Piracy of Pirates theme?

I'm watching the White Sox - Yankees game on Superstation WGN. At the opening of the game, while they're showing clips of the Sox from previous games, they were playing the theme song Pirates!!!! Was that song written expressly for the Pirates movie? Wouldn't it be protected by copywrite laws??

Yes, but because of agreements between networks, such as providing game highlights to ESPN, the fees are minimized or non-existant. By the way, GO Yankees!!!

Actually alot of movie themes are used in commercials. A couple popular ones that were used alot are the themes to Willow and Hook.

Its not piracy, most times the company that runs the commercial pays a hefty fee for use of the song, and in many cases they have to pay royalties fees for each time the commercial airs with the song. Same thing goes for music when they sample portions of classic songs in the track.

They also used the song last year for the opening montage sequence at Comiskey Park. When I called it to ask questions about my season tickets, I talked to our ticket rep about the music, and he said they pay some royality fees. I had a debate with my husband about weather or not it was in fact the pirates music, but of course, I won the arguement. I know my disney!

It really is a cool montage too, it is a nice pick me up as the game starts.

Another thing that I thought weird- and here the tables are turned- was a recent Walt Disney World commercial that was using James Newton Howard's music from the 2003 Peter Pan movie, which I'm pretty sure is owned by Fox. Odd, I thought, that a company with as much archived and property music as Disney would be paying to use someone else's music, but there you go.

Anyone ever watch the show Top Gear on BBC? Since it's technically a British Government production they don't have to pay any music royalties to anyone, so if they want to showcase a car by playing 3 minutes of the Batman theme and then follow it up with some U2, no one can stop them!

Not true, copyrights are internationally recognized. Just because you reside in another country doesn't mean you don't have to pay royalties to an artist for the use of their copyrighted material. Alot of times the older and less popular a song is, the less an artist will demand for the use of it. So if you want a song from a recent blockbuster (PoTC) its gonna cost a whole lot more than a song from an old old movie (Batman).

Interesting. I would have thought the White Sox would have spent money on better players instead of Pirates theme songs!! :ROFLOL:

By the way, the Yankees kicked their butts and took the last 3 games of the four game series. Go Yankees!!! (until their playing the Mets - then I yell GO METS!!!!)

Actually large groups (such as baseball teams, companies like disney, ect) have a blanket payment made to the RIAA that allows them to use most any song. It's not cheap though, and some groups will opt to pay for the rights to just the tune they need. But if your company uses a LOT of music, they can pay for everything at once.

For last year's all star game, they played "He's a Pirate" when the National League players came on the field ( they played the star wars theme for the American League ).

There is nothing like being at the game in person and hearing the POTC theme music. Talk about hair standing up on the back of your neck as they roll the White Sox history of highlights. The fact that the White Sox won the World Series in 2005 and for a true White Sox fan, that will last a life time. When was the last time the Yankees won the series? Ummm... I know it's been longer than 2 seasons!

Watch out for the White Sox... starting tonight.. they are gonna roll.. Baseball fans.. save this post!

They still do...was just there last night :D

THe theme music to Disney Parks Year of a Million Dreams, is the soundtrack to the live action version of Peter Pan. and all the music in "The Land" pavillion at epcot seems to be movie soundtracks from various companies that r not disney. THe all seem to revolve around flight, like the soundtrack flying theme to Hook, or Peter Pan, and ET. lol

Our school district wanted to use the music from PotC for their orchestra. You have to buy the sheet music for every student who will use it, you cannot buy one and copy it. The same goes for the Disney medley used for the chorus, multiple copies had to be bought and not copied.
Everything has its price, the secret is to find the people willing to pay it.

By the way, the concert was great! Both the orchestra and the chorus outdid themselves. :king:
