Visions Fantastic: An Imagineering Competition (Game Thread)

My pitch...

Yea, this is a real Sophie's Choice that PerGron has found himself in. Everyone in the final eight has played a fantastic game, but alas four need to be cut. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, I haven't had a perfect game. I was particularly messy during the speed rounds where I had several very public crash outs due to mental health issues.

That being said, I feel like even during my crash out rounds I managed to crack out some strong stuff, and have made a bit of a comeback in the third act of the game.

The first couple rounds I was mostly dipping my toes in the water, taking on the Snoopy strategy of making small but meaningful contributions to the projects. That all changed at the roller coaster round. I don't want to blow too much smoke right away, but I truly think my work on Pinball Blizzard was a masterclass in team leadership and the finished product serves as one of my absolute all time proudest achievements.

In spite of my crash outs and legitimately wanting to quit a couple times, I preserved through the speed round and managed to come out stronger on the other side. The speed rounds had the lowest lows of the game but also some big highs. First off, I can proudly say that I was the guy who pitched what would ultimately turn out to be the WORST project I ever completed in the form of Scary Restaurant, which is an achievement in its own right. 🤣🤣

The two big highlights of the speed rounds for me were the Wings of Wonder exhibit and the Link Hogthrob meet n' greet. For Wings of Wonder I'd like to throw that out as a singular achievement on my end, and I really think I went out of my way to respect PerGron's love of animals and the authenticity of what a zoo experience should be and went literally inch by inch improving a park I know like my own backyard. We didn't win because of the lack of participation from the rest of the team, but I'm still super proud of my solo effort.

With Link Hogthrob, I loved turning an obscure podcast meme into a legitimately effective meet n greet. I think the character fits the over the top method role the encounter calls for and I really like the different Muppet cameos I threw in. I'm also super proud of the meta Peacemaker and Vigilante meet n' greet at Magic Mountain's abandoned fortress of solitude from the same round.

Finally getting into the third act, I really went full stop trying to do some of the biggest highlights in each of the rounds. While the James Bond land and Hollywood Hotel were tremendous group efforts, I really think I went all out with the Austin Powers ride and Great Movie Mini Golf. Going back to my early strategy, these weren't the main components of the projects, but I went out of my way to make them major highlights that the projects would feel incomplete without even though both of them I approached as Vanity passion projects. I also went out of my way with the presentation here, doing voice clips for Austin Powers and layout sketches of all 36 holes across my mini golf project.

I'm THE original Tiki. I'm the Godfather of these games. I might not always be the most active and I'm certainly a tech boomer when it comes to website design and other presentation elements, but I always, from day one of my Armchair Imagineering career, have strived to think outside of the box and come up with ideas that you can tell right away are MY concepts.

I feel like I've contributed some of the most memorable stand alone elements of the season, had a personal growth arc coming out stronger on the other side of wanting to quit, and have the legacy behind my name to earn my spot in the finals. I'm not going to lie, this is the first time all season I've felt legitimately NERVOUS about getting eliminated, but my god the field of competition is insane and if it is my time to go I'll happily take the free time I've been desperately craving and cheer on the final four from the sidelines.

Let's give it up to PerGron once again for a truly spectacular hosting effort! It amazes me time and time again that this community still finds the time to come together for these things, and I'm going to savor that for as long as it lasts.

Well, where do I start? I suppose I should start from the beginning. I started in Manor of Mysteries as a newbie that made several odd decisions (we don't talk about Fly Inside!), wasn't much of a team player, and made quite frankly... horrible maps. Look at me now, creating paragraphs upon paragraphs of descriptions, constantly improving my map making skills, and truly becoming an integral part of the team. I always gave my thoughts on projects and while I made some questionable decisions this round, they have always been leading to a greater goal. To be better. That's what we all want to do at the end of the day, plus winning.

I led my team on reviving the Mickey Mouse Review at Hollywood Studios, dipped my toes in the field of character design (I will always be proud of No Face Fred), I created a jazz bar with such an elaborate menu and band list that I shocked myself, and made the Atomium, which of course was horrible but we all have those moments. The crowning moment of my career in this game will always be... Branmere. That land has to be the crowning achievement of this entire game. It truly shows that if given enough time, I can create experiences that rival the greats despite my young age. I'll tell ya, keeping up with ya old geezers has been a lot harder than it looks (all jokes my friends) but I surprised myself with keeping up with some of the biggest behemoths on this forum.

What am I trying to say here? Honestly, once I start writing I can't seem to stop which is both a superpower and a curse. I have always been passionate about the projects that I lead, constantly second guessing myself to see if it's up to par with the other people on my team. I'm great at making maps despite the fact that I haven't really made any throughout this game. I have created great attraction, dining, and shopping descriptions for several locations around the world. While I admit, I sometimes don't make the best thematic decisions, the pros vastly outweigh the cons when it comes to my contributions to the several rounds that this game has had. I hate coming off this prideful, it really isn't a good look for me but I think it is rather necessary in this context. I have to thank Pergon for hosting such a delightful game that gave me something to do during the summer and subsequently took up more and more of my free time before I could only think about this game (slightly overexaggerated). My eyes are currently burning alive since my brightness is all the way up and it's dark as h*ll in my room as I struggle to fall asleep. What was I saying again? Oh yeah

I THINK I SHOULD BE IN THE GAME PERGON, PLEASE!!!

Entering this competition, I had two goals - to a). encourage and promote bold, new ideas, and b). uplift and support my team, so everyone can work together towards a).

On new ideas, I’m especially proud of Crossroads City, as well as more recently in Industryland with Lumière!, taking an animatronic show on the Industrial Revolution and running in the opposite direction of expected with mimes and classical music. I think there's a real benefit for out-of-the-box design, as it lets us discover so many possibilities for yourself as you experiment.

But, honestly most of my game was played with my second goal in mind - team building. Supporting opportunities for teammates to take a defining role for projects, lead the brainstorms, or encouraging them to tackle new roles and learning new skills. Team-wide enthusiasm in a pitch plays a major role on the finished project, and it’s the times where the entire time is inspired - firing on all cylinders - where the best and most creatively-inspired projects emerge.

It was never a super-planned-out “strategy” or anything, just a general attitude which I could apply round to round. For example, one of my teammates was very fond of transit, so they took charge on the transportation speed round, another a talented artist and took lead on concept art for an animal animatronic show. By intentionally taking a step back on brainstorming and allowing everyone to have a clear voice in the season, I think our teamwork greatly benefitted in both enthusiasm and diversity of creative work produced.

But no plan is perfect - sometimes things fall through the cracks - so I’d also play a pretty active role through the season as “backup” - keeping track of the deadline, slotting in as PM, making way too many Google sites and compiling to post.

This brings me to the semifinals, where eight people are all working on one resort… it’s a lot of amazing individual passion projects, and in a season where I was playing support for most of it, I figured why not go for broke with a very outside the box contribution. Not sure if it even qualifies as imagineering anymore lol, but I would always rather try something new, risky, and fail than not. If I am selected for the finals, I would carry that attitude into the round, and try something I haven’t before.

However, if I’m not selected I completely understand. This is a stacked final eight, and as others have already mentioned lol… I also genuinely could see any combination of us as the finalists. @PerGron best luck lol and thank you and all the rest of the cast for a great season this year!

I am sitting down to read the project now (I cannot access the google doc but I'll read through the pdf). Since it's a big boy, this may take a bit and then having to decide on the final four is truly impossible. I will be back with my review in a bit but please keep me in your thoughts as I try to figure out who moves on
Link on docs is working! Feel free to use either.

Here is the fixed version, it was such a massive file that it didn’t fully render on the website 😂
Fozz, this is genuinely amazing! It's already close in quality to the upper echelons of Parklore and IdealBuildout. I'm so happy to have seen your style in mapmaking evolve over the years :)

Speaking of maps, I have a secret project that I've been working on for quite some time that won't be in the public eye for a considerable amount of time ;)

Why do you think that I barely did any maps this game ;). This map took several months of my life but I'm thankful for every single second I put in it. The thing is, there is some parts of the map that I am unsatisfied with that will be updated in the future but overall, this map is done and I am very proud of it. My map making skill has definitely improved a lot to the point where I can't even tell that my earliest maps are mine.

PerGron's Review

It's been an honor watching these teams since the beginning, but as we've narrowed it down and gotten to the semi-finals and the final eight, this has been one of the most amazing groups of players I've seen in a while. You guys have all worked so hard and come up with some of the best projects not just of the year but I’d argue since I’ve been here at least.

Disney’s Hollywood Resort may be the pinnacle of this game with all eight of you fighting for your place in this semi-final. Everyone was firing on all cylinders and it’s just going to make my decision going forward all the more difficult. There’s a case for all eight of you to advance forward and while I would have loved to do another round of semi-finals to really chip away, that’s just not feasible. Thus, let’s get into the project as I make my decision.

Disney’s Hollywood Resort

First off, you guys picked a theme I was a little nervous about. Of course we already have Hollywood Studios as a park, the Tower of Terror within it, and we've done things like this before (The Grand American in 1986 was similar) so I can't lie, I was wondering how you guys would do this...

I should not have doubted this group.

You guys absolutely knocked this hotel out of the park. I would love to sit here and go in on absolutely every tiny minute detail, but I must restrain myself in some capacity because I'm busy and also I want to get our final four ready to go. For this reason, broad strokes because otherwise it'd just be straight up gushing about literally every element of this project. The lobby, the elevator, and the preamble are all phenomenal, I especially like the way you've taken the elevator from just transportation up the floors into an experience of its own. I also love the way each section is themed to the different eras of Hollywood films, it's a good way to take what otherwise feels like a new version of All Star Movies and make it have that deluxe resort feeling that it was supposed to have.

The rooms are all incredibly well done and the eras you guys selected are super interesting. I do wonder if the monochrome black-and-white room and floor colorations wouldn't be kind of annoying after a while, I'm not sure if that's just a me thing or not but not having any pops of color in the floor just feels like it would drive me crazy, though I absolutely understand what you were going for. The rest of the rooms though work really well and I'm a big fan. The most interesting are the Twilight Zone rooms which I know you guys were going for Starcruiser Lite and I think you achieved that super well. As a huge Twilight Zone and horror fan, this sounds like my dream come true, but also as someone whose girlfriend is terrified of anything scarier than Hocus Pocus, a rocking chair moving by itself or a child's giggle in the room is an absolute no go so I doubt I'd be allowed to stay here haha. Still, this is a really interesting and small enough addition that I can imagine it being insanely popular.

I will say, this is super super super minor and nitpicky, but that's how I have to be as I choose who advances because there's no other way to eliminate someone. I do think that you make it seem like it's obligatory and not particularly interesting to design the rooms in your intro for it. I know the rooms are certainly the most mundane bit of the project to do, but saying so in your project just didn't sit right with me when I was deeply analyzing everything. It's not something that would've mattered in round one, but here in the semi-finals, it stood out enough to be mentioned.

Getting into dining, I absolutely adored ALL of it and it makes it really hard to critique. Armstrong's feels straight off a Disney Cruise ship in the best possible way and is immaculately detailed and designed. The selection of musical artists is brilliant and gives a great variety to the club, and as a fan of jazz I loved them all. I also love the way you detailed the lights and colors for each band, it just gave a great personality. The menu is also fantastic and you have me genuinely trying to choose what I'd order as a sucker for a good po'boy, pulled pork, sliders, calamari, etc. This is something I think I'd absolutely spend a lot of my evenings in if I were staying here. You also killed it with drinks and as a minor who can't drink, I think it's both crazy and a bit alarming how well you did on this part lol. Giulia's is a lot simpler but still a great addition. I think a sushi bar makes a ton of sense and your selection of options is equally great. Starlet's Haunt sounds like a fantastic way to bring back a bit of a Citizens of Hollywood deal and I love the small Twilight Zone influences without going whole hog on it. That said, I think I could've had more from this one as the menu was pretty small, the nighttime experience I also could've had a bit more of. That's not to say it's bad but again, small things add up here and I did find myself wanting more. Alternatively, the Marquee Cafe I think is perfectly done, especially with the amazing menu that Ace designed. Honestly I think all four of these dining spots are perfect and picking one is hard, so I won't, but damn did you guys kill it here. Shopping is also excellently done, though I admittedly don't have a ton to say, just great stuff.

The entertainment offerings are also absolutely amazing. The Cinema makes a ton of sense and I love that it's free for guests as well. I do wish there was a bit more about what movies are being shown, but that's another nitpick as it was pretty solid as is. The pools also seem great, especially the Stunt Pool which I think would give Stormalong Bay at Yacht and Beach a run for its money for best pool. However, there's no denying the highlight here is Great Movie Minigolf. This is clearly a passion project from @TheOriginalTiki and that absolutely shows in how intricately detailed this thing is. I LOVE the inclusion of Scott "Movie" Mantz as the host here too, he was always my second favorite player on Movie Fights (behind Mike Carlson) and is someone I still watch. Making this two 18-hole courses is an insane task and the fact you did all of the holes is just freaking incredible. This is brilliantly done and an absolute success. Finally, y'all KNOW I love lore and spooky stuff and so the extra lore and "old hotel" stuff by @Outbound is genuinely some of my favorite stuff of the season.

Ultimately, this is a tour de force of a project and no matter how this goes, you should all be incredibly proud of yourselves. Until I get out results in a few hours, revel in your successes, you all deserve it!

I will not be doing hidden reveals for this one, instead as we eliminate the four, I will be doing small retrospectives for each eliminated player, one at a time.

EIGHTH PLACE
@Lizzy May Bee

Lizzy, it's been an absolute delight to have you in this game as it always is. Your personality shines as a teammate, always being present and engaged with your fellow teammates. Your work is also consistently fantastic, there's a reason you're in the top eight. However, I will say that in the semi-finals, while your stuff is always great, you had fewer "wow" moments than the rest of the team and thus you will be the first elimination. Thank you for playing as always, and AMAZING work this game!

SEVENTH PLACE
@Pi on my Cake

Pi, you're always one of my favorite players to watch and keep an eye out for. Like Lizzy, you have one of the most amazing and infectious personalities in the community and I know from experience that playing on a team with you can bring about some of the best memories in these games. Your contributions this game have been fantastic, as always, but what did you in was just the fact I wanted more for the Starlet restaurant. It was fantastic still, but it is small nitpicks that are taking people out here and unfortunately that was just enough to edge you out. Thank you for playing and AMAZING work!

SIXTH PLACE
@Architectural Guinea Pig

AGP, you have grown so much as a player since you've started and it's truly truly impressive. Your artwork is phenomenal and it's amazing to see an artist to the caliber of a @D Hulk or a @MonorailRed in the up and coming class of Armchair Imagineering. Your contributions to this game have been consistently amazing, especially the hotel design itself, just freaking amazing. Unfortunately, I have to cut someone and it was your contributions (outside the art) to this project that I felt was slightly lacking. The comments about the hotel rooms being necessary but not all that exciting was super super minor but it did sit with me where I think as a hotel it should've been a priority. It's something so tiny and little but that's really what it came down to. Thank you for playing and AMAZING work!

And finally, we come to the present... This is easily one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make. Not that the other three weren't hard, but this is truly the one that killed me. However, it had to be done and so...

FIFTH PLACE
@AceAstro

Ace, you have had some of the absolute highlights of this project and I think you should be more than proud of your work here. You honestly shouldn't be eliminated, it's not fair to you, or Pi or Lizzy or AGP, but it really came down to two things. One, your contributions to this last project were slightly smaller than the other four, and your plea was just slightly below the others up for elimination. In a just world, you'd be advancing in a final five, but I've broken my rule once already making a final eight instead of final six so I cannot break it again. Thank you so much for playing and AMAZING work as always!

Challenge Fourteen: Show Your Strength

Folks, we have entered the finals with the final four made up of @Lord Fozzinator, @Outbound, @Tegan pilots a chicken, and @TheOriginalTiki. All four of you are incredibly strong players who I truly believe can do anything. This final will be challenging that, because it's one of the most interesting and hard challenges I've offered. I believe in all of you...

Prompt: Design a Dream Park inspired by the things you love.

This will be a boutique park with four distinct lands, one for each of you. You will chose your topic, your attractions, whatever you include, but the four of you will be challenged to make it all flow together into one boutique park that makes sense. If Tegan wants to do Metroid, Outbound historical Baghdad, Tiki a Great Movie Ride, and Fozz a map land, that's up to you, but together you will have to make a park that makes sense with all of your loves.

If this is confusing, I am happy to communicate what I mean but I believe you can do it!

Project is due Sunday, November 2nd at 11:59 PST (2:59 AM EST)
