Methinks someone at Disney got cold feet……and cut a small announcement.

This has happened before, but it is a bit disappointing when your audience is assuming at least another piece of concept art might be shown.

Clearly this project is in the very early development stages and they have nothing else they feel comfortable in showing at this point.
But we did get a couple of lil’ bits of insight…..so…..

They obviously aren’t that far into designing the land if they’re only just now completing field research for architectural inspiration. Galaxy’s edge was at this stage before they announced it, more like 2013.

By 2015 when they announced it they had figured out the lands design, story, etc. with real concept art not just blue sky. So they announced it about 2 years ahead of where Villains is now.

So if GE opened in 2019, that’ll probably mean Villains is 2030 or even 2031.

This is going to be a painfully long wait but I hope the end result is more impressive than GE. I love GE, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations as a land.

Yeah, I wasn’t expecting huge details but given there was a whole panel there it seemed like would get some new concept art or maybe a bit of a description of one of the major attractions. Or even some name dropping of which villains would be significantly featured in the land.

I imagine they're aiming for a 2030 opening to have 1 big project a year, but obv it could get delayed

2027: Tropical Americas
2028: Monstropolis
2029: Piston Peak
2030: Villains Land

What I do think is interesting with Villains Land is that this is the first project since Haunted Mansion (It was announced in 1961 and the final design hadn't been settled until much later)? where all the stages of the design process has been publically talked about. It's rare to hear the blue sky suggestion (2022), then the green-light stage and research phases (where we are now). Similarly, Tropical Americas has had a similar public design phase, it's just been much quicker (Blue Sky in 2022 & 2023, research by 2024 and construction by 2025) We normally don't begin to hear anything about a new Disney project until it's a lot further along in the process.

I know a lot of people don't like this because it can lead to some overpromising and some sadly cancelled projects but I like to hear about this stuff as it would essentially be giant lost media if not more wildly shared. When possible, I'd love to hear any and all weird ideas that the Imagineers had even if they work out or not, especially since a lot of these ideas don't end with the first rejection. (Zootopia mini land became Zootopia Show, Coco Miniland became the Coco attraction at DCA, Moana AK land's attraction people expect to be partially reused in the AL plot)

Anyone wanna guess what the rides will be like?

Obviously one is a coaster, curious if it’ll be one with loops or more of a family thriller ride like Guardians or Hagrids Motorbike coaster where thrilling but also something the entire family can do.

Guessing 2nd one will be an indoor dark ride featuring many of disneys villains

The Disney coasters with inversions all opened around 1995-2005

They have since moved away from inversions, so it's safe to assume the potential Villains coaster won't have any either

Your memory is slightly failing you. I don’t know what informed the final decision, but perhaps it wasn’t to release more concepts that do not represent the final product entirely. We received Villains concept last year and SW:GE concepts in 2015.

Disney normally announces projects after the Concept Design phase is complete, which is early in the process.
