And no need to worry about PIN numbers at Disney - debit cards are treated as credit cards.

Maybe we just have a different banking system here in Canada but I can't imagine how this is possible. A debit card immediately takes money out of your bank account and that's why you need to enter a PIN. A credit card, however, is not immediate. You get billed for it later.

Disney (or any merchant) loses $ on card transactions...

They do not lose money but there are charges assigned by the CC to each transaction. I would bet that a company as large as disney is either free or pennies per transaction though.

However in reality it would cost them more money to use cash, they have to count, sort, package, store, and deposit it. That takes more time in terms of labor than a mostly computerized CC transaction. I bet they wish all transactions were CC, less cost and less risk of error/theft.

With the dining plan, lines are longer with those transactions because people order to the full extent of their benefits. Thus, you have people hemming and hawing over wether to get the brownie (which sucks) or the fruit for dessert for their entire 27 person party.

Wonder how many people will stand in the cash only line for 10 minutes, get to the front, and pull out a piece of plastic. Then when they're told it's cash only, A.) Complain that they never bring cash on vacation, B.) Insist that the cashier accept their card, and/or C.) Whine that Disney refuses to accept credit cards. :lookaroun

Well...if you can't read the sign than you pay the price of getting in a regular line. Of course there are plenty of people that can't read signs....just ask all those smokers that can't seem to manage to find the "smoking areas".

That is my husband's biggest nightmare for our upcoming trip. We are going with a group of nearly 40...I am having a meeting to go over some of the procedures for the newbies....how to use FP, how to order your CS food on the dining plan (i.e. Know what the heck you want BEFORE you get to the cashier).

They will definitely pay at least 1% per transaction (and almost certainly a little more). While I'm sure they pay less than a local mom and pop store (except on Amex who I believe doesn't negotiate and I think discover also) they don't pay that little.

There is a little "volume discount" because disney can negotiate with many Visa/MC processing companies but those companies have to pay a minum % to the issuing bank (and the bank doesn't care if the charge was at disney or the gas station) plus they have to get some revenue for themselves.

It's not like a coke deal where they are using it for marketing purposes. Nobody knows who disney's cc processor is and even if they did it wouldn't matter.

It's the same at Wal-mart. The credit card processors can't give them free processing and the issuing banks have a minimum they must charge. Just look at the rewards programs. The best non-travel redemptions usually run at a value of 1% of what you spend. Therefore, the issuing bank has to charge 1% to break even.

Many UK companys now charge a fee if you use a credit card, usually a couple of%, no fees for debit cards.

It's the opposite here in Canada. Many banks limit the number of free debit transaction a customer has. Some stores use systems that charge a set fee regardless of the customer's bank, as well. Credit cards though are free to use. They get you with the interest.

I too saw people stop at the first register. I also saw people stand in line for up to ten minutes, get to the cashier and then decide what they want! augh.

You have no idea how much that irks me. They are waiting in line and instead of looking at the menu board they are yapping their traps and then they get up there and they are like ugghhhhhhhhh, what comes with that and all kinds of stupid questions. It is sooooooooooooooo annoying.

I'm no expert but doesn't CASH ruin the whole express thing??? It should be the Limited meal and room key. No counting change and could probably even be done using a self service computer.
