Email service

Some advice please - I need to subscribe to an email (hosting -?) service so that I can keep receiving all my Disney-related stuff (other stuff, too) in the event of a job change without having to update all those profiles. I don't want to use a "free" web-based service, mainly because I may have to use it for business and I don't want it to be *.hotmail or *.gmail, etc. Also, I want to be able to retrieve my email using Outlook. Any suggestions?

Is Bellsouth available where you are? That's what I use (DSL version), and use Outlook Express with it. It's pretty good. They are in the process of merging with AT&T

I use yahoo mail and pay $20 something a year for the POP forwarding and I love it because it filters all the spam out before it gets to me.

Some of the free services actually offer premium versions of their services as well which will allow you to customize your e-mail so that it doesn't end in @hotmail.com or whatever the service happens to be. Don't dismiss those ones outright without checking into if that is possible with them.

There's honestly nothing wrong with Gmail. It doesn't have the negative connotations that Hotmail and Yahoo addresses have and it's also way better in terms of just about everything. I'm also pretty sure that you can use Outlook to access it as I access my Gmail account in Apple's Mail app.

Also, sometimes a domain owner will let people have email addresses from that domain. For instance, I own webcookie.net, and I let several of my friends have an @webcookie.net email address.

I wasn't aware of this. I'll look into it. Thank you for the tip.
As far as using BellSouth (or other), I'm only interested in being sure that my email gets to me. I'm not looking for another ISP. Thanks anyway.

Another question: I've thought about setting up a personal web page that would serve the same purpose (i.e. getting my personal email), but also to post my resume. Or would I need to get my own domain (if that's the correct term)?

I also ran into a problem once when I tried to sign up for something online and they wouldn't accept something with the @____.com that I have. I don't know how prevalent this is, but I want to avoid this occurence in the future.

I agree with the gmail suggestion. It is wonderful and I've seen plenty of professional people using it on business cards and such. You can most definitely use it with Outlook.

Gmail is so young that you can probably still get your own name as your email address. That's what mine is. With other services like Yahoo and Hotmail, you always have to add a bunch of numbers to the end of your name and that looks so unprofessional.

If you are looking to get your own domain (whatever.com/.net/.org), you will need to purchase a domain name (cheap) and hosting (can be cheap). Two companies that I have had good luck with are Netrillium and Dreamhost (current host of webcookie.net). My domain name is registered with Netrillium for $8/year and I used to have my hosting with them. I now use Dreamhost as my host and I pay $9.95/month for a ridiculously high amount of space and bandwidth; Dreamhost gives you great deals. You can also pay yearly and get a bit of a discount. You can set up pretty much a gazillion email addresses and forwarding addresses. If you decide to go with Dreamhost, please let me know. As a current client, I can write up a special discount code just for you, which will give you a discount on your hosting, and give me a bonus for referring you; we both win.

I've been using gmail for almost a year now and I love it. If anybody wants an invite just ask.
