Scott Mallwitz: As we look forward for the next 10 years of EPCOT, we started to try to understand what the DNA of EPCOT architecture was all about.

Guest: What about The plaza in the center? Surely no one could screw that over right?

At this point I don't know if I should be cautiously optimistic or more afraid than ever knowing that there are actual plans in development for this park again
Like major design changes to the park or more attraction “upgrades”?

That entire video upset me. Because they basically admit they don’t teach the philosophy of the original imagineers anymore. And god bless the archives for existing so they can go back and see how amazing that philosophy and mentality was so they can do the exact opposite. LOL

Too late for that. They destroyed the Innoventions building and we all know what happened to the Fountain of Nations.
I don’t think the old Innoventions building or Fountain of Nations are necessary for Epcot to be Epcot. They just built an unacceptable replacement for the Fountain. They certainly could have built something new and impressive.

It doesn’t help that it’s an enormous area and the only “attraction” is Journey of Water. If that were the queue to a fleshed out weather pavilion, I’d be happier.

The tall rust structures don't help, neither does the stroller-unfriendly metal grating on the ground

That's the thing...the Old Guard of Imagineering would have had Journey Of Water actually attached to the Seas Pavilion as a queue...or a Weather Pavilion...not just a random thing disconnected from anything else... in a featureless corporate office park... With the removal of the Communicore and it's attractions, the central core is just a place to pass through...I realize we have not had any engaging attractions in the communicore buildings in decades...but that should have been the focus as opposed to tearing everything down and building an inferior building that literally adds nothing and does not have the capacity to even host any sort of attraction... THe whole thing is now the ruins of a value-engineered bad idea... At this point it just makes sense to re-think at least that central planter area, Add a new Show fountain and at least make that area feel engaging and meaningful... No one cares about another blah planter... but a fountain would be appreciated.

My guess is a lot of imagineers have the same opinions about EPCOT that people on here do. I assume most of the bad decisions comes from the buisness side of things and the imagineers are forced to comply.
You'd be surprised just how much EPCOT's management dictates some of the terrible decisions being made. WDI, as others have wisely put it, is essentially a contractor. Management at varying levels of the organization tell them what to design, and they do it. They don't come to management and say 'I have a great idea for a new Figment ride', management comes to them and says 'how about an Encanto show in that new plaza you're making?'
