might be a dumb question

ok, years ago I flew to Europe and remember one of my friends had packed a 12 pack of coke. Well it didn't go in her carry on and well when presurized cola becomes unpresurized, it wasn't a pretty picture for her luggage.

Fast forward to now, I know there are the strick laws about what you can carry on because of 9-11. But if I put my cologne and stuff like that in my suitcase, will it not break as well. Or was that because of the coke being carbonized??? I might have just answered my own question.

Did I just have a blonde moment???

The bottles shouldn't break because of the pressure, but put everything in a zip bag anyway...just in case. Also wrap that bag inside a pair of jeans or such for extra cushioning.

They have cans of soda on planes and they don't explode.

Your bottle of cologne will not explode because the bottle is not under pressure where as a can of coke is. The higher the plane goes the more the atmospheric pressure on the outside of a container drops. This drop in pressure provides less resistance on the outside of a pressurised container so it begins to expand and can potentially burst.

The bottle may not break, but the top may leak, and so I always put liquids and anything potentially gooey in a zip lock. It only takes one leaky shampoo bottle to make you spend valuable holiday time doing laundry.

One trip to Disney I decided to bring dry cereal with me for breakfast. Clever me measured out each day's portion in cheap plastic bowls with snap on lids, so that I would be ready to go every day. These lids weren't made to withstand the pressures of 35,000 feet above sea level and one of the lids let go in the suitcase. I spent the first few days at WDW shaking cereal bits out of my clothes. Lesson learned!

Actually, it was me, I left my seat, went into the luggage area and found the suit case with the coke and opened all of them.

I would as for a little common sense but...

I second Tinkershelly - utilize zip lock bags. Unfrotunately, I forgot about this little trick last year (I hadn't flown in nine years) and when we opened our suitcases we had a nasty surprise. At least I was intelligent enough to have all the tolietries by themselves, in one bag, without any clothes or anything else. Needless to say, my body wash leaked, my shampoo and conditioner were everywhere, and something else leaked. In addition, the bag had been checked by the TSA. So, lesson learned, pack each bathroom item in a zip lock bag (they are your friend).
