News New Changes Coming to the Disney Look 2021

I can see a change coming for the WDW Dress Code for TMs. Universal has revised as of yesterday their dress policy to allow for a septum ring. They are also allowing "One unnatural hair color".
I will go a bit further as I have seen the policy guidelines for the changes:

Nose Jewelry:
They now allow for one standard nose piercing or septum piercing. They are permitted if the jewelry meets the approved nose piercing jewelry size.

Tattoos:
TMs that are guest facing can not have tattoos on the back of the neck or on the hand,. They must also cover the tattoo if its larger than their hand or gives an appearance of a tattoo sleeve. The only exception to this policy is one visible finger tattoo per hand in place of a ring. Back of House and those with limited guest contact are an exception to these policy. They can be asked to cover a tattoo if it violates a part of the guidelines based on subject matter.

Hair and hair color:
No more than one color considered unnatural to human hair is allowed at one time. It can be done in alongside hair colors considered natural to human hair. They will also allow for shaving part of the head or eyebrows, cutting or dying designs into the hair, as long as it's well-maintained and does not impede safety or job performance.

Due note, at the end of the day it will be entirely up to management to enforce this as they deem fit.

Some of our family hardware store’s smartest, most capable staff are tattooed, pierced, dyed-hair former food and bev veterans.

I respect wanting the best workers, and not discriminating based on appearance.

You can’t say “Disney is creating rides for younger generations, so stop complaining!” and then complain that body mods that younger peeps don’t have an issue with are game-changers 🤷

Especially as competition for the most competent workers ramps up.

That’s not discrimination. In a country that always had serious issues with actual discrimination you really don’t want to use that word for someone who wants to have bright pink hair or a nose piercing.
You don’t know why a person chose those mods. It may be a self-reclaiming act after a traumatic event.

Also, personally, a well-groomed person rocking an awesome hot pink hairdo is far more appealing to me than gelled hair 🤷🏼‍♀️

But that’s the thing. It’s subjective. I’d hire the most competent person, whether they have gelled hair or not.

I’m glad I can do that, and my employer doesn’t bar me from hiring the pink-haired person, forcing me to hire someone less competent or have an awkward conversation about changing their hair color, which may be a personal choice of expression after abuse, etc.

That has nothing to do with the point that I made regarding the word discrimination. But I’m hoping you didn’t mean it as the actual definition of discrimination.

In general, appearance does matter, it’s just where you choose to draw the line. That’s a decision that can be very tricky to make.

Please see the part about why people sometimes choose mods.

It’s not unlawful discrimination based on a protected class but discrimination can also mean treating similarly situated people unfairly without a legitimate reason.

Disney has a legitimate reason to require its employees to conform to uniform standards of dress and appearance. It also has a business reason to attract competent, qualified cast members.

The changes seem to reflect the reality of changing standards of appearance as well as a realization that appearance is not necessarily an indicator of job performance. I think you pointed that out very well.

We’ve been told that CM comfort and ability to express themself is the new priority.
Call me old-fashioned, but shouldn't good service be the priority?

I understand times have changed, I also get 'comfort and some level of self expression'. Besides, from what I've seen, it must be somewhat difficult to find employees with a 'clean-cut look' these days.
