EPCOT Test Track to be reimagined

I hate that interactivity is getting sucked out of Epcot overall. One thing I always loved about the previous version of Epcot was just the number of interactive games and whatnot you could get lost in. From what I understand 80's Epcot triple that lol
Annoyingly they took the whole "screens age attractions quickly" thing too far at Epcot and just decided to make it all bland and ignore the bit where its possible to replace software on the fly to update things.

Has it ever been confirmed if the sign on the speed loop does indeed measure the actual car speed or whether it's just there for effect? It now registers 65.1, just wondering if that's an in-joke because the previous one famously only went to 64.9.

there's at least one video showing just 65.0

This city sure has changed allot since the last time we’ve been there, and much more built up. I got the test track song stuck in my head the other day and realized that the music is actually very similar to the music from Horizons that is played on this part of the ride and they do throw in block from horizons to if you listen carefully.

The challenge with interactive stuff is always capacity.. it's hard to make stuff engaging that is durable and also short timed enough to not cause horrible throughput issues.

Communicore had some really cool stuff when it first opened. Innovations had some highlights, but was overrun with more junk than good. Of course the Interactive elements in the attraction queues has gotten mixed results.

It's certainly one of the more individualized elements of the experience that can give good lasting memories. It's just really difficult to do well in a high volume theme park like Disney. I think the most modern incarnation of this really is things like the lightsaber workshop.. by making them paid retail experiences they can throttle it and justify it.

Per Doctor Disney
"
The “speed at the door and it opens at the last second” effect at Test Track is currently not operating due to an incident where a vehicle struck the wall
👀

During last night’s Cast Member previews, the ride vehicle struck the wall as it didn’t open as it should have…today, the door is just fixed open.
The third image shows how it normally is upon approach.
According to people spoken to at EPCOT, the four CMs in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries on the scene and not taken elsewhere for treatment
🤕

As of this time, it is not known when the effect will be fixed. Previews (CM, AP, DVC, etc…) continue for the next couple of weeks before the grand reopening of Test Track 3.0 on July 23"

Well that doesn't bode well for it's return :(

I wonder if they changed how the mechanism works as I never heard of this happening before (unless the incident from prior to 1.0 opening was related to that)

I wonder what is changed that made this happen. Did they do significant updates to the ride system in a way that would enable this to happen? I can’t remember this ever being an issue before.

but yeah, in till they get it figured out what they’re doing. Here is the best option. Safety absolutely needs to be first before show.

4 people treated for injuries....still a safety issue
Probably just bumps and bruises kind of stuff. No one was actually transported.

I dunno what kind of breakaway system is in play here for the doors, if they break apart, or just expected to break free, etc.

Does make you wonder what kind of sensors are in play for triggering the estop for collisions tho. Maybe sudden speed changes or irregularities in each of the buggies themselves.

But I agree about concern about return... Disney is so hyper sensitive about the 'potential'.. that once something does happen, that's a high standard to cross back again.

If people read the story, these are not metal doors but foam. They're designed to break apart if hit. It doesn't mean that people won't get hurt. They were. But not as bad if there were metal doors. The doors worked as designed. It's very probable that imagineering rode it over and over and over again and nothing happened. It finally occurred with CM previews. I'm sorry they got hurt but this will enable Disney to hopefully tweak the doors so this doesn't happen again.

It won't happen again because they will be open from now on, just like they were most of the time before the reskin.

We'll see. With annual passholder previews about to start, probably. But hopefully it's resolved before regular opening to all guests.
