Disney Hotels Sold Out...

My husband and I have been booking December trips to Disney World for the last 8 years. We usually book right about now and have never had a problem finding a moderate or value resort. We called Disney direct yesterday, looked on Expedia, Travelocity & AAA and were told by all that all resorts were booked! With the exception of the higher priced Swan & Dolphin, they had a few rooms left. Does anyone know why the high capacity of visitors this year? I expect the crowds to be huge from December 20th through New Years, but not December 7th through the 15th like we were planning to go. We did book the Plaza near Downtown Disney but it isn't the same as staying at a "Disney" property. Now I wonder how the ride lines will be... Any help as to why the early crowd this year will be greatly appreciated!

I've not checked dates or anything but if resorts re usually sold out at a 'quiet' time of year then it could be due to an event at the Wide World of Sports.

Sorry - would have edited but using the mobile interface so I cant....

Anyway, I've just checked the Pop Warner site and their Super Bowl and National Cheer & Dance Championships is taking place from the 7th - 13th December. This will fill up the value resorts pretty quickly.

I don't know how much this will affect crowds but I wouldn't expect it to be too busy as most kids will be competing. However, there are bound to be a few running around so things might not be as quiet as previous years. I dobt this will affect ADR's or anything though,

Like has already been said that is during the annual Pop Warner championship. If you can move your dates to late November or Early December you might have more luck finding a room at a value or moderate. Your next option would be to look off property.

Mousefest land events are December 11-15, 2008....

The taping of the Christmas parade can fill a lot of rooms too. That is usually the first weekend or so of December.

:xmas: Pop Warner is always there in Dec. as well as the taping of the Christmas parade but this year the rooms have been booked since the fourth of July. We booked 1 room at Pop in April as a bounceback offer and it took 4months to be able to get the second room. We have never had that problem even in peak season when we book for Easter usually two months prior. I wonder if they are blocking reservations for specials like Disney Visa holders. I mean why offer a special if there are no rooms available.

I really don't understand this either. I am traveling down Dec 6th-14th and have had the same room problem for about 8 weeks. I call and all rooms are supposedly booked. I've been in early, mid, and late December multiple times and it just doesn't make sense. I booked a room in May two weeks before my arrival!

I hope a disproportional amount of rooms have been set aside for the Pop Warner block and, once the deadline passes, they will be released to the general public.

I know there is no “slow” season anymore, but I cannot comprehend how the second week of December sold out of resort rooms in mid-July. From the responses I have seen, no one else can really explain it either.

edit: grammar

We booked CBR resort for Dec 7-12 back in May. Disney website listed this as a "great time" to go, their calender was highlighted in yellow for that week. Go there now and the week before and after are highlighted and 7-12 are not. Something is going there then. These dates we not included in any promos either. We tried to get reservations for Donald Breakfast at Tusker house and they are all full that week.

Regarding your worry about heavy crowds.....the resorts being booked up does not necessarily reflect how crowded the parks will be.

Touringplans.com is not predicting heavy crowds for that week, and they are are usually pretty accurate. The first two weeks of December is still a great time to go to WDW as far as crowds are concerened. Of course crowds have grown over the years, but it is still one of the best times of the year to go.

As others have pointed out, the only concern is if you do end up at a value resort with all of the cheerleaders/football players. They can get pretty rowdy and can drive you insane on the buses, but they really do not have a large impact on park crowds.

The free dining is a Disney Visa special.

We had it when we were there earlier this month and loved it.

This will be our 3rd trip this year!

Don't quite know why I'm showing up here as new - have posted for the last couple of years - but I don't really care :-)
