What are the advantages to getting an Annual Pass?

We are DVC members so we get the $100 discount for being DVC, plus the DDE card which saves 20% on meals, plus all the other varied and asostred discounts.

We plan two trips within the 365 days, we were there in August 2007 for 9 days/8 nights and are going again this February (less than 3 weeks now) for 8 days/ 8 nights so its very cost effective.

We do NOT renew it as we prefer to purchase it at the beginning of one of our two trips,

It works well for us being a family of five

What do you mean the Annual Passes are paper? They are not in credit card form at all?
No they are printed on the same paper medium that MYW tickets are printed on and not the plastic medium that you get at your resort. The paper tickets have proven to be far more durable then the plastic tickets that will demagnetize very quickly.

So far it looks like all the AP perks have been mentioned with the exception of 2.
1. Exclusive AP only merchandise. This can include shirts, watches and more importantly for some...pins.
.

Good luck with that. My bf and I just got back 6 days ago (both of us are APers) and we searched high and low for that merch. We asked at pin locations, Mouse Gear (even a manager there didn't know what we were talking about), Exposition Hall, the Emporium and guest relations. Apparently, these things (besides the pins) do not exist anymore, because no one knew what we were talking about. We were dissapointed too, because we wanted a t-shirt. We each got a pin though.

Oh I have never seen the MYW tickets. I just get the tickets hooked up the the room key (thats what we did last time anyways). I dunno, it just sounds cheap that they are on paper and a credit card would just be so much easier to stick in your wallet and carry around.

Some of the advantages: Discounts on room rates, ability to attend infrequent passholder previews, not having to wait in ticket booth lines, Water park/Pleasure Island/DisneyQuest admission (If Premium Annual), the knowledge you can go whenever you want (within geographical reason), discounts off services, tours and in some shops and dining locales, and one of the most important perks: Free parking. If you go frequently enough, that alone is worth it. If you're an out of stater and you'll only be at the World for a week or so during the year, it's probably not worth it in my opinion.

My husband and I are DVC members and get the discount on buying AP. AP discounts include:
1. 10% off of spa treatments at GF and SS.
2. 50% off of miniature golf at Fantasia Gardens and Mickey's Winter
Summerland for AP and I think up to 3 guests.
3. Discount on admission to Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.
4. Discount on admission to MNSSHP, MVMCP, and the P&P on select nights.
5. The big one for fizzle and I is 10% off of merchandise at World of Disney.
6. 15% off of some backstage tours.
7. Select Dining Discounts.

There are many more but this should give you a good idea.

8. 50% off admisson to Pleasure Island.
9. Free valet parking at resorts.
10. Discounted admission to DisneyQuest.

The paper tickets are actually slightly smaller and considerably thinner then a credit card so they fit in your wallet a little easier. It might seem cheep on the surface but the magnetic strip on the paper ticket is much more durable then the one used on the room keys. I have keep 5 AP's in my wallet for about 5 or 6 years now, use them very frequently and have yet have one not work. On the other hand we seem to have to get at least 2 or 3 room keys replaced every year and we only have those for 3 or 4 days max.

Thanks for the info Yoda. My girlfriend and I have been sorta on the fence about getting an annual pass. The discounts seem to be worth it. Is the renewal of the annual pass cheaper than the initial purchase?

Slightly. I think to comes out to about a 10% discount for a renewal. Quite frequently we will not renew because when you renew your expiration date will not change and there have been times when we knew that we would not be in the parks for a period of time so getting the extra time was worth not getting the discount.

I'm not sure if it pertains to all AP renewals, but as a Florida resident:), the renewal saves us $35 each year, per pass. Another great thing is that park hopping is already included.

It depends. I'm an out-of-stater. In 2005 I had a 10-day package trip booked in a moderate. Then I investigated the AP. I found that I got a deep enough discount on the room, that I converted the package to room-only, bought MYW for DW, DD adolescent, and DD child, and got DDE. With what I saved on the room and my tickets along, the AP paid for itself. And I got a premium because we planned water parks and DQ, and I still came out ahead. Then with the other AP and DDE discounts we got during the trip, it was a few hundred $ more saved.

Heck, we saved about $70 at V&A's alone.

Of course, these discounts are not always available. If they are not, then I-4Warrior is right - it doesn't make sense for just one trip a year.

Then, since I already had the AP, we went back again on a last minute trip a few months later, also with a deep hotel discount, and saved even more.

But even without this second trip, as I have said, the AP paid for itself, and we saved $200-300 more on top of that.

Of course we wouldn't have taken that second trip if I didn't have the AP, and this is exactly why Disney offers such deals!

As a bonus, I went to Orlando on business later that year, and I spent most of my free time at the F&W festival!

you get a crappy paper ticket while all the other guest get durable credit cards.....
When we exchanged our AP voucher for the "paper" ticket, i asked why its paper, not more durable. The CM said hed give me $ if i could tear a ticket. Those thigs are way more durable than i though. Yhey are a high strenght TYVEK type material, not paper. I could barely get a dent in the edge. they take up a lot less room when theres 6 of them too, compared to the plastic counterparts.

Iwe gave up our annual passes, when we could no longer make more than one trip in a year. Staying ten days a year, we just coudnt justify the AP. Break even , when staying in a Value is a lot more visits than if you add up the savings from a Moderate stay. And we have 6 in the family noe, so the only affordable place for us on property is the All Star suite, which, i dont remeber ever teeing much, if any, of a AP discount.

As a Florida resident, we renewed our passes for the 5th year in a row and paid $335 for each adult pass. The kids' passes were about $295. For us, it pays for itself after about 4 or 5 days in the park, (if you look at the daily rate). We go up about once a month (it does wonders for our autistic son) and sometimes stay up to 10-14 days depending if it is a holiday break.

You can almost always find that merchandise at Island Mercantile in AK.
