, but having looked at the pricing online, that seems way more than we can afford. The polynesian is where we got engaged 3 years ago, we got married back in early january (so its kind of like a 1 year anniversary thing) and we found out this week that we are going to have a baby. i bring all this up because ive heard that sometimes the poly will give you a free upgrade if you are there for something special. i know you can never count on that and i always feel weird just telling people stuff in the hopes of getting something essentially free out of it.

do people think its worth it? or should i try another nice resort that is perhaps a little cheaper? any definite way i could get a good deal? what would YOU do?

Question, does your stay at the Polynesian have to be concierge? A garden view room will be less money and just as nice. Save concierge level for another time.
If the garden view room is still too much try the Wilderness Lodge or one of the moderate resorts. Coronado Springs and Port Orleans, both French Quarter and Riverside are very nice resorts Use the money you save for a meal in either at Ohanna, a signature dining restaurant or room service.
For our first anniversary we purchased our first house, we had no spare money so got pizza celebrated together in our new home. Being together is what mattered.

My best advice is to book what you can afford, and to not even think about the possibility of an upgrade. It's highly unlikely you'll get one, which means if you really hope for one you'll just be setting yourself up for disappointment. That's my best advice.

Maybe a little perspective will help. WDW has roughly (and don't quote me on this number) 27,000 hotel rooms. That's a lot of people ... surely many of them are celebrating something special. And on top of that, Disney's big theme this year is "What are you celebrating?" ... they're actually asking us what occasion we are celebrating before we even arrive!!! In other words, they are awash in special occasions, and even if they wanted to upgrade people, they wouldn't be able to upgrade everyone.

maybe call a travel agent and see what kind of deals they can get you on the room, or do you have AAA? also, do you have to have concierge? you could try to get the most basic cheapest room they have if it's really important to you and throw in there when you're booking that your wife is prego and you're celebrating your annv....you never know you could get an upgrade, just prepare yourself if you don't...and if you don't want to take a chance on it you could look into animal kingdom lodge..it's a little cheaper and it's a beautiful and romantic hotel. it even reminded us of the poly a little bit.

And a HUGE CONGRATS ON THE BABY NEWS!!!

I say you should do it! If you can't afford the concierge level, just book whatever room type you could. We stayed there over our anniversary and was 5 month pregnant. It was so wonderful and relaxing! Anniversary's and baby's should be celebrated! Who knows when you'll be able to get back after you have a baby or when you'll have time to yourself or to spend as a couple again. Enjoy yourself! You won't forget this trip! Just have it noted on your reservation that you'll be celebrating your anniversary and get the anniversary buttons. Don't count on an upgrade, but you may get surprised!
