Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

Lol. That sounds like something my wife would say.

I need to give Up another watch. Love the first half but the movie kind of starts losing me with the talking dogs and kind of goes downhill from there. Up always felt like something that was born as a short and then got worked into a movie. Which is maybe why the concept and first 1/3 of the movie or so is really strong for me and then it goes south. Anyway, I've only seen it in its entirety once or twice and it's been a while. Curious to see if my opinion will change.

Why would Disney care so much about HTTYD's gross that they would sacrifice one of their own movies to try and make it gross a little less? That film doing well doesn't really affect Disney's business in any meaningful way in and of itself.

That sounds more like a fan conspiracy than how business works in the real world.

Very cool. If I were into legos that would be my first purchase.

Dug in up is relatable on so many levels, he steals the show. His essence captures perfectly what a dog is, or at least the stereotype of one. I used to remark that Pixar owed me money as my first golden retriever was Dug to a T. After his passing I still had a hard time watching it fully. Still do.

Friendly business rivalry? I think the idea is that as Uni has started to take pages out of Disney's playbook in both the theme park and now movie space, that since Uni decided to get into the live-action remake arena too with Dragon use Elio to peel off some audience. Why else release Elio so quick after Stitch, and at the same time as Dragon, everyone questioned it. And so its make a bit of business sense.

Oh and I can tell you that businesses do actually do that, plenty of examples over the decades of business rivals taking shots at each other.

This is how I feel about the movie too. I thought I was the only one 😂

Finally saw Elio tonight and really enjoyed it. It does feel like one of the 'smaller' Pixar films in that it moved along at a brisk pace and with drama that seemed to unfold more on a personal level rather than through dramatic set pieces, which may seem a little unusual considering the backdrop of conflict between alien civilisations. Honestly, though, I appreciated the scale and tone of the film.

Still find it such a shame it has performed the way it has considering it's a very original film with a lot of genuine heart and will get clobbered by remakes and sequels that exist purely to generate revenue.

Either my kids are spoiled or it’s a bad sign they don’t even care to open the Elio toys from McDonalds. To be fair, they haven’t seen the movie yet and the toys kind of suck.

Took my kids to it based on the good word-of-mouth for the movie. We all liked it. Nothing too spoilery, but I'll put the tag on it just in case

It felt a little underdeveloped overall. I think it could've used more of his time on Earth beyond just trying to get abducted and a slower progression from learning about the Voyager to trying to get abducted. I think his behaviors and the animation style made him seem younger than he was. I thought he was like 8, but then they showed him running away from middle school (apparently he's 11). I thought the friendship between Elio and Glordon was well done.

But overall it was a sweet story and aside from blobby animation style for Elio, I thought the visuals were really good. Some of it reminded me of AI (the movie), which was cool. I also liked that I didn't know where it was going. Even though you can see some influences from other movies it didn't feel derivative to me. I feel like that hasn't been the case with a lot of recent movies. I don't think it ranks with the best Pixar movies, but do think it is one of the better non-sequel movies of late.

I can’t believe Elio flopped! I blame the YouTube Grifters for this! I hope Hoppers or Gatto (Most likely) will be box office successes. And I know, I know, it’s not the end of Pixar.

Even with the grifters, which every movie has, Elio had a terrible spot to release. Like I said, this should've been an August/September release when it would've had room to breathe

For being a film Disney had no faith in, it was sure to survive thanks to strong world of mouth.

I hope you’re right. And I’m sorry I didn’t believe you for $300 million rumor. It’s $150 million!

Megan 2 kind of sucked. Why can robots just hack each other like in Ghost in the Shell? Why physically fight. Not a good movie
