@TP2000 - I expect a report on your Viking Cruise.

I’m presuming that is where he is?

Oh that’s right you weren’t invited to the dinner party. He’s doing fine and says hello to everyone. I even met the nice neighbor lady who was visiting from Villa Park and gave me some juicy tidbits on DL Forward that unfortunately I cannot share with you all. But I can tell you the artichokes, ribeyes and scotch was all fantastic.

The salted pork was particularly good.

In other news, I hope everyone is enjoying the challenge to parking structure perceptions on display off the 57...

Usually MOST counter style eateries have been a lackluster for me. So far the Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup from Jolly Holiday lived up to its reputation. My only con is there should be TWO sandwiches to complement the soup.

Back to back ones at that! And are my arms tired of rowing! 🥴 The ocean cruise through Scandinavia and the northern British Isles (where I learned I'm allergic to Shetland Ponies), and then a few days in London to get my sea legs sorted before doing a river cruise through the Rhone Valley. Both itineraries were stunning!

I'm partial to the ocean cruises though now, because of the size of the ship. The river cruise was wonderful, but I enjoy seeing and chatting with the larger group of people on the ocean ships. And if you run into someone distasteful or rude, it's easier to escape and avoid them on the larger ships.

Do we have a cruise sub-forum here? I'm typing my thoughts out loud and never thought of that. I may need to join that if it exists, as I have thoughts on that topic now. Viking has absolutely nailed their brand and their style and their very high level of professionalism!

Much of it reminds me of classic Disneyland, as the Viking teams are so good at weaving stories and real history and fables and folklore into the days strung together on their itineraries. Port talks and night-before lectures and concerts and cooking classes onboard all play to what you have just experienced in port, or will experience with the culture in the next port. It's not just the style and clean aesthetics of the ship and their very sharp crew, it's how it all comes together to tell a story and teach you something! Viking is really an impressive organization, and dare I say a leader in the modern hospitality/tourism sphere.

Nice you had a good time!

The cruise forum is sub par here, but cruise critic is the forum that was most populous on the internet. Now Facebook groups seem to be the thing du jour, but your typical Viking age demographic is likely more forum based.

I inversely have not done a river cruise, could definitely see that anonymity issue.

Celebrity is my new favourite line, but Viking is a step above that. I’m not old enough and wealthy enough for Viking yet, maybe in a decade!

Just cancelled a reservation for 11/3 when I by chance happened to see that it’s a $104 day. Be vigilant folks. Keep an eye out for that day ticket calendar.

Interestingly, the river cruise skewed notably older, which I found interesting because it was from Lyon to Provence with post-cruise itineraries in the South of France and it focused on food and wine. I would have thought that would have had the younger crowd. The ocean cruise though had plenty of folks skirting age 40. I'm thrilled that Viking has an age limit of 18 for any of their cruises, and thus they have no children's or teen amenities onboard at all. That's why I won't do a Disney cruise, as I dabble more into this cruise culture. Only Viking could have gotten me to try this (after raves from friends), and now only Viking will get my business.

I'm not anti-child, mind you. But I try to avoid them on vacation. I think children are like cows; they're fun to wave at and say "Moooo!" out the window as you zip by them on a road trip, but you don't really want them travelling in the car with you.

Viking cruises are not showy or glitzy though, no tuxedo required, and you might be surprised if you price out a Viking cruise and realize your beer and wine at meals are included, most Port excursions are included, there's no casino, no upcharge dining options, no art auctions or pushy photographers or upselling or sales pressure of ANY kind. Their App that handles you from weeks before the cruise until you get home is pure perfection, and Disney would do well to study it and try to copy it. The Viking Cruise Line culture is all very stylish and elegant and all-inclusive. I did splurge in the spa on the Viking ocean cruise. It was the Viking Saturn specifically, and the staff and services were impeccable, but all the spas are the same on all their ships.

Except Viking is very unfriendly towards single cruisers and charges them double the rate as a couple (I understand an upcharge but I don’t think it should be 100%, I’m not consuming double the food, drink, or doing double the excursions) and it’s not like they are alone in that. Yet another reason I’m not rushing to do a cruise (and only Alaska will get me on one.)
