$4 a gallon... we aren't going...

This is not Disney's fault. But at $4 per gallon, the difference in going to Disney right now is unbelievable. The total gas cost difference for us is the price of our food for the week.

I would like to know if anyone else has decided that the price of Gas has put Disney out of the loop for this year.
I am just wondering if the people who may not go because of gas prices went on a disney trip when gas was $1.00 per gallon cheaper. And also wonder how many gallons of gas they are using that they will give up a Disney trip over the increase price of gas. If It cost $100.00 more for gas this trip, would someone really give up a fun trip to Disney?

Well, we are still going to WDW. But the costs of everything does impact our future plans. we will probably scale back on the frequent trips, length of stay, dining choices and gift purchases.

The hike in gasoline from $2 to over $4.00 does impact our disposable income. My husband drives about 80 miles a day for work. We live in Illinois, he works in Missouri. There is no public transportation from our home to his work. (nothing out near his work). We don't have the option of living closer to his work because we couldn't affoard a McMansion and all the costs associated with it. So we live in IL. near family, good schools, etc. and he makes the drive each day.

As others have said, everything is going up. I am spending more on groceries and getting less. All of these things together impact how much disposable income we have for a vacation. This year, we are good, we had planned ahead and paid in advance. If things stay the same or get worse, then I'd say we wont be back in Florida next year.

<<I paid $0.93 a gallon on6/20/98. That's right, I filled up our van for $22.00. THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!!>>
.93cents in 1998? I was paying .99 cents in calif. in 1980! It was about 1.99 in 1998 in CA.

I've got you beat...in Oct 2001 (yes, this century) regular gas was $.83/gallon (Sunoco) in Lansdale, PA (Philly suburb) - no one was driving anywhere after 9/11

what I really like is that I should buy another vehicle, when I own free and clear the one that I currently have. that's the advice that I really like. Spend $5000, $8000, $12,000, $18000 to save gas. How much gas do I need to save to justify spending this amount of money?

and that I should do so just because "some know it all on the internet said so".

some one who must know where I live, or my weather or what ever. Someone who must know my personal driveway, and what it is like in 6 or 8 or 14 inches of snow, or in glare ice.

wow, how did I ever live without this expert in my life?

the bottom line is that its too expensive to go to Florida.

and that $1.65 a gallon price, that was just over two years ago.

sad to say.

I understand...I also live under several feet of snow in the winter but I spoke with someone here that you would probably find as irritating (and amusing) as I do. He has one of those mini cars...brand new...and was bragging about how good it is on gas and how he's reducing emissions and saving the world by driving his itty bitty car.

I asked if he will be driving it in the winter (as you can imagine the winters here in Nova Scotia can be brutal) and he said, no he'll be storing it in the winter and driving his SUV instead!!! The winters here can last from October to April!!!!

I guess he's only into saving the world for 4 or 5 months a year

We drove down in May the prices were at that time 3.85 going down over 1000 miles coming back it was 3.95.

We spent $300 in gas driving over 2200 miles RT (Cleveland Ohio)

Gives you an idea how much it costs.

I guess the prices I'm pumping at are a lot better than what some of you all are saying you have to deal with. In the last two weeks I've pumped premium twice, the first time at $3.98/gal and the second at $4.04. I guess that's much better than $4.25 for regular, which I'm sure is in my near future.

like someone stated a while back..(regarding the price increase in the tickets)..

if you are reconsidering you disney vacations because of a 400-500 increase, you should reconsider you whole trip and not based on the gas prices.

i would believe that the average trip cost for a 4 people family would be around 5000-7000 (in our case it is)...so 10% should not be that much.

here in mexico, gas prices have always been high..not really noticing any difference when traveling within the US.

I communte 14 miles a day one way to work, not even a bus comes to where I live and goes to where I work. It is all interstate driving, with the exception of a few miles of city streets. When I was in Europe 3 years ago the transportation system was extensive and I had many options to travel within a city and to another city on the public system (Italy and France). So, while I am grateful we don't pay that much (compared to England, etc...) I am also aware that we (Indianapolis) don't have the public transportion system you have either. I couldn't even take the train to Orlando if I wanted to. I would have to go to Chicago (about 150 miles north of me) just to get a train to go 1150 miles south (past Indianapolis, but no train stops here going south) to Orlando. When I went from Florence Italy to Rome I had the choice of 16 different departure times in one 24 hour period in which I traveled. I would LOVE to have that option but Americans are in love with their cars and we drive big cars, the bigger the better or so it seems. We have abandoned our rail system and have yet to develop a decent public transportation alternative.

To the OP, I am sorry your trip is out of the question this year. I had to cancel a trip to WDW last year (for health reasons) and I know how you feel.

If you think the public transport system in the UK is like that of other European countries then you are extremely misguided. The only place where we have a truly extensive underground system (ie can get pretty much anywhere) is London. A handful of other cities have some sort of above ground tram system in place though they do not cover the whole city. A train ticket from Manchester to London can sometimes cost in excess of $200 unless you are willing to travel in the middle of the night. Our bus service is a joke. For me to get to work on the bus I would have to change 3 times! We are currently paying $9 a US gallon for unleaded, we would LOVE to be only paying $4. Hell, thats 55.6p a litre, I can't even remember the last time it was that low here.

I don't think I'll ever be able to take another one of your posts seriously since you just said, "the Arabs".

Understandably so...I used it as a generalization. I know it in no way accurately describes the middle eastern population, it actually pertains to only one country. I used it only as a commonly incorrectly used broad stereotype that a lot of people take as the entire middle east. I used it to get a point across because I couldn't think of the right word at the moment. I also am aware that we get <20% of our oil from over there, but the entire situation in the middle east has caused quite a problem with our oil prices.

gees, would you qualify that as a selfish post?

sounds like someone who doesn't pay the bills for the family. or is in an elite situation, where the price of gas doesn't affect them at all.

very short sighted. but not uncommon for those who "have money".

Irony sets in for FL. They do not want to drill off the coast for oil because the beleive it will affect tourism. Now not drilling off the coast for billions of barrels of oil will affect tourism.

Luckily for us we live in NC and the local fox station did a comparison on summer driving from last year to this year it looks like it will cost us 24 more dollars each way. We figured by packing a meal for our drive will cover the cost by not eating fast food for a family of four.
