Just back from Disney/Universal

3 nights at Royal Pacific, 13 nights at Wilderness Lodge Club Level
Myself, my wife, and our 3 boys (2, 2 and 8)

2 days before we left, the siatic nerves in my back and legs started acting up. I was in a load of pain. There was no way I was going to be able to hold one of our twins in hour long lines, and I knew it. My step-son has an anxiety disorder, so we've been told to get a Guest Assistance Card. I've never done it, as we didn't feel he really needed it. He was always fine without it. But this time, given my shape, I said screw it - Let's do it. More to come later....

Universal was up first for 3 nights. Royal Pacific was awesome. They treat you like first class all the way (Disney could learn a thing or 2), and the parks were fun, clean, and incredibly well-kept. Only bad part about Universal is the quick service food. It sucks and the service is slow as molasses. Other than that, Universal was awesome!

Now, we're off to Disney and Club Level at Wilderness Lodge. Let me talk about that joke for just a minute. We got there around 10:00AM, so our room wasn't ready yet. We just hung around until it was ready at 2:00. The Lodge is my favorite resort and there were no problems. Club Level - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!! What a damn joke.

A.Our room wasn't cleaned until about 3:00PM every day. I had read Club Level was done first.
B.The food - HAHAHA!!! Soda, goldfish, gummy bears, cookies, and at night they had some cobbler. Not even appetizers or hot plates. It sucked!!! Breakfast were frozen hostess muffins or bagels. The rooms themself are the exact same as any other, except for the cheap bathrobes they give you and a DVD player. I can't fathom how anyone who has done this once would possibly pay for it again.

We get to the Magic Kingdom. My back is still killing me, so we go to Guest Services to try for the GAC. We had a copy of my step-son's prescription as well as a printout of what it's for. We got the biggest jerk at Guest Services. I explain it to him and he informs me "Normally, we don't give the card for people with anxiety disorders." I pointed out to him nicely as I could that I had read it in Passporter and his doctor recommended it. This guy had the audacity to say "Well, maybe I should give you a pass allowing you to skip the line at the doctor's office as well." Um, yeah, listen - If you don't want to give me the card, then don't give it to me. But don't take that tone of voice with me pal. Needless to say, my wife went ape at that comment and asked for a manager. When we told the manager what happened, he didn't believe us. Not in a rude way, but couldn't believe anyone would say something like that. He was very kind, got us a card and apologized. I hate to say it, but without that card, we couldn't have done this trip. My back started feeling better after about 7 days, but trying to pick my kids up and contain them was pretty much impossible.

The parks were fun as always. The Magic Kingdom needs some TLC BIG time. It looks like hell. I saw the same walls and fake facades up that I did back in January. The Buzz Lightyear ride interior looks like something you'd see at a travelling fair. Universal is doing a much better job at upkeep.

I'll never stay at a monorail resort. We were considering the Grand Floridian, but that's out. The GF shares buses with WL. WL gets picked up first. By the time we got to the GF, half the time, the guests from there had to stand. $400 a night for that??? One night, we were at the GF trying to catch a monorail. We had to wait for the 4th one before one came by with any room on it. The GF is the last stop, so by the time it gets there, it's packed. We got off at the Contemporary to take the boat back to WL, and the idiots have the elevators blocked off. We had to carry our boys and their strollers down on an escalator. I love Disney, but seriously, they have their heads up their rearends sometimes.

The parks were mobbed. No sign of recession in site in Disney.

Biggest pet peeves - Morons smoking whever they please and idiots taking flash photos in dark rides.

Great trip report (although sorry to hear about your back. I have lower back pain so I can relate).

You are right about the service at Universal's resorts compared to that at Disney. Universal definitely has that down. Also, the upkeep is much better on the attractions at Universal. All around, they do a much better job than Disney does these days of following the ingenious business philosophies of a guy named... Walt Disney!

One of my pet hates is dark ride photography too, and the trouble is, once one person takes a photo then loads of others follow !

I hate flashes in the dark rides to. I am sorry that you had some issues, but like a previous poster said, I hope you were able to enjoy yourselves anyway.

Unfortunately you're right.

Except for that Royal Pacific is a Loews Luxury hotel. Which means they staffed by REAL hospitality workers. A majority of Disney resort cast members or managers have never worked in a real luxury resort. It's simply just where casting told them to go. Then they rose up to management level from the "promote from within" concept.

You will get better service at ANY 4-5 star hotel around Orlando, than Disney. And that's a fact. And you'll pay 1/3 of the price. At Disney, they want you to pay for the convenience and the "theming". I don't care what they tell you...service is second.

------------------
Take the Hyatt Grand Cypress as an example. Beautiful resort. Just around the corner from WDW. Struggling bad right now...house numbers every night are wayyyy down. Just checked, a beautiful LAKE VIEW room at $169 a night for a lake view in a HOTEL (not a glorified Disney value/moderate outside-door motel). Free Disney transportation. A full service concierge for you to use whenever you want. And a luxury staff that serves you 24-hours-a-day. Check the google rating. 4.5 stars out of 776 Reviews.

Not sure about you, but right now in this economy, where bang for the buck meets reality...I just don't see it at Disney. It's really hit or miss on your experience these days. It should be a hit EVERY time. And it's far overpriced for the "experience"...yet people continue to pay it (then complain).
------------------

Should also note that, Universal is also going through an attendance crisis. They can't afford to not be on their A-game. Disney, on most days, still packs them in. So until that changes and guests complain about the state of the WDW Resort as a whole...nothing will change.

(And Disney quick service food is gross and SLOW as well. Unless it's the Flame Tree BBQ.)

...However, great post to the OP. Sorry your experience wasn't up to par. Here's hoping things get better in the land of the Mouse.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about your back and the poor level of quality/service in Disney. I can't say I'm surprised though. I've been going to Disney for the past 30 years and even though I have a great love for the parks I have noticed the steady decrease in service, park upkeep, cleanliness, etc. For the past 10 years or so we've also been splitting up out time between Universal and Disney with Universal coming out on top every single trip. We LOVED Royal Pacific (have stayed at Portafino Bay and Hard Rock as well and LOVED them too). The staff, the cleanliness, the parks, all superb above Disney especially these last two years. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney and it will always hold a special place in my heart and I will continue to visit but now instead of a whole vacation centered around Disney it's now being split at least 50/50 with Universal (maybe even more next year :lookaroun).

agree on the hotels... Loews/Hyatt/Marriott vs. Disney, etc.

That being said, Uni is fine, but my god, those sure are different "crowds" and a different vibe. The "slightly seedy" element is enough to give a hint of less-than-WDW to my time there.

Royal Pacific, though, is top notch.

Feeling much better, thanks.

Sorry if I was so negative in the report. Honestly, we had a fantastic time. Just seems kind of boring to post only the good stuff. Bad stuff is juicier.:fork:

Very good points! I used to always stay on Disney property whenever I would go to Florida, and I would always recommend it for people I knew who were going there. Now I never stay on property and I always discourage others from doing so. Just not worth it. I do, however, stay on property at Universal for at least a portion of every trip and I have never once been let down or disappointed by doing so. Worth every penny and then some!!
