What if you don't have enough points to borrow?

If you want to use 300 points, and you only have, say, 275 available, is there a way to pay cash for the extra use of the needed points for that particualr vacation? My question assumes that there are no points available to borrow for the next few use years. Can you just "rent" 25 points for a single vacation in order to get the room you want, etc? Or are you just stuck?

You can rent the points off of another DVC member looking to rent, at different websites than this one. OR you can pay cash for the room to make the vacation as long as you want. If it's a WDW vacation, and you're staying at a DVC resort, there will be a DVC discount.

Bear in mind, however, that if you opt to pay for the room, you can't mix points and cash for the same night. In other words, let's say that those 25 points you're looking to rent is for room that requires 35 points for the night you want. You have 10 of those points, but you need another 25. There's no way to break down the room so that you can use your 10 points and pay the balance of the room, for the night, in cash. You'd either have to rent points, or pay for the whole room and bank those leftover 10 points.

If you rent from another DVC owner, be aware that is a seperate reservation under their name.

If you do that, you may have to change rooms in the middle of the stay.

Edit: Now that I think about it, how can you split a night if you are renting points. You can't book 10 points worth of the room from your account, and the remaining 25 out of somone elses account - can you ?

I could be wrong, and if I am, I apologize. I thought that as long as points were being used, it didn't matter. The rentee assigns a temporary usage of points to the renter, so for the use year, those points are the renter. But I could totally be wrong, and I'm sure DVC Mike are someone else will corect me if I'm wrong.

I'm certainly not the expert - as I am new to all this too - but the way I understand it is that unless the person you're renting the points from actually transfers the points to your account, they will need to make the ressie for you and you cannot "combine" points to cover a specific night. I believe the transfer can only happen once per use year from the originator, so you're not guaranteed that someone will transfer their points to you. Your options will be:

1 - Use as many points as you can to cover each night in full. Then pay cash (DVC Discount) for the rest.

2 - Have someone transfer their points to you and use all your available points to make your ressie.

3 - Use as many points as you can to cover each night in full, then rent someone else's points and they will make the ressie for you for the remaining nights (in this case you may need to change rooms in the middle of your stay).

Please correct me if I'm wrong - because I'd like to know too! :o

That sounds about right to me.

I'll simply add that with #1, there is no guarantee of getting a cash discount thru DVC. The cash discount is normally only offered when the resort/room size is projected to be under 100% booked by members using points. Weekend nights tend to be easy along with weekdays during the typical slow periods.

If OP CAN get the cash discount for the same resort/room size/room class, the cash and points bookings can be "linked" together so that it's like one continuous stay. If the cash night is booked thru CRO under some other discount program, the guest will have to check in twice and it could cause problems with the Dining Plan (if used.)

The transfer is the most seamless way to go, but members can only make one transfer per year. Sometimes that makes it difficult to find someone to transfer a relatively small number of points.

Of course, option #4 would be buy more points! ;)

As a DVC Member, there would be little reason to choose #3 over #2, unless you had already used up your allowed transfer.

Since I'm new to this, I have to ask - you would need to get another member to use up their one time transfer to you, correct? Basically, I can transfer out of my account only once per UY, right? Seems to me that if that's the case, many members would use the transfer out option sparingly. What have you found with transfers? Do many members transfer out willingly?

I think most members don't have to transfer points, as they typically have only one UY and don't need to. I've never transferred points. I'd much prefer to transfer excess points to another member than rent them to a non-member, as it's much less work.

If I was a member looking to get more points one year, I would definitely go the transfer route, as the points would be in my membership to do with as I wish. If I rented, I would have no control over the points.

I have two accounts with DVC, one purchased on the resell market. They are both BWV and both in the month of August. I was able to transfer current year points, but if I understand the question right, so of the points where borrowed points. DVC would not allow me to combined borrowed points so I had to book part of my stay with one account and than the last days with the other account. They did combine them into one reservation so that I would not have to change rooms.

I have points purchased directly from Disney (4 seperate purchases) but at one time I also had some points purchased on the resale market and ended up selling them since two accounts were not worth the aggravation, they were different months. But Disney had said that if they had been the same month, they could have been combined under my original contracts, so why do you have a problem if both are August months?

I will call again, but the last time that I asked this question I was told that no points purchased on the resale market could be combined. I will call my sells rep and ask the questions again. Thanks and I will let you know what I am been told.

Thanks dizzney, I am working on the paperwork now. I have to change one of the deeds to match the other and there will be some cost to that, but it will be money well spent.
