Tipping and a party of 6

I just got off the phone wdw dining booking ADRs. They informed me that for a party of 6 the tip is added to the check. I dont have a problem with this if the server actually earned the 15% or 18%.

I do have a problem if the service is sub par and the server is making that 15% or 18%.

My question is are you allowed to adjust the amount of the tip?

Upward, yes. Downward, I doubt it.

Note that the reason the tip is added automatically is because serving 6 people is much harder than 2, or 4. Its harder on the server, and more likely that the server will make a mistake (getting you the wrong side, taking a while for 1 dish, etc), so if you do get a server that you think is subpar, try giving them the benefit of the doubt. I'm not saying you normally wouldn't, but its good to understand why restaurants do that.

For the group-of-6 auto gratuity, you *might* be able to talk to a manager if your meal was utterly horrible and get them to adjust it (and if you have a meal that's *that* bad, you should be talking to a manager anyway). But I have no evidence one way or the other that they can adjust the tip.

For people who get the auto-gratuity added when you use your DDE card or CM discount, I've heard that there is nothing that the manager can do to adjust those tips.

I highly doubt you'd receive horrible service. It IS Disney World after all. And I agree with another poster when they told you to give the server the benefit of the doubt. Just because they might make a mistake doesn't mean it's entirely their fault. It could be the kitchen, a busy night, or their other tables might be running them to death. IMO, one should always tip 20%. And 15% is only for the most god awful of service, not for the best. The 15% guideline is very outdated. With rising cost of living and everything else, 15% doesn't cut it as a suitable tip for good service. :)

I'm sure you'll have outstanding service. Hope you have a great trip

You have a very different view of tipping to me. I would never tip someone 15% if I receive terrible service. I'm interested to understand why you would pay an additional 15% ontop of your bill to reward terrible service? :)

To me, terrible service means that the server isn't friendly, doesn't ever refill beverages even if you have asked, doesn't attempt to fix the problem if there is one, and never checks back on you and/or only goes to the table to get your drinks and give you the check. Or something of the like. But what one has to understand is that there are many different reasons they might not be completely up to par. They might be extremely busy due to numerous reasons (the kitchen is slow with orders, other tables are running them to death, another server didn't show up for their shift so their section has doubled and it's a Saturday night, etc.) all of this happens on any given night in any restaurant. And yes, I am a server. I attempt to give the best service possible with a smile on my face and a friendly attitude. Also, depending on the state servers make anywhere from $2.13 to $3.50/hour. They rely on their tips for their money. I honestly don't think any server ever INTENDS to give someone bad service. Because if they did that then why would they even take the job in the first place? :-) lol

It truly defies explaination! :dazzle:
But you have been in the states enough to know that "that's just the way it is".....:brick:

What I hated about the old Dining plan was the gurantee of a 18% tip to the server.

Before I get alot of hate and grief, There were servers that deserve more than 18% and I would leave extra money when they did a good or great job.

It was the servers who would take the order and then disappear. I went through the entire meal at 50's Primetime last September with one glass of water. I would ask her each time she walked by the table for more water. She always said "sorry be right back with it" Never got it. She got 18% cause of the dining plan but it came out of Disney's pocket. This year due to us being a party of 6 its the same thing automatic 18% gurantee but out of my pocket.

I usually tip 20% for good service, so they are on the losing end of the deal here. Bad service should be reported to the management as soon as possible. However, you have to realize these people make less than minimum wage so they rely heavily on tips to make a living. Also, big problem has always been that in Europe tips are always automatically added to the bill. With such a large percentage of foreign visitors that don't know to tip, these kids lose a lot of money, which is why originally the tips were automatically put on the bill.
