News Disney Unveils Advanced Self-Walking Olaf Built with AI and Reinforcement Learning

Disney put out this surprisingly detailed image of the inner workings of Olaf. I am part of group that builds Star Wars droids and someone commented that this isn't exactly an instruction manual, but it's pretty close. Wouldn't be surprised to see someone in the group try to build one.

This is cool publicity. I will probably never see Olaf “in person” and if for some reason I do, it will be from a safe distance, so it’s great to see this publicly stuff and I am sure it’s good for the stock price.

When the singularity comes, it will be millions of home-crafted Olafs marching through the streets ""hugging"" people to death.

It seems like lots of wdi budget goes to photo op / press releases like these that end up getting cut after a short season.

Lucky the Dino, muppet mobile lab, Remy the rat, talking Mickey at MK - these were all popular with guests weren’t they?

I know the only reason I paid to eat at chefs was to “meet the new chef” - and it was worth it!
And yet the Stuntronic Spider-Man at Avengers Campus in DCA has been running daily for 4.5 years.

So really your examples seems to be more a TDO issue than a WDI issue.

Just making sure its clarified since WDI is not doing these just for the giggles of a photo op/press release, but rather its operations that says no to the continued expense after its released.
Absolutely!
Now on a higher level - id say it’s a waste of company money to develop this if operations doesn’t want it.

I’m not sure why operations doesn’t want something that guests like?

That I can't answer, could be operations likes things in concept when presented but when put into practice in the real world its not enough ROI for them, dunno. What is interesting is how it seems to be TDO all the time rather than the other Parks, other Parks seem to take on these things and keep them going, especially the overseas Parks.

Anaheim didn’t keep the talking heads either. I’ve lost all faith in Anaheim with letting Hyperion sit empty and no entertainment in the horseshoe for the 70th - that should be a crime.
And yet I am the only one in Disney fandom who seems to keep saying why this is the case... Entertainment is not a revenue source, LLs and F&B are. It used to be one, but not for the past 25 years.

Sure no Park is completely without cutting things, but TDO takes the cake.

Entertainment is more expensive in Anaheim, so they are selective about where they utilize it. Not saying I agree with it, but do understand why a full broadway style show in a theme park might not be the best expense when other entertainment offerings are cheaper and just as impactful for a majority of guests.

All this advanced tech... is it overkill? It's impressive don't get me wrong but is it so advanced that Disney is afraid to share it with the parkgoing public in any extended capacity? Seems like all these amazing things have limited run time. Maybe Disney should work on making dumb versions of this stuff. Instead of something elaborate with servos, AI learning tech and motors and wires, could it be possible for Disney to bring back Talking Mickey in more streamlined manual rig where the performer is the puppeteer and the rig isn't some heavy technologically advanced system?

Seems a waste to see Talking Mickey (and other technologies) fall at the wayside because they're either too afraid to keep it in rotation to "protect it" or it's just too cumbersome to pull off on a daily basis.

Yes
So what you’re saying is… book trips to non-US Disney theme parks instead of booking trips to Orlando? 🤔 I mean, I’m sold. 😎

If you look at the normal costs of travel, hotel, and admission (thats no AP, no DVC, no meal plan, no extended stay) A trip to Tokyo Disney Sea/ Disneyland comes out as being less expansive.
