How long will it be closed???

I don't think it is closed is it??? Just a little rerouting of the crowds. From what I hear it will definitely be worth it in any case. That whole area around the lake is evolving quite well! Can't wait for T-Rex to open this fall :D

If you click on the link to see the photos it says this...

9 April 2008: Ghirardelli refurbishment underway
The Ghirardelli location at Downtown Disney Marketplace is now closed for it's refurbishment.

I am glad that the area is getting attention, but I just wondered if it will be open for early August since I will be down there during that time.

Too bad they had to close it. From what I understand it is only some decorative work that is being done. So I would expect it to be closed weeks, not months. Anyone know more?

I believe its actually totally closed for 3 days (it was definately closed when that photo was taken). Once it reopens, I understand that the retail side will be in operation, but not the dessert side.

I don't eat a single thing that they serve there, but that place must be what Nirvana* smells like.

Mmmm, Hot Fudge Sundae.

What's the difference between the retail and dessert sides? Does retail mean no hot fudge sundaes?

closed for four days from monday tot hursday. MAY reopen Friday but it is pushed back to monday just in case it's taking longer. it's more than decorations. a lot of equipment is going in and being replaced.

The trip to disney is not the same without having one of there rootbeer floats. that would stink if it was closed when you visited.

retail open

The retail side opened up as we were walking by around 8pm tonight. The soda fountain is still covered up, and there is a construction wall behind the counter where you used to be able to see across between the stores.

Does the menu at the Chicago location differ at all from the DTD location? I work a block away from the Chicago location at Heron and Michigan. I'd love to try one of those root beer floats one day as a replacement for my lunch. Yummy yummy yum.

I know that you could get drinks from the retail side...Does that mean you can't get those either?? My parents are going in May and that's their favorite stop (they go at least once a day). Any more information about the refurb will be greatly appreciated (by everyone!)!:)

At least as of yesterday, it was just merchandise/pre-packed chocolate that was for sale...might have been bottles of water, but thats it. There is a wall now behind the counter blocking the cashiers from reaching the soda fountain.

That sundae, and all of their other San Francisco-themed sundaes, were removed from the menu a while ago when they switched to a new menu. It upset me greatly, as the Cable Car and Domingo sundaes were my absolute favorite.

Even though its not on the menu, if you order it they will still make it. My dad to this day gets a Cable Car every time he goes.
