Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

I just the saw Elio yesterday. It’s really good film and it’s like a classic Pixar movie. It’s too bad it flopped, but I know it’s not the end of Pixar. Some people say the reason why Elio flopped, because everybody is sick and tired of the same old CGI animation, which I can’t argue with that. Lucky for Pixar, they’re ahead of the game by doing hybrid style animated film called Gatto coming in two years. Pixar is going to make CGI more hand painterly style, and it’s about time. I hope WDAS is doing the same even though they tried it for Wish. In the meantime, I’m hoping for the best of Elio becoming a sleeper hit.

Well Pixar has one more movie with that ugly cost-cutting style with Hoppers.
Elio added an additional $10.7million but still is 0.4x it's production budget. However M3GAN 2.0 is at $10.2million and 0.7x it's production budget. Everything should move down a peg next weekend for Jurassic World followed by Superman the weekend after. Maybe it would have been better if Elio was abducted directly to Disney+.

Well, look at that.

Elio stayed #3 in its second weekend.

Just as I predicted it would.

This is all superficial anyways, other than the movie of the week it doesn't really matter where the rest sit on the list.

why are they doing the social media equivalent of shaking the tip jar then?
I wouldn't call it that. What I'd call it is a rally call to support original stories. People complain about the glut of sequels, prequels, reboots, and the like coming out of Hollywood, and claim they want original stories but then don't show up for them when released. Well its just a reminder that "hey we still release original movies too, so you say you want a movie with an original story well here you go, go out and see it".

I mean, you never know. I think it's time WDAS and Pixar give up the same old CGI animation and either make a 2D/3D Hybrid style animation or bring back hand drawn animation.

Apparently not.
Except it is, based on audience scores.

The question isn't of quality, but rather why aren't people showing up. And that is a larger question that has been discussed in the main box office thread a bunch. The TLDR, its much easier to wait for these original movies to be available at home rather than to spend a small fortune for a family to take a trip to the theater.

Posted this take in another thread

I had a long drive the other day from a job site. In the podcast playlist, somewhere between Fresno and Merced, there was a guy talking about how Elio is horrible from a cinematography point of view and from a technical point of view is made by amatuers who do not know basic aspects of film making. They were saying that while the story is fine and it may be liked by people, the film at its core is flawed and has nothing to draw people in. They went into how this appears to be the results of the studio 'purging' the older storytellers in preference of young bucks who are still green in their career. I'll try to find in the list who was blabbing about it.
