iPod - to engrave or not? Advice please!

I know it's rather silly to be having a hard time with this, but I can't decide whether to get the iPod I'm giving DH engraved (this is a free service offered when you purchase from Apple). I've heard advice against it, as the unit is not returnable once engraved (though they will service a defective unit). And if I do have it engraved, what do I put? I'm not the sentimental type, and we don't have cute pet names for each other - I though maybe just "Merry Christmas 2006", or is that lame?

Come on y'all, please make up my mind for me!!!!:D

If there's no particular sentiment you want to put and you're struggling this much with the idea of doing it, I'd say skip it.

You can always write him a nice note to go along with it should the Muse inspire you.

My mum got both me and my brother a NANO for xmas last year....she ordered his through the website and got his name and his favourite football team engraved on it....mine i didnt decide to ask for until it was too late so she bought it in a regular shop..i would have loved for it too have been engraved it does look really cool....so even if you just get his name and maybe your anniversary date on it or somehting (so he can never forget!) it would be nice!

iPods are expensive, small items and as such attractive to thieves. Engraving makes them less so. I'd get it engraved with his name.

Returns other than for warranty repairs are only an issue if he's not going to want it. Hopefully before spending that much on a gift, you'd know he'll want one?

To keep in mind: these things have a very short shelf-life...if he wants to upgrade to the next coolest model to come out a year from now, he will have a tougher time selling an engraved iPod on eBay or elsewhere.

I wouldn't do it.

I wouldn't engrave it because eventually you'll want to sell it on Ebay and who wants someone else's name or sentiments engraved on their new (to them) iPod. Plus, you can't even figure out what you'd put on it, so I think that's a sign. I think the engraving looks cool in the coloured Nanos and Minis though.

Engraving can make certain items more desireable....

Try leaving an engraved Zippo lighter (with your initials) on a bar unattended for 5 minutes.

It just makes it that much more desireable to the thieves.:veryconfu :hammer:

As always, excellent advice from the board. Thank you!

I'm going with no engraving.

I really appreciate all the replys - thanks for helping silly old me!

I had mine engraved with my nickname and phone number (..just in case I would lose it, which there is no chance in 'H E double hockey sticks' I would ever do that.
